you'd have to be nuts to vote for almonds

dayo, Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

i like them

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

What? Hazelnuts are garbage nuts! Almonds are the best.

Potty Problems (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

Roasted almonds are better to eat by themselves than hazelnuts. I kind of prefer them in chocolate as well.

I really like hazelnuts in choc and my dad's homemade hazelnut ice cream is some of the best I've ever had but almonds are my favorite nut of all time and one of my favorite foods in general. I can't not vote for almonds. <3 almonds <3

wolf kabob (ENBB), Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

Hazelnuts are absolutely essential for a choc'n'nut Cornetto.

Cheggers Plays Populous (snoball), Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

That slightly stale taste, combined with the smell of cinema ashtrays, takes me right back to my childhood.

Hazelnuts can fuck right off.

Cheggers Plays Populous (snoball), Saturday, 21 April 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

I was going to add 'I don't want any other kind of nuts in my mouth' but then decided not to.

Cheggers Plays Populous (snoball), Saturday, 21 April 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

hazelnuts are great, underrated nutmeat. good in chocolate, for snacking, in meusli & granola. nutella also a mark in the hazelnut's favor. but it's hard to beat an almond. top class nut, imo.

hey snoball don't fuck with walnuts

call all destroyer, Sunday, 22 April 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

hazelnuts are dumb imo; walnuts are pretty cool for the most part

*i meant almonds! but i like walnuts better than either

call all destroyer, Sunday, 22 April 2012 04:02 (thirteen years ago)

Allergic to hazelnuts, so almonds by default.

raw feel vegan (silby), Sunday, 22 April 2012 04:08 (thirteen years ago)

raw almonds, and anything made with almond extract or almond flour, is maybe the only food that i've tried that makes me gag. roasted almonds otoh have been my daily lunch for months now.

hazelnut milk is awesome. hazelnuts with roasted beans and red peppers is also awesome.

Walnuts are amazing! Cheap sub for pinenuts in pesto.

just1n3, Sunday, 22 April 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

i've never been able to get there with walnuts. they remind me of sad christmas bowls. bitter, woody, grudgeful things. plus i can get cheapish pinenuts at the foreign store.

i can't really deal with walnuts. hence no poll place for them. and yet still, here they are, intruding like the chalky fiendish bastards they are.

ALMONDS. Because MARZIPAN.

God I wish the entire WORLD was made of marzipan.

I am now going to be combing West Penwith for marzipan if I have to scrape it off mini battenburgs to get it.

interesting poll because these are the 2 new flavours of Alpro soya drink here in the UK; i've only had the Almond one of these and it was FOUL.
i'm hoping the Hazelnut will be better. but seriously how do you get 'milk' from an Almond, or a Hazelnut anyway?

http://munchforhealth.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/alpro1.jpg

piscesx, Sunday, 22 April 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

I voted hazelnut because I'm drinking hazelnut coffee right now, but I like almonds and walnuts as well.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Sunday, 22 April 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

I drink almond milk regularly. Well, I shouldn't say drink because I've never had a glass of it but it's almost exclusively what I use in my coffee and cereal and stuff.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Sunday, 22 April 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's easy to make nutmilk xxp

dayo, Sunday, 22 April 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

Take raw nuts
Place in blender (preferably a vitamix or similar)
Add about2 cups of water fOr every half cup of nuts
Blend for 5 minutes
Strain through cheesecloth
Profit

just1n3, Sunday, 22 April 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

You can also add vanilla or cocoa or sweetener

just1n3, Sunday, 22 April 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

though i voted for the almond, i find marzipan hideous. sometimes i will buy a nice croissant or such and find that the night man has secretly filled it with dreaded marzipan. the rank faeces of magical gnomes.

yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)

Hazelnuts because NUTELLA.

does Red Stripe work like poppers? (Abbbottt), Sunday, 22 April 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

I like them both, but I somethimes get a mild reaction to hazelnuts (tingly mouth), so I limit my intake. I eat almonds much more freely.

Aimless, Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

i voted almonds, but i almost went with hazelnuts, because my bf loves hazelnut lattes. and i am supportive of his decision.

tits or kitfo (get bent), Sunday, 22 April 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

I soak the almonds for a day before making almond milk iirc. Also a thing with walnuts you can do is put them on a baking sheet (probably on some parchment paper on a baking sheet) and sprinkle some soy sauce and bake at 400-ish for five or ten minutes and then remove from the oven and let em cool a little. or do the same thing with a little oil & salt & pepper. also do this with almonds, the soy sauce version idk about the oil salt pepper version w/almonds but the soy sauce home-infused almonds will give you perspective on your life

same old song and placenta (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 22 April 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

^^ this soy sauce thing is also delicious when it is done to cashews iirc

i have become a bit allergic to hazelnuts over the past five years (tight throat, difficult breathing, itchy mouth) and it makes me super sad - fresh cobnuts used to be one of my favourite things.

i bought some almond butter recently: i don't really... get it? it doesn't seem to taste as good as, like, actual almonds.

c sharp major, Monday, 23 April 2012 08:39 (thirteen years ago)

interesting poll because these are the 2 new flavours of Alpro soya drink here in the UK; i've only had the Almond one of these and it was FOUL.

They're both super-sweet cos they've added a shitload of sugar to them. The hazelnut one has the edge though imo.

Friends of Mr Caeiro (NickB), Monday, 23 April 2012 09:59 (thirteen years ago)

soaking nuts & then doing stuff with them is a great move. like cashew cream, blending water-bloated cashews to houmous consistency & then using to thicken & kinda sweeten soups and stuff.

almonds are >>> hazelnuts, here. hazelnuts have a better name. but there are two variants of almonds, which is a nice plus. i don't eat chocolate, and eating blanched almonds reminds me of white chocolate. i like how they're slightly soft, & you can break one into two with your hand. it gives them a little of a pistachio rhythm. I feel like the are more uses for almonds, in cooking, as well as them being more delicious in general. almonds.

blossom smulch (schlump), Monday, 23 April 2012 10:26 (thirteen years ago)

I started pronouncing them al-monds rather than Armonds, maybe a year or two ago, I can't walk it back

blossom smulch (schlump), Monday, 23 April 2012 10:26 (thirteen years ago)

My new breakfast:

1 pkg unflavored instant oatmeal
1 handful almonds
1/2 sliced banana
1/2 cup milk
1 tiny drizzle honey
microwave all together for like 1-1.5 mins
add another splash of milk

rrrobyn is the high priestess of truth here. Pecans can also get fucked.

Hazelnuts win, even though I eat more almonds. That's only bc almonds are more readily available. Hazelnuts are special, and have a drier, more brittle crunch, which is totally to be preferred.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

I can't believe the ire vented against walnuts here! If there is one inferior nut, then that nut is definitely the peanut.

Friends of Mr Caeiro (NickB), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)

I mean I also like peanuts but think they're just kind of boring.

We should hang out and eat mixed nuts some time.

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

^ yeah, no kidding

peanuts are great! only seem boring due to ubiquity. great flavor, essential in all sorts of cooking.

brazil nuts are just the worst. terrible texture, no flavor, the worst. even the lowly walnut shines in comparison. (and, yeah, i agree that walnuts are great in salads, okay in cookies & quickbreads.)

yuppie bullshit chocolate blogbait (contenderizer), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

You guys are all weirdos. Brazil nuts own. I will gladly share mixed nuts with you any day.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 23 April 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago)

Brazil nuts in the shell are a very tough nut to crack. I can never get them out whole. Maybe if I were a toucan it would be easier. As far as flavor and texture go, I find them a bit bland and very slightly fiberous compared to other nuts, but they are still a pleasurable nut to eat.

Aimless, Monday, 23 April 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know that I've ever seen them in the shell. I like their texture - they remind me of macadamia nuts.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 23 April 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

To be honest I can't think of a single nut that I don't like.

The only time I've disliked the taste is if they're stale or oversalted.
