I was trying to recall some of the odd Nice Cream flavors that I'd enjoyed, whereupon I did a Google search and discovered a) that Nice Cream is run by mumblecore actress Kris Swanberg and b) that the state of Illinois had recently put a halt to their wholesale business. Booooo.

Chocolate chip seems completely uncontroversial.

Tiger Tail and Bubblegum are two raves, but I imagine them being divisive.

I Fucked Up (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

that's some brand i've never heard of up above. i was searching for shur-fine ice cream. i think shur-fine actually makes those too. they churn out tons of ice cream for chains all over the country.

really wanna know how the whole "moose tracks" phenomena got started. and turtles too.

scott seward, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

fudge IS freedom, so kinda redundant to call something "freedom fudge". but i do like the philly angle.

Bubblegum is totally fucked up. Don't understand how you're supposed to chew gum AND eat ice cream at the same time.

mint chip, but I'm flexible and will throw my support behind peppermint or pistachio. Or coffee. Oh oh oh or red bean or ginger or green tea.

I would like some ice cream, please.

Now, now, there will be no busting on flan. A well-made flan is to die for.

butvi wouls (Phil D.), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

Laurel I am concerned for your palate. You're just wrong about dulce de leche, and flan for that matter.

for all your flan-griping needs, laurel:

rice pudding -vs- bread pudding - vs- tapioca pudding -vs- chocolate pudding -vs- flan

I love dulce de leche. In my old neighborhood you could just get it in little pots. SO GOOD! The HD DDL is great, it's true.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

Dulce de leche tastes more than just "sweet"! It's caramel!

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

You know what sucks? Foamy ice cream. I learned on the Food Network that manufacturers of cheap ice cream whip it so that it feels creamier. Disgusting.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

For a sec I was like "high definition dulce de leche?"

butvi wouls (Phil D.), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:04 (thirteen years ago)

I don't like caramel on its own, especially as an icecream flavor. I don't mind it swirled with something else like chocolate or w/e, but I'm kinda with Laurel on the the whole DDL thing. It's just not my bag at all.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

I rarely eat ice cream but there are very few flavors I wouldn't like, though really sweet ones aren't to my taste.

I used to love it

I can eat mint chip again but I ate so much of it as a child that for several years I couldn't even look at the stuff w/o feeling queasy.

Nah I'm just being enthusiastically hyperbolic (on the internet, I know! who knew?!), but really I think it's cos I don't have that sweet tooth. I can crave sweet stuff if it tastes LIKE something else but caramel is not flavorful enough apart from just being more sugar.

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

You people who like DDL can come to my nabe and buy out the ice cream options. Please? Because they'll never order anything I like until the stuff in those coolers is gone, and it's all DDL and pineapple-mango.

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)

Dulce de leche isn't exactly caramel, by the way. It's caramelized sweetened milk. I prefer it to basic sugar caramels most of the time.

cauliflower isn't broccoli but they look similar enough to me that I hate them both equally.

same thing with DDL/Caramel, only slightly less vehement hatred :)

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

Btw, all you vanilla ice cream lovers should try

http://threetwinsicecream.com/sites/default/files/flavors/3twinsDadsCardamom.jpg

I love caulifower and broccoli differently.

VG, I totally get the caramel hatred. Upthread someone spoke of caramelized onions. Do you hate them, too? Even in a savory context? What about sauteed apples?

I like caramelized apples, onions whatever...but to me that's not the same thing as making caramel with butter sugar cream etc.

And I will clarify that caramel from scratch, put on something/in something delicious is really damn good. But caramel in icecreams, and caramel flavor is just uuuuuggggh sickly.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

but to me that's not the same thing as making caramel with butter sugar cream etc.

Well caramelization is the browning of sugars in all its forms, it's just the dairy that seems to irk you.

I can kind of see that since to me one of the definitions of revolting food is someone spooning sugared butter into their mouth out of a bowl.

But I guess if you fried the sugared butter, I'd be okay w/it, which kind of troubles me.

For me it's like: You have this sweetened dairy product called ice cream, to which you add...another sweetened dairy product. That's like putting rice on pizza imo.

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

Clearly subtlety is not my strong suit. Who knew?

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

caramel tastes cloying to me in icecream. I don't have a problem with the dairy in caramel I don't think. I like the THING that is caramel, I don't like the representation of it in icecream.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I get that w ddl, 'cept plain caramel is just burned sugar.

This leads me to my own weird prejudice about ice cream; w/the exception of strawberries and peaches, I don't usually like fruit flavored ice creams, or rather, I'd prefer a sorbet.

i like cherries in ice cream.

scott seward, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

i just really like cherries.

scott seward, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)

Scott, Hudsonville makes a chocolate and cherry flavor!! It's called "Chocolate N Cherry."

http://hudsonvilleicecream.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/scoop-chocolatencherry.png

drawn to them like a moth toward a spanakopita (Laurel), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:44 (thirteen years ago)

It's a seasonal "limited edition," too, so you can only get it in the spring. In Michigan.

i'm pretty sure someone made a trout ice cream on iron chef america.

the kids of boris midney high (get bent), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

The first Battle of the Masters involved Sakai and Flay, with the theme of trout. There, Sakai had made two dishes of note: one was gift-wrapped to commemorate the opening of Kitchen Stadium America, while the other was trout ice cream, a dish that would be repeatedly recalled and referred to later on when anyone used the ice cream maker.
