the other week, I saw someone riding a motorbike lying face down with their legs stretched out behind them. They were going very fast.

I love motorbikes. I went on my grandpa's when I was 5 and I think that was the last time (silly mopeds in Spain don't count, bah).

During wedding season here in Addis you can go hire guys dressed in national outfits to escort the wedding motorcade while doing handstands on the bike, and various other balancing/acrobatic acts. I always want to yell out "put on a helmet for fuck's sake'

H (Heruy), Friday, 13 September 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

If all your friends could see you now we'd be so etc etc [Mark is there really an LP called the Lonely Spy: your reference to it is the only mention thereof in the whole world (or at least on google which si the same thing]

I have never been on a motorbike. At least not one that was moving, or that didn't cost 10p a go outside what laughably passed for a supermarket in Honiton in the '70s.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 13 September 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

LP info found on interweb tim (i seem to recall i had to hunt around a bit to find it: i was trying to find lori's name possibly)

for the FIRST time? TELL ME you are a young boy strapped in an old(ER) body???? I was uh about 15 years old.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been thinking about buying a bike recently to get to work. All the bloody gear costs nearly as much as a bike though.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

well yes i am nath, but more to the point i don't think i have known many ppl who had bikes; oddly enuff sistrah becky told a year or so back that it wd be supercool if i got one (someone in my block had parked theirs outside and she wz admiring it and wondering how she wd evah get a ride on one, i think)

(she has been on dr vick's also: apparently she is a dangerous fidget)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been on a motorbike, or a moped.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The only time I ever piloted one myself I drove straight into a tree within seconds and hurt my arm very badly.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

[mark now I'm convinced you misread... loads of references to a single called The Lonely Spy but none to an LP]

Tim (Tim), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I've sat on my brothers, but even he wasn't allowed to ride it at the time (and I wasn't allowed to sit on it).

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, H is back! Hopefully for a bit longer this time.

Ha - one and only trip in 1978 - Exhilerating/terrifying.
mark were you told about correct protocol/behaviour, or just left to flap about wildly and not know whether to (lean/not lean) (left/right)when cornering, like I was?
I wasn't allowed to HOLD ON because the driver only wanted gurlies arms around his waist, so I was like one of those bucking bronco cowboys you see on TV.

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 13 September 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

after the meal the protocol was (*strained weak wail*) "you're holding on too tight my tummy is now full of delicious juicy squid dumplings remember", and as i was wearing friction-free vietnamese peasant-style rubber flipflops i had to work out a pommel=pony thing w.my knees, but the leaning stuff just kinda happened

mark s (mark s), Friday, 13 September 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh reminds me of that 50mph ride through rush hour Bangkok on a 125 with my full rucksack on, both the most scary and most exciting thing evah!

chris (chris), Friday, 13 September 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

My first time ever in America: I got to Brooklyn late on a Friday. My very handsome host took me on a ride into Manhattan on his Harley - we crossed onto the island at about midnight. It seemed to me a near-perfect way to see Manhattan for the first time.
