Sad but unsurprised Love & Death and Sweet and Lowdown didn't make it.

Old School is funnier than all of the Farrelly/Ferrell/Napoleon Dynamite/Apatow movies combined

I don't know why I didn't put Wedding Crashers in my top 10.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

lol apologies, tuomas! I mistook Addicted To Love for being in your 3rd place rather than 48th.

― da croupier, 4. huhtikuuta 2012 22:47 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

My ballot is in the order of points given, i.e. I only gave Addicted to Love 3 points. I like most of Harry Met Sally a lot, but I find its ultimate answer to the "Can men and women be just friends?" dilemma so disappointing (according to the movie they can't) that I can't really vote for it.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

Really? I want to see his #6 even more

i'm happiest that not only was i not the only person who voted for back to school, but that the other person who voted for it gave it even more (a LOT more) points than i did.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

You really do, rob! Amazing ballot btw - my partner's been trying to get me to watch Ball of Fire, guess I'd better get around to it.

If Al's still reading this thread - why Black Sheep? You're the first person I've known to express a liking for that film, and I've lived with people who worked on it, heh. Guess it codes differently outside NZ / isn't tainted by how much of a dick the director is.

etc, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

21 of my votes wound up in the final countdown, which i guess makes me pretty squarely ILX-centric in my comedy tastes:

A Shot in the Dark
Annie Hall
Being John Malkovich
Brazil
Delicatessen
Election
Kung Fu Hustle
My Man Godfrey
Napoleon Dynamite
Pink Flamingos
Playtime
Raising Arizona
Repo Man
Rushmore

well i guess i'm a sucker for horror comedy/parody (note that my ballot also includes Dead Alive, Shaun Of The Dead, Addams Family Values, Young Frankenstein, etc.) and Black Sheep is just one of those little known movies i've gotten very evangelical about, because it was one of those rare "oh this has a funny premise, let's watch it" rentals that actually turned out to be really funny and entertaining imo.

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:17 (thirteen years ago)

also really need to see more of the Ealings.

my partner's been trying to get me to watch Ball of Fire

@etc: I'm a pretty big Stanwyck stan (ha), and if you are too, you shouldn't hesitate (you may in fact die during the Gene Krupa "Drum Boogie" sequence). that said, it's generally not as beloved as say Bringing Up Baby. Having just seen Design for Living though, I think I'd like Ball of Fire even more now: it turns out Gary Cooper is both weirdly attractive and funny. there's a bunch on your list I need to check out, like all of your bollywood picks--I should have nominated the original Don, that movie is hilarious.

rob, Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

My ballot:

1. Trouble in Paradise
2. Tootsie
3. My Man Godfrey
4. Ghostbusters
5. Duck Soup
6. The Lady Eve
7. Sleeper
8. Slap Shot
9. Bringing Up Baby
10. I ::heart:: Huckabees
11. The Horse's Mouth
12. Good Morning
13. His Girl Friday
14. Metropolitan
15. Flirting With Disaster
16. A Fish Called Wanda
17. Rushmore
18. Midnight (1938)
19. The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear
20. Sherlock Jr

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

Midnight is a 1939 romantic comedy (with some elements of screwball comedy) directed by Mitchell Leisen and written by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder based on a story by Edwin Justus Mayer and Franz Schulz.[1] It starred Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche and John Barrymore.

okay, I really need to see that too.

rob, Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

I was the only person to vote for:

Henry Fool
The President's Analyst
The Last Detail
Ernest Saves Christmas
Brewster's Millions
Innerspace

methodologistology (los blue jeans), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

Midnight is amazing despite starring Don Ameche. If you're a Barrymore or Mary Astor fan, this movie does as much for their comedy chops as Twentieth Century (which almost made my ballot) and The Palm Beach Story do.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

lol, actually, because of Heaven Can Wait, Don Ameche was part of the attraction

Come on, dude. You're taking the wind out of Morbs' enraged spit-take sails with your run-on ellipses!

fyi Billy Wilder is a director with 2 films in the top 100 (both of which predate literally every single movie on your ballot), not the guy who played Willy Wonka

Big <3 for everyone who voted for Gremlins 2! The moment where the film "jams" and goes into TV static (or burns and goes into white screen in the cinema version), only for the Gremlins to appear and play shadow puppets is on of my favourite moments in the history of cinema. I remember me and my friends totally fell for it the first time we saw the movie; we were all like "OH NO, did the video break up?!", only to burst into hysterical laughter afterwards.

SD, pretty sure "Morbs' enraged spit-take" is a sign DWH was making a joke

da croupier, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't think anyone could mix up Billy Wilder with Johnny Depp.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)

Lol I think he meant Gene Wilder, Tuomas

I know.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

Just trying add my bit to the comedy of misunderstandings.

Tuomas, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

(My bad)

never knew Alfred flat-out hated Billy Wilder that much either

Some Like It Hot would def make a top forty.

I was the other Midnight voter. It has one of my favourite visual jokes ever (John Barrymore's phone message if you've seen it). I also had Twentieth Century on my ballot, Lombard and Barrymore together is just like catnip to me.

Thanks for clarifying, some dude, as I was genuinely, genuinely confused and my Google was totally broken at the time that I wrote that. When I saw but one set of footprints in the sand etc. etc.

no morbs but i was just going off the cultural radar depicted by your ballot

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

also if my sarcasm detector is broken, it's from you overstimulating with every single post in these threads for the past week

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

It's cool, dude. Although, following your logic, why would I have any keener an idea who Gene Wilder was (aside from being the dude who starred in Haunted Honeymoon?

(Also, I'd argue that a list of favored comedy films isn't necessarily terribly indicative of one's cultural radar.)

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

well, your ballot goes back to the mid-'70s, when Gene was at his peak and Billy was still around but not really doing anything that's been widely remembered
