Cassavetes - A Woman Under The Influence

I searched the archives and there's no thread on Cassevetes yet. So I decided to solve that. :-) I saw A Woman Under The Influence. I can't begin to describe how moved I was by the story. It's about feminism, about suburbia, about disintegration (of family, ego,...), about relationships,... I have been thinking about it for days now. In Barthes lingo: this contained ultra-punctum.

Killing of A Chinese Bookie is also GREAT but A Woman Under The Influence was so much more intense. Gena Rowlands is just amazing in it. I also noticed that Nick C was in it! I wonder if the house was John and Gena's house.

Yes JC is grate - haven't seen that many of his pics - they seem to be really hard to view in this country - but I love all the colour ones that I've watched - real 'Golden Age of Seventies American Cinema' stuff. - There's an excellent 'JC on JC' bk published by Faber, full of long, rambling quotes from hundreds of interviews given by JC over the years - contradictory, annoying, bombastic, but really human and surprisingly funny/mad/inspired stuff.

I made a Cassavetes thread a couple months ago, but it seems to be MIA.

I thought it was really fake.

Me too, I thought it was really fake. Nathalie, you're way more inspiring to me than Gena Rowlands. She's boring. Probably a nice person though.

Movies are ALWAYS fake. :-) The point is how much you are willing to buy into that, ignore it. I loved the intensity. I loved the improv acting. Maybe I love it because I expected sth different?

The improv acting was good, I agree. It's just the plot ... when I say 'fake' I guess I actually mean 'corny'. Supermodel goes mad ... Winona Ryder starring vehicle ...

peter falk is the real hero in this tale. but as for being moved by it... no.
