Scotland vs Faroe Islands

The following is a genuine call on TalkSport about Scotland's 2-2 draw with the Faroe Islands.

"Alan Brazil: We have Jim on the line who wants to discuss the Faroe Islands / Scotland game.

Jim: Thanks...er yeah. Just want to say it's an absolute disgrace. I mean, we're playing probably the weakest side in world football and we can't do better than a draw.

Alan Brazil: It was a poor result.

Jim: Poor result! Poor result! It's absolutely scandalous. The manager has lost the plot completely, he's got to go. I know we've never set the world alight over the years on the international stage but I can't remember things being this bad. It's the end for us. The absolute end. I can't see us ever recovering from a setback like this. We're a complete laughing stock.

Alan Brazil: Look Jim. I know it seems bad now but there is still a long way to go. I can't see us qualifying for Euro 2004 but hopefully things will improve.

Jim: I never expected for a moment we would qualify. I don't mind that so much. We're not good enough. But listen, to not qualify is one thing, but to fail to beat a team like Scotland is a different matter. It's a bitter blow for everyone here on the Islands.

(Uproar and laughter in the studio)"

Wonderful.

Watching the England game in the pub was much enlivened by the pop up of the "Faroe Islands 2-1 Scotland". So much so I got carried away and cheered when Russia 2-0 Rep Of Ireland came up. Never a good idea in a North London boozer....

At least Scotland didn't have high expectations going into the game. Ireland entertained hopes of not just winning their group, but the ENTIRE TOURNAMENT. Is it too late to bring back Roy Keane? I don't care if he's a childish, moody fucker, I want to WIN.

am i the only one that can see that vogts is just lulling germany into a false sense of security?

well, Scotland won away to Germany as recently as 1999. But that was a friendly, and (opens big book of football cliches p.324) the Germans can't be motivated unless there's something to play for (closes said book)

an aberration, for sure. but the germans were wounded by that friendly defeat, nonetheless.

vogts knows this and seeks to undermine the germans' secret euro 2004 preparative strategy (of daily player flagellation for the ignominious failure in bremen three years ago) by carefully orchestrating a deceptive unprecedented run of scottish defeats.

and scotland will go on to win the whole thing in 2004. possibly.

TS: Faeroe Islands v. Svalbard.

Which is the one with all the nasty Russian miners and exiles?

ten years pass...

Fancy a Pint, Westray? (actually I'm not even sure there's a pub here. Can't see one from the ferry pier.)

I was out on Papa Westray earlier but it was too choppy to get my phone out.
