gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 September 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Well done. Were you drawn to see the tallest thinnest lamp post in North London?

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

what is a fruit machine?

Aaron A., Friday, 13 September 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

went here last night, all the bars were really empty (i forgot how lifeless it can be round there in the week! but this wasn't too bad. should have stuck to essex road as usual instead i think!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron, the fruit machine is a machine which sells fruit, usually found next to a cigarette machine in a pub, for those of us who prefer healthier choices. The fruit is generally expensive though: 50p for an apple!

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

ARGH! NO! Don't you dare! That's my freaking local, don't you DARE start hanging out there!

(Though last night I was actually across the road at Mother dancing to crap 80s choons. Is there any DJ at Mother who does NOT end their set with I Love Rock N Roll?)

kate, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

hee hee! everyone drinks in there don't they, its like the lock tavern or the bloody embassy bar!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the Brownswood - it stinks there (still have they finally removed the scaffolding). I prefer the White House down the road.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i did kind of like the brownswood, its my old stomping ground and stuff, and i do have a soft spot for pubs like this. its very bright though, i think we were the only 20somethings in the place

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

haha! although you could probably say the same about the red lion!!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, the Brownswood. Used to be my local, you know. Only went in about three times.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

last night i went here for the first time. it was bright in there

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

There's no way the Spanish Galleon deserves a three-pint rating. I'm very glad that site exists but it never ceases to amaze me.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...

it is a bit poncey and square for me

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It used to be the dog and partridge and was a shithole, a dive. Lock-ins and fights. I never went in but you could see the results all around.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

damn yuppies in brown gentrifying the neighborhood

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Corner of Southgate Rd and Northchurch Rd, N1

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I drank here last night:

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pubpics/pic430.jpg

It reminded me how much I hate West London.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Its expensive and full of twats but the food is meant to be good. (that's kind of notting hill in a nutshell)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

its also the O Neills in Harrow, the O'Neills in Watford, the O'Neills in Hounslow etc. etc.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually that O'Neills has tables and chairs outside which is quite a rare thing i notice (for them anyway)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pubpics/pic1338.jpg

This is my local. It's great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

We should have a FAP here:

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my local. S'OK.

Sam (chirombo), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Sam that would be a much more convenient site for a FAP than Jel's suggestion.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

FAPs should be held here:

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pubpics/pic1340.jpg

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ealing is beautiful, apart from the chewing gum streets.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed's suggestion = allbar one in all bar name (and cycle couriers)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

jel an FAP in Chiswick would suit me pretty good - maybe in a few weeks?

i dont like Ealing really, but maybe thats cos i was working in grim West Ealing for most of the last year or so

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you cant really see it but i went here quite a bit - Drayton Arms

http://www.ealing-web.com/pubs/drayton.jpg

huge beer garden, too near the Paddington main line tho - bit noisy at times

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i dunno why the photo comes up so big like that - its only 233x175 really

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I must defend the Duke. They pour a good guiness, they have a cheap whisky, its not too pricey for central london, they have limited ales but what they do have are well kept, and the food is reasnobly priced, good and thai and the couriers keep the media scum away/people who work for Ben Sherman.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

All these pictures of pubs is making me so exciting to visit this summer!

I spent half my life here it seems...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Ed, I just didn't like it. It had no character and it was all bleached wood. The beer was ok though I'll give it that

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

fap chiswick!
where abouts in west ealing, steve?

on the Broadway, opposite Dean Gardens and where Northfield Avenue starts - too close to Hanwell for my liking ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

F@ck!- that's a picture of the Drayton COURT, not Drayton Arms, in West Ealing. Right next to West Ealing station. I used to live round the corner in Argyle Road and that was my local for about 3 yrs (1986-9) - it's Fuller's, but quite the worst Fullers pub I've been in. There's a masonic meeting room above the pub.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Frog and Forget Me Not = BEST PUB IN CLAPHAM.

Actually, scratch that, only good pub in Clapham that I know of. Big sofas + pub quiz + bar billiards = pub perfection. I've been to that Paddington pub as well, but it's only really good in the summer.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

why is Thai food so popular in so many pubs btw? i've never worked that out

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

that bowling alley looks more exciting to me aaron ;)

This is what's attached to it...

So many nights at this shithole! Oh Detroit, you're everything they say you are!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bar billiards? In Clarm?

*adds to mentalist database*

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair its is fairly souless, fridays excepted, and it is miles better than any other pub in the vicinty. The next nearest good pub in the area is The Duke (of York) on doughty mews.

I don't know but appently the Red Duke, above, was one of the first. I think some pub discovered that you could get a thai family installed in the pub flat and get them to turn out good food very cheaply, much better and cheaper than your average pub food. It does vary tremendously and a lot of pubs now have the same sort of insta food they had as before just its thai.

The Duke's thai is pretty good and is about a fiver for a plate of good curry and rice or noodles which is pretty good value for the area.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Apple tree round there Ed, but I don't think you'd like it too much.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I always find the environs of Hatton Garden a happy hunting ground for pubs.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not? Do they not keep their beer well?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This weekend The Pinefox had some beer and some fish and chips here. As we sat there we thought "Hopkins would approve".

One does not approve of eating or drinking outdoors, obv.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very nmuch a boozer Ed, the beer is pretty good although it's been a bit strange a few times, but the landlady is good, and if you take a pint back will always check it out and do summat about it. The 80 shilling in there is a cracker.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I shall give it a try. Its down on mount pleasant, no?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

It is indeed, can't miss it, it's full of posties.

Not the hippest place, but nearby the homestead and formerly the spot where Jackson Pollack used to start fist-fights! Huzzah!
