Foxes (1980) and other movies like that - praise and list them here

* young girls manage life basically alone-as-a-group as the adults in their lives continue to let them down in a predictable but well-done variety of ways
* jodie foster and cherie currie are two of those girls, one protects the other
* music by moroder, also features songs by angel, cher, janis ian, surely some others i'm forgetting
* dir by adrian lyne
* 1980
* donna summer's "on the radio" features heavily
* they get into ALL KINDS of trouble

Watch the first 5 min of this movie and tell me it's not pure heaven. It's like On the Edge, only all girls (and Scott Baio, the token cheesesteak).

I put Satisfaction in this category, for instance. IN SPITE of that awful Liam Neeson plotline.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:44 (thirteen years ago)

<3 Satisfaction. I've never seen Foxes!

wolf kabob (ENBB), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Did you watch the first 5 min up there?

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

If not, please do. It will make your day!

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

Real Q: Have the hipsters/tumblrors/youngs discovered this movie yet?

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

FOXES is great.

Michael Jones, Friday, 25 May 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 May 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

< 3000 views for part one, i'd say no?

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

Let me also say that Cherie Currie is totally incandescent in this movie.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

Little Darlings has a similar real girl vibe, but the virginity loss plotline kinda gets in the way of me really placing it next to Foxes. Where the Boys Are is kind of a precursor maybe? Most of it was totally fluffy, but there was only one SUPER hot girl (the rest were pretty normal), and things didn't turn out so great for her in the end. I dunno, please tell me more movies like this.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

On the other hand, I guess they did go to the beach in search of/hunting Yalies. It was a different time, I guess.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

'heavenly bodies' sorta fits, tho i wouldnt really praise it xcept for the soundtrack - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087399/

this too maybe, ive not seen it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Girls

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 May 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

the main prob w/ this thread is that there arent many films like foxes iirc

johnny crunch, Friday, 25 May 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

That's extremely unfortunate.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

Responsible for a lifetime crush on Jodie F. And here I am, now the same age as Sally Kellerman was playing JF's mom in Foxes.

Michael Jones, Friday, 25 May 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

Exactly, starring Sally Kellerman, as Jodie Foster's mom.

I think I saw Modern Girls a LOOOOONG time ago -- I always recognize Cynthia Gibb because she played Karen Carpenter in the tv biopic, which I loved as a kid.
i'll have to look those up.

i was kind of hoping that spring breakers would be a little bit like this but I realize that this is asking too much.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

Times Square, or do you need a gaggle of gals?

Odd Spice (Eazy), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

Ensemble cast preferred

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

If only The Facts of Life had been an R-rated movie.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Friday, 25 May 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

maybe "ladies and gentleman, the fabulous stains"?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I forgot about that one. I didn't like it as much as Foxes, but it was good.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

I've liked a lot of movies about young female friendship -- Heavenly Creatures, Ghost World, Career Girls -- but I don't know that I've seen many ensemble-based ones.

Would it be out of line to suggest...

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, Traveling Pants is too glossy.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

Crossroads also too glossy.

For me, at least.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

O yeah I forgot I saw that. Blue Crush, too, I assume.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

The First Wives Club...

Odd Spice (Eazy), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

xp - Yeah, those are too Friday Night Lights glossy even at their least glossy.
Over the Edge, River's Edge -- those have the right gritty dark vibe that I'm looking for.
I only included Satisfaction because Britta Phillips' character is such a charming fuckup that she basically rules that movie. Also grouchy dark Trini Alvarado.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

Firefox (1996) kind of close -- buncha girls, including dorks, drink the same bottle of whiskey for the entire movie in an abandoned house, led by their wild girl fox-in-charge, angelina jolie. based on Joyce Carol Oates story, iirc?

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Foxfire!

Still, that movie kinda sucked compared to the og Foxes.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

I had no idea about Britta Phillips' acting past! I met her once, backstage at a Belltower gig.

I believe Kr is a fan of Firefox the book -- don't remember if she's seen the movie, although she seems p. well-versed in the early cinematic career of Angelina Jolie, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

Hare Kinsey (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 25 May 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

I know you said you preferred an ensemble, but Times Square TOTALLY ticks these boxes (and rules).

Walter Galt, Friday, 25 May 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

saw Times Square recently, more charming than good, but also a total '79 Sleazetown time capsule.

never have gotten to Foxes.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Friday, 25 May 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

after listening to the director's commentary on the times square DVD, it sounds like it would've been a much more interesting film if he'd been given free reign. was headed in a much darker direction, but a lot of studio/producer interference occurred.

also kind of funny: they thought it was going to be the next saturday night fever!

The movie I rep for wherever I can. Especially great that 16-year-old Diane Lane uses the male lead -- a young Ray Winstone -- to get exactly what she wants and leaves him high and dry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8vyYH9UdJY

Brony! Broni! Broné! (Phil D.), Friday, 25 May 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Ray Winstone is a total hunka in that movie.

I'll check out Times Square.

EZ are you trolling me with that Grease picture? Cmon.

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, times square is a total gas for at least half of its runtime, great proto grrl power performance by robin johnson

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 25 May 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

this too maybe, ive not seen it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Girls

It's worth checking out... It another "wacky things happen in one night" movie and just b-movie enough to keep it fun. Worth it alone just to see all the shots of LA in the mid-80s.

H.P. Hovercraft and the Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 25 May 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

This Angel song from the soundtrack is a solid rock/disco jam

game of crones (La Lechera), Friday, 25 May 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

HBO used to show "Old Enough" a lot in the mid-late 80s. Don't remember a lot about it except that it affected me. Could be terrible!

andrew m., Friday, 25 May 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

EZ are you trolling me with that Grease picture? Cmon.

Nono, was only suggesting that one-third of Grease fits this category.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Friday, 25 May 2012 20:04 (thirteen years ago)

Does Fast Times sort of fit?

* young girls manage life basically alone-as-a-group as the adults in their lives continue to let them down in a predictable but well-done variety of ways

For half the film, yes--the adults are completely absent. For the other half, boys manage.

clemenza, Friday, 25 May 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

Recommending this to my wife right now as she is a hard core fan of both Times Square and Facts of Life.

Moodles, Friday, 25 May 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

foxes is great, haven't seen or even thought about it in forever though. times square does seem like a decent comparison point. shame that there aren't more films in this vein. switchblade sisters too campy & trashy, the runaways too slick.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Friday, 25 May 2012 23:02 (thirteen years ago)

The Runaways?

buzza, Saturday, 26 May 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

This is the closest I could think of:

The Dozens

It's depressing that I can't think of more. I can think of tons of duos and tons featuring older gals in quasi-feminist groups/utopias but none that really fit your criteria.

Oh yeah you might also dig Dennis Hopper's 1980 Out of the Blue but again, not about a group of gals. Full movie's on IMDb. Pretty grim, though.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 26 May 2012 05:52 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, hey, Eric Rohmer's Le Rayon Vert (Summer).

Odd Spice (Eazy), Saturday, 26 May 2012 06:13 (thirteen years ago)

'out of the blue' is awesome, yeah, but more bleak than most of these.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 26 May 2012 06:27 (thirteen years ago)

More 80s French stuff:

Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (Rohmer)
L'effrontée (early Charlotte Gainsbourg)

Hare Kinsey (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 26 May 2012 07:28 (thirteen years ago)

also kind of funny: they thought it was going to be the next saturday night fever!

I can see this tbh

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Saturday, 26 May 2012 08:02 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I loooooved Out of the Blue when I saw it, but it has been a loooong time. I'll look for The Dozens.

I never looked at the imdb page for Foxes but apparently the nerd girl's name is Madge Axman, the only one with a surname.

game of crones (La Lechera), Saturday, 26 May 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

I just typed the longest post and my iphone ate it. ack!

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Saturday, 26 May 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

well, there are tons of Rohmer films about women hanging out, but usu two at a time.

World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 26 May 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe you should just listen to Fannypack: So Stlyistic and make like you're watching a movie.

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 26 May 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

two months pass...

I finally remember to watch it and Times Square is nowhere to be found. Not on Netflix, dvd is apparently rare and hard to find if amazon results are any indication?

I'm in desperate need of a pickmeup and I thought this movie would be it, but I guess not ;_;

Philip Nunez, Monday, 20 August 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago)

I think when I saw Foxes I was expecting something a bit wilder/more rebellious but really the plot boils down to wannabe-lesbian-den-mother Jodie Foster's repeated efforts to domesticate Cherie Curie iirc. it's an interesting and pretty unique movie but I remember it being kind of static, dramatically.

Shameful Dead Half Choogle (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 20 August 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago)

the relationship between those two seems pretty uncommon though, no? also the other girls weren't as one-dimensional as the Other Friends usually are.

jodie foster's dad is a real piece of work too, and loretta swit as her mom? it's not like so much happens, but all of the characters are interesting. i guess that's enough for me.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 20 August 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago)

Wrong "Hot Lips"--Sally Kellerman waas Jodie's mom.

Billie Jean's aided and abetted by guys all along the line iirc

Maybe Bandits?
"Four female cons who have formed a band in prison get a chance to play at a police ball outside the walls. They take the chance to escape. Being on the run from the law they even make it to sell their music and become famous outlaws."
I saw it...but I don't really remember it.
