the old guy is refering to the Olympics just before Worlf War 2, or was it a World Cup, anyway I'm sure there was some big world sports event just before WWII.

but I had a look and couldn't find any gold medallists called Frank...he may have got the silver or bronze.

Actually the only medal winning Frank at the 1936 olympics was Frank Wykoff...a gold as a member of the 4*100metres relay. I don't reckon this'll be the same Frank as in this conversation.

Berlin Olympics was my assumption too. But later on they were talking about some sort of state event or royal visit involving King George VI or even Edward VIII (a fascist sympathiser)- did Geo VI ever visit Germany say, 1936/37? (Frank could have been an offical of some sort). Or involved with Chamberlain's visits in 1938/9?
