(CNN) -- A Navy jet crashed Friday near Virginia Beach, Virginia, a military spokesman said.

The plane appears to have crashed into some apartments, and two apartment buildings were on fire, CNN affiliate WTKR reporting, citing witnesses.

The jet was from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Authorities did not immediately know the status of the crew of the two-seater F/A-18, said Lt. Cmdr. Mike Kafka, a Navy spokesman

Media reports say a Navy jet crashed in Virginia Beach and the two aviators aboard are believed to have ejected before the impact.

holy cats. have always been a bit surprised that this doesn't happen more often. guess there's a lot more ground than there are buildings/people on it.

Yeah, a lot of times pilots will purposefully try to steer their aircraft away from buildings/populated areas. It still goes badly sometimes though (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_San_Diego_F/A-18_crash).

We live near a small airfield and have little planes flying over our house all the time. I'm way more worried about them than a military jet. Who knows how many incapable hobbyist pilots are out there? Is the ratio comparable to terrible elderly drivers? Gah. There was also a pretty sketchy incident with a blimp trying to land in high winds a few months back.

Witness/photographer was just saying on CNN that training flights have been flying lower and lower lately.

This story was in the news again in Belgium because there's a book about it now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Belgian_MiG-23_crash (TL;DR: a Russian fighter jet flew without a pilot from Poland and almost reached the North sea - 560 miles. It crashed on a house - as if it had been aimed straight at it, none of the neighboring houses were hit - killing one 18 year old guy who was asleep (he'd just finished his exams and that's why he wasn't with his parents and siblings who were out shopping, I remember this happening, it's not that far from where I grew up) )

(The pilot, who ejected right after takeoff in Poland, sent a hand written letter of apology to the parents - seen on TV a couple of weeks ago)

"There are no reports of any injuries on the ground."

wow hard to believe. really lucky if that's true.

I used to live near Oceana when I worked at the Norfolk / Va Beach newspaper.
