The ilx registration thing seems somewhat problematic to me - has anyone else found this?

PS / reasons it seems problematic:

1. it won't let you write things till you have logged in

2. if you are logged in, it sets up name etc automatically - thus making it more likely that things will be posted prematurely.

Personally I think I had better be de-registered, if that's possible. Whether anyone else shares my view that it's a problem is another issue.

1. It's a problem, but I figured one of the features people wanted was not having people impersonate them, and probably wouldn't think to turn it on until after something happened, but it's turned on by default. Plus there's that popup menu at the bottom of the post message page - Select unlock permanently, and you no longer have the problem.

2. I emailed you instructions:
'Anyway, two steps: Go to the bottom of any page, click Settings, and select "Yes" under "Allow messages to be posted with my name and email address without my password", and click the Save button towards the bottom. Then go to the bottom of another page and click "Logout".'

Wha?

1. Well yes, if you use your normal name and email it will ask you for your password to check that it's you - that's part of the point of registration (to stop people impersonating you). But typing in your password once shouldn't take a second, should it? Depending on how your computer is set up, you should only have to do this once for each machine you use, or at worst once a day.

2. I suppose I see what you mean in principle, but I always used to type in my name and email before my message first anyway, so I don't see this as a problem. I suppose Graham could add a thing in user options that previewed your post and asked if you really wanted to send it, but I don't think I'd turn this option on.

Graham, I still can't log in properly. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? (In this respect; I'm not looking for a universal critique here).

But there is no 'Settings'!!

the pinefox (the pinefox), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

What about now?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

-- then I found a Settings - what an elaborate page! extraordinary.

I must say that the construction (?) of this ILX thing is marvellous in many ways, despite the problem I have just explained.

Ellie, I think I asked you about this before - the remember my name thing on Greenspun worked for you, right?

Are you using a work computer that was set up by someone else, because I've experienced much cookie weirdness with the university computers.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham: yeh, I know I've bleated on about this before and thanx for trying to help. The Greenspun thing always worked. Ilxor does recognise my name and password but the login has to be repeated every time I post. It's probably no bad thing becus I'm trying to wean off anyway. And yes, I'm using a work computer (and an old version of Netscape) so I guess it's a system problem that I can't solve. Nevah mind.

Ooh, I know what it might be. Are your bookmarks set to www.ilxor.com and not ilx.wh3rd.net? - there are problems because the ilxor.com domain name still isn't working properly.

i don't have any problems and i like it just the way it is. yay graham

Yeah - works sweet for me.

I like the Search functions too - Great for spying on Issadora's posts.
