The estimable Martin Skidmore suggested somewhere near or around the Tottenham Court Road namely the Rising Sun (easy to find apparently) or
The Bricklayers Arms
if theres more than a handful.

Barring delays on the Euro-star (and customs checks) I should be in central london around 12. Which pub should I head for?

(I'll be easy to spot, geek specs, green TOFFS St Etienne shirt, trying not to look like a tourist in my native country and probably failing.)

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 12 September 2002 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

me = tall, "large" and apparently, a big ponce

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Me, smallish, red hair, probably wearing some stupid item of clothing.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in London today (thursday 12th) for an early evening drink if anyone's around.

Just discovered ILM ... now discovered some of you people meet ... not in London every day (more like once a week) but would love to play when I can.

jon (jon), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

That's probably pushing it Jon - three FAP's in one week....

Tomorrow shall we make it the Rising Sun - as I'm not sure if the Brickies opens its upstairs at lunch.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Jon - we had a meet-up last night and some of us are still a bit tender :)

The thing to do is next time one is suggested say ah ok i can make this or that night and we'll try and accomodate, since new people at Fancy-A-Pints are always a good thing.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Rising Sun is fine by me Pete, is it actually on the Tottenham Court Road itself?

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, it is, walk up past the Sainsbury's and the cinema and there she blows on the left.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

there she suXoRs surely?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

have fun, people. hope the sun shines like it is now.

jon (jon), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, the Rising Sun it is - I bet it'll be busy. I'm 5'7, #1 crop, grey suit, red tie (that's a description for Stevo, not Pete, Anna, Chris, etc., who know what I look like).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

2. The Rising Sun - 46 Tottenham Court Road
Greene King Abbot; Charles Wells Bombardier; Courage Directors; Theakstons Old Peculier, XB and Best; Ushers Bitter.

Once reduced to being called Presley's in the Seventies, it still retains a somewhat elaborate exterior, not quite in the same style as the rest of the area. It is now restored to a reasonable J-shaped bar, which is usually very busy at the main entrance, but empties out towards the inner reaches. Has a small range of foreign bottled beers as well (e.g. Timmermans, Leffe and Budvar).

I take its better we try for a place by the 'inner reaches'.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 5'7,

I thought this said 57 at first and I was like 'surely he's not *that* old'.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah (starry), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

How long are you all going to be there? I may experience delays trying to track someone with a bad case of Ibiza Vague down.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

About an hour - its only lunchbreak for those who work for The Man (or The Student).

I did think of checking back in at the pub at 5pm in case several people were still there, but I didn't. I enjoyed that today - we should do it again.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 13 September 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

my life is a ruin.

and yes Gareth, I did end up in the Garage, and yes Gareth it was k-rub.

But we did have the coolest taxi driver home, deepest baritone voice you've ever heard, singing along with Jazz and soul classics, selling drugs and charging small amounts of mioney. I'm paying the price now though.

chris (chris), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers Martin, Anna, Chris, Graham and Pete, that was fun. Great meeting you all, thanks for putting up with my thirst for IL* gossip (nothing too salacious too report alas). A most pleasant way to spend our first afternoon in London. Hope to do it again some time.

Fingers crossed for the job Chris.
