hurrying on the way to a tiresome meeting i was already late for, i heard someone bellowing "mark mark", and turned to see the GothFynder General emerging from an (Ethiopian?) cafe and charging across the Caledonian Road towards me!!

i very much wish i cd have ditched the AGM and joined him, so sorta "dud" in this case

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. I don't like hearing my name shouted and I don't like shouting in the street, in most cases.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 14 September 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Also dud is when people who have just met you keep saying your name because somewhere along the line they have read that people like to hear their name said, and that this will help them get you to do whatever they want you to do for them.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 14 September 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It's classic, except when it turns out not to be you they are after. My life would be happier if there were no other Martins in the world (um, I don't mean other Martins should be killed, necessarily, but that they should change their names). Even better is hearing your name in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, as I did once. I only turned my head when it came again much closer, and it was my pal Grant Morrison (a well known comic writer) - it's even better when it's very far from anywhere you might plausibly bump into a friend.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Except if it's Tim H, just now: Bristol Rovers are playing Exeter today, so we are deadly enemies until, ooh, the middle of next week or so.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the thing to say in that eventuality is (v.evenly and w/o displaying surprise at all): "Oh hi I thought I might find you here"

this has tremendous headfuck potential

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. People will speak when spoken to.

Brian Mowrey (Brian Mowrey), Saturday, 14 September 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

never happened to me but I'd imagine it would be classic.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 14 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It hapenned to me the other day, this 6 grade kids on a school bus to some book thing, i didnt realised it was with me but after i looked. As i had no glasses i still dont know who were those people. Feking classic

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 14 September 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

People never shout Graham. However in Charing Cross Road yesterday I was reminded the deep thick cockney thug accent translates "Oi Oi!" insto something that could also be "Graham".

Graham (graham), Saturday, 14 September 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If you shouted jel, it probably wouldn't register until I'd seemingly walked off in an anti-social fashion, and then 5 minutes later thought "jel! that's me!"...

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

(I wnt to be good friends with Grant Morrison if it will get me free X-Men books...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 14 September 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud, since most people in Birmingham city centre appear to think my name is Harry Potter.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 September 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to get, literally, boxfulls of free comics every week, but that was when I worked in the field - which was also when I was good friends with Grant (and several other British 'stars'). We didn't fall out or anything, but as with Alan Moore, Mark Millar and others, I haven't seen him in ages. The only person who works for Marvel or DC that I'm still friends with, really, is John McCrea, and that's partly because I was friends with his wife first. We've actually been on holiday together.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 September 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

People you've just met keep saying your name because they have terrible memories and are reminding themselves through physical repetition. Trust me.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 14 September 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin knows all sorts of people whose work I admire. Cool.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 14 September 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

If you were professionally involved in British comics, you could hardly avoid knowing a lot of the British writers and artists. In fact, Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Eddie Campbell and many others produced work for my comics or magazine. I gave Mark Millar his start in the business - I only wish I'd signed on as his agent, rather than as his editor. Still, it's particularly pleasing to be enjoying the Ultimates so much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 14 September 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of Mark Millar, is it just me or is his column at Comic Book Resources regarding Sept.11th (which can be found at http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/index.cgi?column=thecolumn&article=1422 ) total bollox? I mean, I like the guy's work and all, but sheesh...

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 14 September 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(v.distant voice: "what abt yr name shouted in the street, tho?")

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Tracer Hand, that's an interesting point. Do you really think that's why they do it, Tracer Hand? I don't have a very good memory for people's names either. But, Tracer Hand, I don't repeat a person's name like that. Maybe I'm just not motivated enough to try that hard to memorize their name. No wonder I'm so popular at work.

Great things are done when men and mountains meet/This is not done by shouting people's name in the street.

DeRayMi, Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe you don't have a good memory for names becz you don't repeat them many times when you first meet people?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:12 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't grant m write "kill yr boyfriend"? that's one of my fave books ever.

hearing yr name shouted in the street = pretty classic, though generally i am a million miles away and have to be shouted at lots which can be rather embarassing.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate it when someone uses the words "just in," because I always think they're talking about me. Even the word 'just' is enough.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 14 September 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Justyn, try to stay away from news radio.

DeRayMi, Sunday, 15 September 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

(Mark Millar seems to be saying that he cheerfully killed off people in superhero comics without worrying about the devastation, and post-9/11 he doesn't. That's okay and can be interesting, but the effects of the fighting on ordinary people have been addressed many times over the years - I can think of a Gerber example doing just that in the '70s. As for the comics about firefighters and police, whoopdedoo - let's not neglect commercial calculation here. I've not read any of those comics, so I don't know if there is great art involved, but that isn't why Marvel suddenly launched them.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 September 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hearing my name shouted in the street is definately classic. It never happened to me much until recently. There's a kid across the road who's also called Simeon, he's a naughty little tyke of about 4 and his brothers and Mum are always shouting at him for one reason or another. Makes me look up every time, also when it's his Mum I get a slight "Uh-Oh! What have I done now" feeling.
Other than that I've never met another Simeon, so if someone shouted my name it was probably me they were after.
