Putting his middle name in quotes is confusing. So they're implying that Hussein really isn't his middle name?

kinda feel like right-wing Billboards are going the way of Idiocracy and that by 25 years from now, they'll just be huge pics of whatever lib candidate is running and say "THIS GUY BAD. DO NO VOTE"
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 24 March 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)
No, I got that, it's just that I thought it was funny because when read/taken literally/correctly the implication is, "Oh, SURE, like Hussein is REALLY his middle name! We know the truth! It's 'Larry'!"

There's a small, creepy white-on-black billboard that I see on my drive to work that says "Honey, come home. The Kids [their capitalization] and I love you."

Caldwell, tax-free Communist China outpost.
― Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Sunday, 25 March 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)
In the 1870s and 1880s, Caldwell was home to hundreds of Chinese immigrants, but the town was central in Idaho's aggressive anti-Chinese backlash that culminated in an 1886 convention of the Anti-Chinese League in Boise. By 1890 every last immigrant had been driven from town by social pressures and outright violence.

Public library bashing is blowing my feeble liberal mind. Even Glenn Beck talked about how he learned all he knows from his public library. (And went on to say, "Because books are free," underlining his and many others' misunderstanding of what taxes are for.)

These people must see the entire world -- outside the US, outside their towns, outside their own homes, and probably just outside whatever they are thinking at the moment -- as an unmarked van full of candy to lure in our daughters, and a hidden briefcase full of rape.
The public library? Are you fucking kidding me? What are they even getting at with that argument?
― cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Sunday, 25 March 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)
People looking at porn on public computers?
― Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Sunday, 25 March 2012 03:52 (thirteen years ago)
Not saying that is the soul of the modern library by any means, but it's been a point of library controversy.
The point of controversy was never people looking at porn at the library, it was the filters that the libraries were putting up to keep people from doing something that they were not doing anyway, and preventing people from searching for terms like "breast cancer". The good guys won that one. And I've never seen a single person jerking off at the library. On the subway, sure, but not at the library. If they waged war on public transportation on moral grounds, I'd have to stop and consider my counter-argument for a moment.
― cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Sunday, 25 March 2012 04:05 (thirteen years ago)
I would also say the ALA-endorsed "Connect With a Sexual Deviant Day" played a part in the controversy.

1. Starve the Beast, keep your money.2. Vote out incumbents.3. If steps 1 & 2 fail?PREPARE FOR WAR.
As I read this, if you are unable to prevail using democratic means, because you lack wide public support for your ideas, then it is OK to kill your neighbors. What if they just have a barking dog that keeps me awake? Can I kill them for that? Because that makes more sense to me than killing them for not voting out incumbents.

Stanford.edu appears to be rather touchy about hot linking, I guess. 'Twas a photo of an "Impeach Earl Warren" billboard, referring voters to contact the John Birch Society for further info regarding this exciting political opportunity.
