SAVAGES bring us horribly distended thread titles

Blake Lively as Ophelia "O"

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

I've been waiting for Salma Hayek to become a cartoonish villain, so yay. Too bad it took Oliver Stone to get her into this role.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

even money that there is an uma-travolta pulp fiction ref joek scene

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

this looks like it will be p bad but i will probably watch it, looks like sthing that would have been commissioned in 1997 w/ vaguely racist sadistic/sybaritic mexicans, cokebloat comeback stars, thudding electrodribble, general skeeziness

also why would u name some putz called 'taylor kitsch' in the title rather than benicio del toro

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Monday, 9 April 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

Because Taylor Kitsch is Tim Riggins and lots of people love him.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

Also, I temporarily blanked on Benicio.

...making Blow look like a paragon of subtlety and restraint. Arguing about Stone is difficult, because everything that makes this film look so awful was there from the start; those (like me) who once liked his films a lot will disagree as to when he crossed the line into self-parody, while those who never liked him won't see the line at all.

clemenza, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

I can definitely tell the difference between Salvador and this. The swandive into self-parody came with Natural Born Killers imo.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

this film is disgusting Savages

A 3-way love story set against a backdrop of American/Mexican drug suppliers at war. Fun!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

NBK is probably where most fans would locate the line; I love Nixon, though, even though I've given up on trying to get anyone else to.

clemenza, Monday, 9 April 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

Nixon was great! I liked Dubya too.

and the Doors.

His movies are for the most part rides. Some of them are Bad Boys II, and some are Pearl Harbor. Prety much everything after NBK is Pearl Harbor.

looks like hot crap. and blake lively is one of the worst, dullest, least convincing actors alive today. calling her wooden insults trees.

came here to mockingly post this

and yeah should have bailed. instead I made it an hour and a half in but quit when I realized there was still 45 minutes left.

worst later scene (mild spoilers if you care about being spoiled on this garbage) was when captive Blake Lively finally gets the big boss on Skype and just asks her for weed

dmr, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago)

I'd forgotten all about this. I'm not sure if it even got a release here. Which is fine (although once-big-name directors not getting a release is probably a bad thing in general).

clemenza, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago)

xp hah yes. i think i turned it off abt the same point. imo taylor kitsch should never act in anything ever again unless reprising riggins

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago)

also whoever picked the music should be ashamed to use "Legalize It" for a weed montage. so entry level.

dmr, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago)

It should be noted that this movie, however shitty it might be (and I bet it's pretty fucking shitty, because Stone hasn't made a good movie since Salvador), is not entirely to blame for its own shittiness. I read the book Savages, by Don Winslow, and it is terrible. It's written in that horrible post-James Ellroy style where chapters are one five-word sentence long, where sentences are chopped up and
laid
out
on the page
like this
for
no reason...
Also, it randomly switches from prose to screenplay format at several points, for no reason at all. Just worthless.

誤訳侮辱, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 18:53 (eleven years ago)

lol

the recent Ellroy is more like a string of 1000 one- and two-word sentences in a row
