That bear actually made The Today Show and I saw a segment about him. It wasn't a one off thing, he lives on a farm or something somewhere and learned to wave from all the people who would wave at him. People go there now specifically to get a wave from him.

Situation 2 - Bear has detected your presence, but is more than 100 m (350 ft) distant.
Your goal here is to act in such a way as to allow the bear to identify you, but to also let it know that you are no threat. Speak calmly so that it knows you are a human (their eyesight is quite poor). They will often quickly give ground to you once they identify you as human. If the situation permits, back away slowly, keeping a close eye on the bear. Otherwise, you may wish to detour around the bear, but in this case, detour upwind so that the bear can get your scent. Keep talking calmly. Waving your arms may help it identify you as a human.

Tourist Mauled After Rolling Down Window For Bear Selfie
A Scottish tourist is thankful to be alive after a close encounter with a wild bear sent her to the emergency room. Moira Gallacher, 72, had been vacationing in Romania with her friend Charmian Widdowson when the women decided to go for a drive through the Carpathian Mountains.During the outing, the women came across a couple of brown bears and did their best to get a photo of the wildlife. “What happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side, and no problem. It let us take a picture and went away,” Gallacher said in a video shared by Scottish outlet STV News on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday, April 23. “But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back and it was at my side.”...“We saw these bears – a mummy bear, and a baby – they were gorgeous,” Widdowson said. “But they weren’t gorgeous. The mummy bear was hungry, and thought my friend was going to be lunch,” she added.Recounting the moments before the mauling, Widdowson said she parked her car to be able to get a better photo. “I thought he wanted to be friends,” she said. “The bear came and wanted to get into the car, but he started getting into the car and bit my friend.”

let's think....brown, American black, Andean (aka spectacled), polar, sloth, sun, Asian black, giant panda
Are giant pandas actually bears? or massive rodents
― Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 13 June 2024 07:10 (one year ago)
DNA sequencing finally proved that, yes, giant pandas are bears. They were originally thought to be bears, then placed in the raccoon family (Procyonidae), then in a family of their own together with the red panda and are now considered bears again. No zoologist ever considered they were rodents iirc although rhino-sized capybara-like rodents did exist in prehistory.
― Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 13 June 2024 07:38 (one year ago)
Ahh, okay... I thought raccoons were rodents but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore: 'Distantly related to cats and dogs, they share a common evolutionary ancestor with bears.'

xxp it gets confusing because old phenotypic classifications (and reclassifications) were often made on guesswork based on physiology and locale, whereas you can now slap some panda dna in a sequencer and figure out that their genotype says "bear"

Similar incidents have occurred in recent years. In 2018, a man in Alaska was critically injured after his hunting partner shot a bear on a ridge. The animal tumbled down a slope into the man, who was also struck by rocks dislodged by the bear.Another man was injured in 2019 after his hunting partner shot a bear in a tree in North Carolina. The bear fell out of the tree and began biting the hunter. The man and the animal then tumbled off a cliff. The hunter was taken to a hospital, while the bear was later found dead.

Bears raid honey store after enclosure escape Two bears who sparked the evacuation of a wildlife park involving trained firearms staff and police had headed straight for the honey store, the park has said.

Bear breaks into California zoo to visit its brothers on lockdown
There have been plenty of children’s stories about animals breaking out of zoos. But at one zoo in Northern California, a young black bear broke in.That’s what happened last week at Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, Calif., when a zoo employee found a wild black bear standing with its nose pressed against the fencing of an enclosure, prompting a response by police and state authorities. It also left officials at California’s oldest zoo with a mystery about why a bear came in from the wild, introduced itself to the zoo’s bears and played with their toys, before being shown the exit.“Overall, he was a very polite visitor,” Christine Noel, a zoo supervisor, said in a statement. “He stayed on the boardwalk path, kept two feet on the ground and didn’t try to climb over the railings!”Ms. Noel was inspecting the zoo’s Redwood Sky Walk, an elevated path about 100-feet high that meanders among the state’s famous redwood trees on Friday morning when she spotted an unknown American black bear “interacting” with Tule, Ishŭng and Kunabulilh, the zoo’s own black bears, through their enclosure’s fencing....The bear did not come into contact with any human visitors. The intruder, about 1.5 years old and possibly a female, was going “nose-to-nose” with the other bears, one at a time, through the fencing of their habitats, in “polite introductions,” Jim Campbell-Spickler, the zoo’s director, said in an interview on Tuesday. It batted around their toys, he said. Then, with the help of a California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden, the bear was eventually coaxed through a service gate and back into the wilds of Sequoia Park.

I encountered a young black bear last month while out hiking in a more remote part of the state. It was raining. I came around a bend in the trail and it was walking toward me about 50 feet away with its nose near the ground snuffling up the rainy earth smells.
I was a bit surprised and said (verbatim) "Oh! Hello." It looked up, saw me, and in a split second it had plunged off the trail, down the hill and run away. So, this is more of 'I say hi to bear' story.
