That bear actually made The Today Show and I saw a segment about him. It wasn't a one off thing, he lives on a farm or something somewhere and learned to wave from all the people who would wave at him. People go there now specifically to get a wave from him.

Tourist Mauled After Rolling Down Window For Bear Selfie

A Scottish tourist is thankful to be alive after a close encounter with a wild bear sent her to the emergency room.

Moira Gallacher, 72, had been vacationing in Romania with her friend Charmian Widdowson when the women decided to go for a drive through the Carpathian Mountains.

During the outing, the women came across a couple of brown bears and did their best to get a photo of the wildlife.

“What happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side, and no problem. It let us take a picture and went away,” Gallacher said in a video shared by Scottish outlet STV News on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday, April 23. “But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back and it was at my side.”

“We saw these bears – a mummy bear, and a baby – they were gorgeous,” Widdowson said.
“But they weren’t gorgeous. The mummy bear was hungry, and thought my friend was going to be lunch,” she added.

Recounting the moments before the mauling, Widdowson said she parked her car to be able to get a better photo.

“I thought he wanted to be friends,” she said. “The bear came and wanted to get into the car, but he started getting into the car and bit my friend.”

DNA sequencing finally proved that, yes, giant pandas are bears. They were originally thought to be bears, then placed in the raccoon family (Procyonidae), then in a family of their own together with the red panda and are now considered bears again.
No zoologist ever considered they were rodents iirc although rhino-sized capybara-like rodents did exist in prehistory.

Ahh, okay... I thought raccoons were rodents but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore: 'Distantly related to cats and dogs, they share a common evolutionary ancestor with bears.'

There have been plenty of children’s stories about animals breaking out of zoos. But at one zoo in Northern California, a young black bear broke in.

That’s what happened last week at Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, Calif., when a zoo employee found a wild black bear standing with its nose pressed against the fencing of an enclosure, prompting a response by police and state authorities. It also left officials at California’s oldest zoo with a mystery about why a bear came in from the wild, introduced itself to the zoo’s bears and played with their toys, before being shown the exit.

I encountered a young black bear last month while out hiking in a more remote part of the state. It was raining. I came around a bend in the trail and it was walking toward me about 50 feet away with its nose near the ground snuffling up the rainy earth smells.

I was a bit surprised and said (verbatim) "Oh! Hello." It looked up, saw me, and in a split second it had plunged off the trail, down the hill and run away. So, this is more of 'I say hi to bear' story.
