my childhood fave was rocky road. and/or heavenly hash. at least i think heavenly hash is comparable to rocky road. there may be suble differences. would always make mom buy me a too-cold brick of shur fine heavenly hash.

that's some brand i've never heard of up above. i was searching for shur-fine ice cream. i think shur-fine actually makes those too. they churn out tons of ice cream for chains all over the country.

fudge IS freedom, so kinda redundant to call something "freedom fudge". but i do like the philly angle.

there's an ice cream store in the east village that has red bean and ginger ice cream flavors. they're ok alone but AMAZING together

I love dulce de leche. In my old neighborhood you could just get it in little pots. SO GOOD! The HD DDL is great, it's true.

You know what sucks? Foamy ice cream. I learned on the Food Network that manufacturers of cheap ice cream whip it so that it feels creamier. Disgusting.

For a sec I was like "high definition dulce de leche?"

I don't like caramel on its own, especially as an icecream flavor. I don't mind it swirled with something else like chocolate or w/e, but I'm kinda with Laurel on the the whole DDL thing. It's just not my bag at all.

I rarely eat ice cream but there are very few flavors I wouldn't like, though really sweet ones aren't to my taste.

I can eat mint chip again but I ate so much of it as a child that for several years I couldn't even look at the stuff w/o feeling queasy.

Nah I'm just being enthusiastically hyperbolic (on the internet, I know! who knew?!), but really I think it's cos I don't have that sweet tooth. I can crave sweet stuff if it tastes LIKE something else but caramel is not flavorful enough apart from just being more sugar.

You people who like DDL can come to my nabe and buy out the ice cream options. Please? Because they'll never order anything I like until the stuff in those coolers is gone, and it's all DDL and pineapple-mango.

Dulce de leche isn't exactly caramel, by the way. It's caramelized sweetened milk. I prefer it to basic sugar caramels most of the time.

cauliflower isn't broccoli but they look similar enough to me that I hate them both equally.

same thing with DDL/Caramel, only slightly less vehement hatred :)

VG, I totally get the caramel hatred. Upthread someone spoke of caramelized onions. Do you hate them, too? Even in a savory context? What about sauteed apples?

I like caramelized apples, onions whatever...but to me that's not the same thing as making caramel with butter sugar cream etc.

And I will clarify that caramel from scratch, put on something/in something delicious is really damn good. But caramel in icecreams, and caramel flavor is just uuuuuggggh sickly.

Well caramelization is the browning of sugars in all its forms, it's just the dairy that seems to irk you.

I can kind of see that since to me one of the definitions of revolting food is someone spooning sugared butter into their mouth out of a bowl.

But I guess if you fried the sugared butter, I'd be okay w/it, which kind of troubles me.

For me it's like: You have this sweetened dairy product called ice cream, to which you add...another sweetened dairy product. That's like putting rice on pizza imo.

caramel tastes cloying to me in icecream. I don't have a problem with the dairy in caramel I don't think. I like the THING that is caramel, I don't like the representation of it in icecream.

This leads me to my own weird prejudice about ice cream; w/the exception of strawberries and peaches, I don't usually like fruit flavored ice creams, or rather, I'd prefer a sorbet.

BTW have you guys ever tried clotted cream ice cream? It's a specialty of south-west england. Clotted cream/ Devonshire cream is what you have on scones as a cream tea and in ice cream it's the creamiest thing imaginable.

i'm pretty sure someone made a trout ice cream on iron chef america.
