Man, I hated Brooklyn from 1993 to 1997, I was so ahead of the whole Brooklyn hating curve that all those hipsters are just getting into now.

Popcorn Supergay Receiver (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

I bet you'd like different parts of it better!

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

what was wrong with it, too affordable?

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

my first exposure to Brooklyn was 1996; it basically represented my platonic ideal of what A City should be and one of my biggest personal regrets is that I never pulled my shit together enough to find work in NYC and move there

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

I lived in Queens, then, which was just infinitely superior. And also cheaper.

Popcorn Supergay Receiver (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

I guess outside of random trips with my family that I don't remember to visit old family friends, I probably first hung out in Brooklyn in like 2000? 2001? I had a few friends who were ahead of me in school and moved to Williamsburg and Park Slope, and not long after that I started playing shows at various crappy Williamsburg venues. TBH I didn't like Williamsburg at all back then and still don't even though I live there now. It used to look like something from an apocalyptic video game. Now it still does but with ugly oversized condo buildings arbitrarily placed hither and thither.

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

voting Manhattan cause I've lived here for so long (and living here for so long is how I can afford Manhattan)

staten island challopers know how its done

lag∞n, Saturday, 28 April 2012 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

seven years pass...

God dammit i was going to do this.

I complained about new york a lot last year, but every night i can’t help from staring at the skyline from the (uninsulated, drafty) window of my (tiny) bedroom. There is real sublimity to manhattan. I feel line one would have to be very insensitive to not be moved (at some level) by such a dense concentration of humanity.

treeship., Friday, 10 January 2020 23:21 (five years ago)

The answer is brooklyn though. Brooklyn is the best borough by far.

I live in manhattan now but queens is still the best

iatee, Friday, 10 January 2020 23:25 (five years ago)

Queens is sooooo much better than Brooklyn.

dan selzer, Friday, 10 January 2020 23:31 (five years ago)

queens brooklyn manhattan the bronx staten island

adam, Friday, 10 January 2020 23:34 (five years ago)

agreed, though there are times when manhattan pushes back past brooklyn.

dan selzer, Friday, 10 January 2020 23:35 (five years ago)

I've been in queens for 8 years now and really like it, but sometimes I feel a little challopsy saying it's "better than brooklyn." I mean it's certainly better than brooklyn for me, a dad who wants to be able to afford to live somewhere that has a decent school, and obviously there is tons of awesome shit about queens that I could spend paragraphs raving about, but if I had brooklyn money I might still live in brooklyn

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 10 January 2020 23:41 (five years ago)

queens, manhattan, brooklyn, bronx>>>>>>>>Staten Island.

Yerac, Friday, 10 January 2020 23:43 (five years ago)

I mean, let's face it, there is some stuff about queens that kind of sucks. Queens Boulevard is horrible. Many neighborhoods are badly laid out and have ugly buildings. Many neighborhoods are underserved by transit. We have a lot of shitty chain-restaurants and half-assed malls. Maybe some of those things are true in some parts of brooklyn as well, but there is a big chunk of brooklyn that is not like that.

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:01 (five years ago)

In short, parts of Queens want to be the suburbs. Parts of Brooklyn do, too, but they still have better train service and no massive redevelopment projects to make the environment out of scale. In lieu of malls, they just doubled down on the SUVs and Blue Lives Matter bumper stickers.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Saturday, 11 January 2020 00:03 (five years ago)

most people mean north of prospect park brooklyn when they say brooklyn and west of flushing meadows queens when they say queens. I think that's fine as a convention, both boroughs have multiple identities and it's hard to make any sort of claim that encompasses both long island city and howard beach. (whereas 90% of manhattan is the same neighborhood)

iatee, Saturday, 11 January 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

I need a new 1987-cheap boro

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 11 January 2020 03:02 (five years ago)

my situation in brooklyn is so unreasonably fortuitous that if it ended i'd probably just leave nyc or even america

queens sounds amazing, for people who go outside and do and (especially) eat things. i am proud to live near queens; less so staten island

mookieproof, Saturday, 11 January 2020 04:48 (five years ago)

I'll have to vote for Queens first because I live here, Brooklyn second because I like to go out there (but mostly North Brooklyn, especially Greenpoint because that is the easiest to get to for me), third Manhattan because that's where I see movies sometimes, fourth the Bronx that I almost never make it to but I suspect has a lot of great things in it (excepting Yankee Stadium), and fifth Staten Island because of course. Withstanding my personal preference, I do believe that Manhattan is still the star and the other boroughs satellites, though Brooklyn has so much cultural cred now than it did say 20 years ago. I think that Brooklyn is the aspirational borough, Queens is the attainable borough, and Manhattan is the borough that no one that I know seems to live in anymore.

SI has some stuff to recommend it. Good Sri Lankan restaurants. A restaurant where the cooks are always an Italian grandma and a grandma from another region of the world.
