He died a couple of months back but I don't recall seeing an ILE thread about him.

I thought he was a great actor - for me, the definitive Number Two in The Prisoner, though of course he is fated to be remembered best for Rumpole. He did some fantastic interpretations of Beckett on stage as well. Shame about those UK Indepedence Party political broadcasts in his final years, but no one's perfect.

Also, along with Jack Thompson, Bill Kerr and Geoffrey Rush, probably my favourite Australian actor.

Sistrah Becky wz at college w.his daughter, who is v.nice and once lent me a typewriter which I then left on the bus, and had to to buy her another one. So whenever I see him I think of her, really: she adored him. He had been frail and ill for some years sadly.

My two lasting memories of the man are [i] him being buried alive as Bugenhagen in the second Omen film, [ii] as a sour and cynical Fleet Street hack in The Day The Earth Caught Fire. I should probably treasure the latter and try not to think quite so much about the former.
