I'm fairly sure the right answer here is All the Colours of the Dark, but as I haven't actually seen it yet then I'll have to vote for The Shout.

Demons including all the ones i haven't seen

korea opportunities (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

He Who Gets Slapped is pretty amazing, though I would've put forward The Unknown as the creepier of his circus films. Fond memories of Night Of The Lepus as an Incredibly Strange Film Festival staple; Visitor Q is up there, too.

I can't decide whether to be stubborn and vote for my representative on this list (2012 Woman in Black), or give it up for Night of the Lepus. Or Shock Waves for pioneering Nazi zombies.

Even if the movie itself isn't Romero's best (I guess I can give that up), Season of the Witch is an aesthetic masterpiece of its time imo. Not only is groovy and swingin, it's grim and stark too. The look of it is so familiar to me and reminds me of being a child in the industrial midwest in the late 70s. That's what stuff looked like, what people looked like. So simple, and so totally creepy -- just watch the first 2 min. It only takes 2 min to get creepy in Pittsburgh in the 70s when you are George Romero and you have a camera.

SEASON OF THE WITCH! Vote for me!

"This New York-set thriller operates on mood and atmosphere and moves so fast, with such delicate changes of rhythm, that its excitement has a subterranean sexiness...a few shocking fast cuts, but it also has scabrous elegance and a surprising amount of humor." (xpost)

clemenza, Thursday, 31 May 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

Horror of Dracula is the 1st Hammer Dracula right? If so, that. In fact I would have thrown it at least 15 points in the poll but couldn't remember the US Title and was in great haste.

but he go's to a resturang and then die in a toilet (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 31 May 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)

I do like the NYC vibe of Laura Mars, but I love seeing '70s NYC in pretty much any movie. It's not a great film or anything (wasn't on my ballot), but it's fun and even though you know early on exactly how it's going to eventually use its main gimmick, it's still effective when it happens.

It's probably good that I don't have an office because if I did, I would shut the door and watch Anguish instead of working.

carl agatha, Thursday, 31 May 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

Two of my picks on here (The Finishing Line and Quatermass & The Pit), I'll go for Fearless Vampire Killers though. Surprised more people don't rate it, there's a strange eerie feel to it although some of that could just be the foreknowledge of what happened to Sharon Tate irl.

A++++++ would deal with again (Matt #2), Thursday, 31 May 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

I like Fearless Vampire Killers, but I don't love it. And it's one of those comedies that, while they use horror tropes, are very much still comedies to me, and I wouldn't count them in the horror pantheon (maybe horror-comedies rather than comedy-horrors?). Obviously the distinction is personal, but I just couldn't see myself voting for it in a horror poll.

emil.y, Thursday, 31 May 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

aw djp you should totally watch alien, i think you would dig it actually. aliens as well, but thats for when you feel more action frenzy than horror bound

I want L'interieur chicken, not Hausu chicken (jjjusten), Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

I was totally in the mood for Alien the night I tried to watch it, but I started it at 3 AM and kind of passed out about 15 minutes in (ah, college)

Since then, I've heard/read so much about the plot and seen so many scenes that I sort of feel like I've already seen it (even though I haven't).

that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

i just watched alien with my horror disliking wife, and beforehand i did the dutiful hey you dont need to watch this if its going to freak you out and she responded with duh i dont live on a spaceship why would it freak me out, which was a fair point i think.

xpost see alien is def one where the summaries arent going to measure up to seeing it, the look of the movie is so incredible that even a dude like me who has seen it a billion times and knows every twist and the timing of everything still finds it totally riveting.

Björk lied (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

i like a ton of these, but calvaire, quartermass and the pit, horror of dracula, lifeforce, marebito, the howling, the trial and visitor q are all excellent. a few i excluded due to non-horror-ness, others i cut thoughtlessly or with regret. picking visitor q just for the sick lols. "this isn't a miracle of nature, it's shit!"

that said, there are a bunch here that i feel sheepish abt never having seen, especially all the colours of the dark, five dolls for an august moon, season of the witch, the shout and virgin spring

Voted for the Fearless Vampire Killers cause after all, I'm the one responsible for its inclusion.

Would definitely not get into a heated argument if it fits accordingly everyone's conventional borders for a proper horror film but I have fond childhood memories of scaring me real good back then in some scenes, and I love it still.
Beautiful scenery, flawless atmosphere and awesome soundtrack from Kristofer Komeda.

And I really, really need to see Calvaire, Marebito and The Shout finally.
