j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

New "School days, school days, dear old break the rules days" answers.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, I am outsider too. But I knew the outcome before I even started the damn quiz.

I think I'm a secret goth though, because I deliberately didn't choose the nihilist questions even though they almost fitted best.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I answered the questions honestly, turns out I'm an outsider too.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I am also an outsider...looks like a predictable theme is beginning here.

nory (nory), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

me too, whats this shit on it? im much more geek than outsider

vic (vicc13), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm an honest-to-goodness geek. But I only had to change my one marginal answer to be a goody-two-shoes.

Either way, all you outsiders suck.

B:Rad (Brad), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

There's something wrong with that survey. I know that I was (in retrospect, pathetically and embarrassingly) popular in high school - Head Prefect, member of the best cricket, rugby and basketball teams (and captain of some of those), drama, music, blah, blah. All of which are fairly pukey memories now...but they hardly made me an outsider then.

debaser (debaser), Friday, 13 September 2002 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe its your secret innermost soul, not the outside trappings.

isadora, Friday, 13 September 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Jock!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 13 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I am FURIOUS that they did not have a "slacker" category. "I am most comfortable wearing..." "Eight year-old Levis and a Ramones t-shirt."
"My goal in life is..." "...to make an independent kung-fu zombie film."

Nate Patrin, Friday, 13 September 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I am somehow a goth! Shit! Just 'cause I wear a lot of black. I am so confused right now...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 13 September 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate Patrin = Quentin Tarantino?

outsiders yr hair = cute

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 September 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe we're all just trying too hard to be cool "Oh, I didn't care".

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I was the outsider too! But I went back and changed some answers and i was still the outsider. I think I have the same attitude towards work. I have to purge my mind of equating school with work.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 13 September 2002 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

another one for the outsider pile here. i tried to give the answers the 16-year old me would have given. i think goody-two-shoes would have been most appropriate, and yes college did destroy my innocent mind, and i never even said thank you.

angela (angela), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Sam (chirombo), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Ohhh I got outsider too, despite wanting to be the goth just for the "my goal in life is"... "to hurt you. Severely. Come here".

Or is that the outsider response??

Gosh I'm hungry this morning. Are you?

Sarah (starry), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm bouncy and grinny and about to fall over. Not hungry though.

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Stupid attempt at detox sees me eating nothing but raisins since yesterday lunchtime. So yes, I am hungry. (I am also an outsider.)

Archel (Archel), Friday, 13 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh groo that sounds unappealing. I am detoxing by drinking hot chocolate and BY GUM it's nice. I am very much looking forward to having some pub food at lunchtime. Hey! My friend has lent me a Kate Bush video rar rar I haf my plans for the weekend sorted out!

Sterling I think we knew that.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 13 September 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe we're all just trying too hard to be cool "Oh, I didn't care".

No, I honestly didn't. I used to run bets on whether I could make certain female students cry within two periods.

What a nice person I was/am.

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 13 September 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I was the outsider too. I gave the answers the 16 year old me would have given aswell but that's because the 16 year old me controls the horizontal and the vertical.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 September 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Outsider. BIG fukcing surprise there.

N0RM4N PH4Y, Friday, 13 September 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

haha Jock. I am 5 foot 7 and studied maths at Cambridge. I am only a Jock in the fairly weedy ILE context, I think. And even then I am at best an ex-Jock, i.e. I used to be good at football and other sports but now I am 43 and utterly past it.

alex, Saturday, 14 September 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

the results were predictable....but i was much less a brooder than i was a marginalized wit (wishful thinking maybe ?)

I'm an outsider, too!

*ahem* I was, of course, answering purely on what I would've said at around that time.

I think right now I'd lean more toward geek.

Same difference, honestly.

Huh. That's weird. In reality at the time I thought I was an outsider, but really I was a complete and utter GEEK.

Jocks unite!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a result for "Self-Righteous Smuggo"? I probably won that one hands down (probably still could, too -- d'oh).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 April 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still the outsider.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 19 April 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Outsider, which is OTM, but the profile falls apart after that. And truth be told, it's probably outsider/geek. Miserable and bored, sure, but not dysfunctional. Well, maybe a little.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Saturday, 19 April 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Geek. duh.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 19 April 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I refuse to take the test, but I wanna be the crusty, bitter old dean who's always giving the members of Chugalug House a hard time.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, this is HIGH SCHOOL stereotypes? Okay, then I wanna be the guy who gets straight As and gets to go to the college of his choice. HA!

oh, so GEEK

luna (luna.c), Saturday, 19 April 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

This is so unnecessary. I had a dice bag in high school and I played in the marching band. Nearly all of my friends from HS got technical or hard sciences degrees and have either completed or are working on some kinda postgraduate wackiness. However, if I answer the questions re: my current lifestyle choices - of course I'm a jock. I do kinda want to hit people who play Magic: The Gathering.

I came out as Outsider, but this is surely wrong, cos I was mates with everyone and a right gobby shite to boot.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 20 April 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I was an outsider, but I would have described myself as "a jock with a heart of gold". Weird quiz.

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 20 April 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Geek. But "Outsider" would have been just as (in)accurate.

Chris P (Chris P), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

outsider - not surprised by the result

H (Heruy), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I expected geek, got jock, thought "outsider" would've been the most accurate until I saw that it was all hate-the-world-y. Who knows. I didn't go to high school much.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't it obvious to everyone which answers went to which stereotype? part of me really wanted to pick the Goody Two-Shoes answers for everything

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I just took it again, and I'm no longer a jock - I am now an outsider apparently. That's not right either - I had loads of friends and was popular. The questions and options are very unconvincing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 20 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

quiz, by Angel.

Dude, I didn't even take gym.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 4 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, in America gym is optional? We had to take Physical Education, as it is most often called here, until 16 at least.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It was required, but I got out through a loophole ... I was on track to graduate a year early, and had signed up for two alternate programs in a row which were meant to replace gym (because I could use that slot in the day for higher-credit courses). Both programs were cancelled, the second with too little warning for me to find a replacement, and I'd already been accepted to a college and so on. They fished around and I spent a Saturday clearing trails at the conservation area.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 4 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

Draw a social map of your high school or some job or other place, and, like, you know, how people talked, and stuff, and categories like “hoods” and “preppies” and “dirtbags”; or write about your life, or something.

That was one of Frank Kogan’s four questions for Why Music Sucks #8, June 1995. I wrote a long thing about my high school years that I still count among the best things I’ve written. Can’t imagine writing anything so personal now.

Beyond Clueless, which I saw at the documentary festival this afternoon, covers the same territory through films clips. Lots and lots of films clips, all from the ‘90s or ‘00s. (The director explained afterwards that he didn’t want it to end up being a John Hughes tribute, and didn’t want the clips to look radically different. The director’s about 25 and, British accent notwithstanding, looks like he escaped from a John Hughes film.) During the Q&A, as the credits rolled, I counted how many of the films I’d seen. It felt like I’d hardly seen any, but I counted 28, which I'd estimate is between 10-20% of what’s there; there are probably 150-200 films represented. Some of the clips must be subliminal--no recollection at all of Ghost World, Good Will Hunting, or a couple of others. Critics’ films like The Virgin Suicides and Elephant get a brief clip or two; things like The Craft, The Girl Next Door, and (the director named it as his favourite) EuroTrip get much more.

It’s like an essay, arranged into chapters, but I’m just not close enough to the genre or the films to comment on the progression (“Acting Out,” “Moving On,” etc.). Somebody was bending the director’s ear in the lobby afterwards, so I didn’t get a chance to mention a couple of instances where I think he should have broken from his self-imposed time-frame. If you’ve got a montage of masturbation clips, you’ve got to have Judge Reinhold/Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And a montage of prom queens has to have Carrie. (Carrie 2: The Rage gets a non-prom clip.) Within that time-frame, in the Walking Down the Hall as Everyone Looks On montage, I would have included Josh Hartnett/Trip Fontaine in The Virgin Suicides.

I enjoyed it--if, like me, you’re not overly attached to the John Hughes films, you’ll want to see it. No trailer, but I found a YouTube clip of a Q&A at SXSW. Yesterday, a very different high school documentary, Guidelines out of Quebec. Very much in the tradition of Wiseman’s High School and The Class--mundane everyday high school stuff intercut with various students in counselling sessions. Excellent scene with a stoner kid about to begin an internship.
