well? should there? the idea got a mixed reception last night.

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Let it be so.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're talking American Football I'm game, but I doubt it would go far on ILx. These board's are loaded with Anglos and Anglophiles - soccer's the only sport that generates much discussion. Note the lack of a Johnny U RIP thread (as of this posting).

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

not soccer, football, you know, the round ball game.

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I can see the attraction but on balance I think probably not. It's not like the football threads here are overwhelming, is it?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Aargh!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, being Facetious (sp?)

is Johnny Unitas dead then? Heard of the name, can't remember why, early superbowls????

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I can see the attraction but on balance I think probably not. It's not like the football threads here are overwhelming, is it?

No, but you could see it as an opportunity rather than a problem.

I'm only participating if it's called 'I Love Soccer' though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

95% of football discussion groups rapidly fill up with infantile, aggressive, hate-filled nonsense eg 'my club is better than yours + i'll kick the sh*t out of you next time we play you away' etc.

The better 5% are generally password protected and are careful who they let in. I like the odd football thread on ILE but there are plenty of alternative groups purely dedicated to the game and I'd hate to see IL* damaged by the trolls who usually hang out in them.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

that was the main anti-point last night Stevo.

N. please get on the train down here so I can kick your arse.

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Johnny U, maybe the greatest quarterback ever (until Michael Vick), very old school NFL, won a Super Bowl, on the losing side in the greatest Super Bowl upset ever, on the winning side in the greatest NFL game ever played (58 championship vs. New York Football Giants), Baltimore icon.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ILE works because it's a great big daft slopping soup of - erm - everything. I like the idea of coming across things by accident, which isn't likely to happen so much if every enthusiasm has its own little locker room.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The reason I can't come to the lunchtime FAP (FALP?) is because me & Gashead Skidmore would come to murderous blows over Saturday's game. A game to which I (loyal supporter) am going and he (part-timer) is not.

Oh no! It's started already!

I agree with Stevo.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe this thread can be about American football and rest of the globe football and the two can keep bumping awkwardly into each other.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think an I love football would be a good idea, as football is a part of everything and why not just keep it here? People don't have to read sports threads. There will be an I Love Movies, I Love Bangb*s, I Love Not Going on Dates, I Love Art etc before you know it... If there was an ILF, I probably wouldn't use. Not that I think that will sway any final decision! :)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

What jel said.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, no probs, twas just a thought.

Anyway, what the hell happened in the Premiership last night??? all the victories seemed to be the wrong way round and Liverpool throw away a two goal lead *again* Houllier is right, they should be top of the league.

added to that Barca got knocked out of the Spanish cup by a third division side *again*!!

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I Love Football should, if it existed, only be about Soccer and Aussie Rules - games where lots of footing of the ball occurs.

Union, League and Gridiron are more like Handball than Football. An occasional kick of the ball is not enough. Also, their scoring allows things like 'placing the ball on the ground' to earn points. That's just not good enough to entitle them to be referred to as Football.

Seeing as there is a worthy game already called Handball they should stick to being called Union, League and Gridiron.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes and backgammon should only be played on a real back of gammon!!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

And handball? - that ball's not made of hands!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Considering how much of ILx is generated by cross-Atlantic misunderstandings and debate I move that I Love Football incorporate known to its participants and spectators as 'football'. Even Canadian football. Even, alas, Arena League Football.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Inbetween incorporate and known insert anything.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a town in Georgia named Between so that when you are there you are in Between.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a town in Tasmania called Plenty because you can catch plenty of fish there.

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and don't forget gaelic football, which is what is meant by football in many parts of ireland. yer english-style football is called soccer here.

angela (angela), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

No it's not.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

No, because throughout the football season you will all disapear off to ILF and you'll abandon us. Keep boards united!

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that I'd care.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Do keep the boards united.

"You know you've arrived as a quarterback when you can tell the coach to go to hell." - Johnny Unitas

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Houllier is right, they should be top of the league.

Under that new rule where the score at 80mins counts double?

What was that old Bob Paisley line about playing until the final whistle?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

thankyou Michael.

I should have added "if they didn't get so bloody complacent in the last ten minutes"

chris (chris), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Just joshing, Cabbage. I need something to cheer me up at the moment (another flurry of terrible finishing at St Mary's last night) and I'm finding the Reds' Late-Equaliser-With-Every-Game special offer (expiry: 31.12.02... hopefully) hugely comical.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

yes it is andrew, though not so much in dublin which is why i said "many parts of ireland". all my culchie workmates refer to gaelic as football, and football as soccer. i refer to them the other way round and they call me a west brit. what a pity the "dublin - c or d" thread is locked.

angela (angela), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i refer to them the other way round and they call me a west brit
What, you sometimes call GAA 'soccer'? That is truly madness.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

West Brit n.

Derogatory term for s.o. apeing the manners of British establishment; West Briton. Pejorative. An Anglophile, someone who perceives Ireland as West Britain, or a middle-class Dubliner, typically southside (especially Dublin 4), stereotypically with liberal attitudes on moral issues.

unpleasant little insult. Reminds me of the GAA lads at uni opining that cricket was 'a game for virgins'.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasn't clear there N., sorry. i call gaelic football 'gaelic' and soccer 'football'. as far the west brit name calling goes, it's meant light-heartedly and isn't far off the mark as i am a middle-class dubliner who lives on the southside (dublin 6) and has liberal views on social issues. i also went to trinity so that settles it.

angela (angela), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Subbuteo

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's I Love Soccer it would be ILS, like the breakbeat artist of the same name. It's a great idea in some ways, I imagine really picky threads about certain games and goals and incidents and just a general elevation of football discussion to the levels other things get discussed around here. The potential seems huge, but the points Stevo made are also quite good ones. Still though.....the IL* dynamic put into football discussions might be worth a gamble.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 September 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos at the moment football threads are sort of like "hey and by the way, did anyone see the match last night?????"

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to effectively spam this thread, but would anyone like to join me?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, you can just go and start one, it doesn't have to be officially sanctioned.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I have started one - and now I'd like to see if other folk would like to create teams that I can add to the league.

Of course, if they've already got teams which are members of other friends' leagues, then that's tough luck for me.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops - you were talking about an ILF/S forum, not a fantasy league! Apologies...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

"95% of football discussion groups rapidly fill up with infantile, aggressive, hate-filled nonsense eg 'my club is better than yours + i'll kick the sh*t out of you next time we play you away' etc"

So it'll just be like ILM except we talk about football teams instead of bands? I'm game.

I can't join it Jonesy :o( I'm already in a league (and they get stroppy about multiple teams)

ILS=ILF, not the other ILF

The Man With the Magic Eardrums (Billy Dods), Friday, 26 March 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

I am opposed to any plans to create an I Love Football. Especially before the World Cup, which should be on ILE like it should be on terrestrial television.

I Love ... Soccer ?

Mark G, Friday, 26 March 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

'Which stadium does the best pies?' All the Americans would get hugely confused and a big fight about food would ensue.

Come on over, ile. We don't mean it when we bite.

Achillean Heel (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)

five months pass...

just curious really, but why are there still football threads on ile if they have their own board now? like i keep seeing Kenny Dalglish Won't Be Delivering the Module: English Premiership 2011-12 and wondering if somehow i'm getting ILF on new answers.

Mordy, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

that thread was left there as it's the most popular monolithical thread dealing with day-to-day football matters

ilf has more localised/specialised threads

You might see the odd movie thread on ile, it's that kind of thing.

When the world cup comes round again, i'd imagine the rolling thread will be on ile and not ilf, that kind of reasoning

Juata Man (darraghmac), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

oh, some of that thread's regulars were against ilf as balkanisation, so that was another reason to leave that one on ile
