poll of Jeffrey Wright

This guy blows my mind he’s so good. His imdb page uses the phrase “intensity of his skill” twice, ha.

I threw in the theater stuff I could find, so Angels in America is on there twice. I dropped some v/o stuff.

Angels in America easily – he's hilarious and poignant and gets a lot of screen time.

He's never been bad though.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (TV - 1993) -- Sidney Bechet

^^ really curious about this!

Saw him first on Broadway as Nurse Belize, so that's gotta be it.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

i can't remember what ilx opinion of basquiat is, so run the risk of being considered gauche for going there, but basquiat, in which i saw him first & in which he's so innocent and hazy. shuffling around in his pajamas. he is one of my favs. angels is a sensible choice; what's he like in W?

blossom smulch (schlump), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

i saw him in basquat first too (to my knowledge) but idk what my vote is yet

peoples hernandez is such a crazed and detailed role but it's not a good enough movie

goole, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

My gf thinks he's one of the best ever American actors; great performances, broad range, etc...

Voted AiA(TV), but he's been good in everything I've ever seen him in and I would love to see him on stage.

Love Max Ophüls of us all (Michael White), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

house easy

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 17:22 (thirteen years ago)

Same problem with Basquiat as schlump: liked it at the time, just don't remember much now. I watched Angels in America much more recently, so that. He did okay in W, though I don't think he actually reminded me of Colin Powell much. He's pretty florid in Shaft.

clemenza, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

tempted to vote Basquiat even though i only saw it the one time a million years ago. it was the first time i saw him in anything and i was awed. but i haven't seen him in much since then--only W. and Angels the miniseries. i guess he was fine in both but yeah, he's not very colin powell-y in W and for some reason i thought he was only okay in Angels.

it's sort of a disappointing career so far, in the sense that a lot of these movies maybe haven't given him enough to do. wish i could have seen some of the plays.

He was fine in Basquiat; the movie was the hip thing to see in fall '96. Ah, youth.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 May 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

i used to watch basquiat as my like easy (sorry) buddy movie kinda movie, just on a saturday morning when i wasn't doing anything. because the soundtrack was really great and it was so cut and glued and it was poppy and easy. his performance is v affecting though. him & benicio. jeffrey wright's soft eyes. & the weird mythical coda about the boy & the crown, i still think about it.

horseshoe otm, would love to see him on stage

blossom smulch (schlump), Thursday, 10 May 2012 09:35 (thirteen years ago)

he's undoubtedly done better, but I'm voting for Shaft cuz that's the first time I said "woah, who's that guy"

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

the answer probably is angels in america but i voted boycott, which can get a little 'tv movie' at times but his king is incredible, really brings the man to life and goes beyond any elements of mere impression to an extent i don't think i've ever seen before w/ a figure that iconic, more than denzel's malcolm x even i think. plus erik dellums as bayard rustin and reg e. cathey as e.d. nixon w/ clark johnson directing - david simon affiliations all over this thing! plus CCH POUNDER is in it. high recommendation.

balls, Thursday, 17 May 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

basquiat isn't great for sure but it has a pretty great soundtrack and it works as a smarter (maybe) and more fun midnight in paris, it's pleasures are similar - o man there's rene ricard! and there's mary boone! and uh there's julian schnabel!

balls, Thursday, 17 May 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

Warhol and Basquiat shopping for caviar is my favorite scene.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

I heard Cale's version of "Hallelujah" and PiL's "Public Image" for the first time thanks to its soundtrack, which was a cognoscenti-type purchase in the late nineties.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

i still haven't voted! super curious about "boycott" now. reg e cathey! CCH POUNDER!!

goole, Thursday, 17 May 2012 17:25 (thirteen years ago)

He poured his heart out along side Mos Def in Topdog/Underdog. One of my most memorable theater experiences.

Yes. Nobody embarrasses himself.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 18 May 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

Ethan Hawke's Hamlet is pretty good. Sam Shepard! Bill Murray!
Wright is BARELY in it though.

crab lifting a goat (weatheringdaleson), Friday, 18 May 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

well he is the gravedigger. is bill murray polonius? not sure i can picture him in any other role. i played polonius and claudius in high school (in tom stoppard's 15 minute hamlet).

balls, Friday, 18 May 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Bill is Polonius. They really did gut the graveyard scene. And Casey Affleck is Fortinbras and he appears only in a PICTURE ON A WALL haha.

crab lifting a goat (weatheringdaleson), Friday, 18 May 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

fortinbras is the whole point of the play wtf
