Ok. Because of a series of whacky allergies, I've now been a vegan for about one year. It had to happen, of course, but I had hoped that it would take longer than one year to get sick of nuts, pulses and legumes. So...

What's your favourite vegan friendly base ingredient?

Chickpeas are versatile, nutritious, and cheap as all get out.

haha exactly what i put on the food pyramid thread: chick peas, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, tea and vanilla soya milk. if you need any help/recipes/resources please feel free to email me (but i won't be able to get back to you for another few hours as i'm at work). it isn't all nuts, pulses and legumes you know (although, um, it is quite a lot!)

there is also vegan erotica, but katie is shy to admit that. and she will. she was v. v. v. good to my room mate who was crazy, but katie is not crazy she is lovely. she also has good to grate hair.

i could talk more about your hair katie or how kind you were to me in london or your bosom which reminds me of sparrows.

Thanks Katie / Laura for your thoughts/offers.

Ah yes chick peas! They are a pulse (right?), and I've loved them to death.

Vegan erotica !!! I've discovered that veganism often comes close to a zealotry-based religion (especially vis-a-vis soy milk varieties, none of which I'll consume), but...

Grated Katie hair = not vegan, surely?

There are some really good vegan recipe archives on the net. There's a good yahoo group as well.

My favourite is pea & lettuce curry:

Bag of frozen peas (preferably thawed)
Lettuce (shredded)
Spring onions (chopped)
Big bunch of fresh mint (chopped)
Fresh coriander (chopped)
Cummin seeds
Garam Marsala (< teaspoon?)
Coconut cream (1 tin)
Sesame oil

Fry the spring onions and the cummin seeds in the seasame oil until just nice (onion clear and seeds crackling).

Add the lettuce mint and coriander and cook until a bit limp.

Add the coconut cream and garam marsala.

Add the peas.

Serve with rice.

Yummo!!

Ooh that looks NICE, might try and make that myself!

Not a protein source, but be sure to eat plenty of water cress, or similar nutritionally dense dark leafy vegetables (e.g., arugala, dandelion greens) if you can get your hands on a decent supply. Try not to rely soley on spinach and chard since they can interfere with iron absorption. (Will post more later if I don't forget about it.)

Alright so it's not a exactly a base ingredient and I don't know how available it is worldwide but Chioca is bloody lovely.
Also, Hooray for parsnips!

Simeon (Simeon), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Chioca look a lot like yams which I LOVE. Thanks for reminding me of that => I'm off to find a greengrocer.

I would never have thought to combine peas and lettuce in a curry... I think I'll try that tonight (with a side order of garlic yams)

Thank you Thank you Thank you.
