Let me also say that Cherie Currie is totally incandescent in this movie.

Little Darlings has a similar real girl vibe, but the virginity loss plotline kinda gets in the way of me really placing it next to Foxes. Where the Boys Are is kind of a precursor maybe? Most of it was totally fluffy, but there was only one SUPER hot girl (the rest were pretty normal), and things didn't turn out so great for her in the end. I dunno, please tell me more movies like this.

On the other hand, I guess they did go to the beach in search of/hunting Yalies. It was a different time, I guess.

I think I saw Modern Girls a LOOOOONG time ago -- I always recognize Cynthia Gibb because she played Karen Carpenter in the tv biopic, which I loved as a kid.

Yeah, I forgot about that one. I didn't like it as much as Foxes, but it was good.

I've liked a lot of movies about young female friendship -- Heavenly Creatures, Ghost World, Career Girls -- but I don't know that I've seen many ensemble-based ones.

Over the Edge, River's Edge -- those have the right gritty dark vibe that I'm looking for.
I only included Satisfaction because Britta Phillips' character is such a charming fuckup that she basically rules that movie. Also grouchy dark Trini Alvarado.

Firefox (1996) kind of close -- buncha girls, including dorks, drink the same bottle of whiskey for the entire movie in an abandoned house, led by their wild girl fox-in-charge, angelina jolie. based on Joyce Carol Oates story, iirc?

I believe Kr is a fan of Firefox the book -- don't remember if she's seen the movie, although she seems p. well-versed in the early cinematic career of Angelina Jolie, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I know you said you preferred an ensemble, but Times Square TOTALLY ticks these boxes (and rules).

saw Times Square recently, more charming than good, but also a total '79 Sleazetown time capsule.

never have gotten to Foxes.

after listening to the director's commentary on the times square DVD, it sounds like it would've been a much more interesting film if he'd been given free reign. was headed in a much darker direction, but a lot of studio/producer interference occurred.

It's worth checking out... It another "wacky things happen in one night" movie and just b-movie enough to keep it fun. Worth it alone just to see all the shots of LA in the mid-80s.

For half the film, yes--the adults are completely absent. For the other half, boys manage.

Recommending this to my wife right now as she is a hard core fan of both Times Square and Facts of Life.

foxes is great, haven't seen or even thought about it in forever though. times square does seem like a decent comparison point. shame that there aren't more films in this vein. switchblade sisters too campy & trashy, the runaways too slick.

It's depressing that I can't think of more. I can think of tons of duos and tons featuring older gals in quasi-feminist groups/utopias but none that really fit your criteria.

Oh yeah you might also dig Dennis Hopper's 1980 Out of the Blue but again, not about a group of gals. Full movie's on IMDb. Pretty grim, though.

'out of the blue' is awesome, yeah, but more bleak than most of these.

I think when I saw Foxes I was expecting something a bit wilder/more rebellious but really the plot boils down to wannabe-lesbian-den-mother Jodie Foster's repeated efforts to domesticate Cherie Curie iirc. it's an interesting and pretty unique movie but I remember it being kind of static, dramatically.

the relationship between those two seems pretty uncommon though, no? also the other girls weren't as one-dimensional as the Other Friends usually are.

jodie foster's dad is a real piece of work too, and loretta swit as her mom? it's not like so much happens, but all of the characters are interesting. i guess that's enough for me.
