Alien franchise directors vs. Mission: Impossible franchise directors

It occurred to me the other day that both series feature pretty eclectic sets of directors, many of whom command cult status on their own. Which set commands more respect?

Alien, by far.

de palma > bird > fincher > cameron > woo > scott > abrams > jeunet - not sure how that works out but since alien work actually does represent some of the best work scott and cameron did and i can't really say that about m:i w/ de palma and definitely not woo (quite the opposite) i'll go w/ alien series.

i think the deciding factor here is sigourney weaver >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> tom cruise

The best of these directors is obv De Palma and the worst is pretty obv Jenuet. The middle clouds the issue.

are we voting on the directors as a whole or just their work on these franchises

Jeunet worse than Abrams?

Just watched tom cruise sending secret communications through bible groups on usenet and now I'm wondering if I'm the only one on here actually posting about modern rock hits of 1999 and everyone else is a buncha spooks from Langley.

There is no conceivable universe where De Palma > Jeunet!

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 11:55 (twelve years ago) link

i can conceive of that universe, and live in it

Carrie vs er, Amelie.

I'm sure we can all agree on S. Weaver.

Jeunet is non-stop terrible.

No, I'm pretty certain that is DePalma you're thinking of there.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 12:37 (twelve years ago) link

I can see where you might be confused, as De Palma is even at his worst a master of his medium and Jenuet abuses post-production to vomit all over everything in sight.

(I'll grant you, Untouchables is probably De Palma's second or third worst movie.)

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

The Untouchables is aces compared to the likes of The Black Dahlia, Snake Eyes or Bonfire of the Vanities tho.

➂ ➌ ➂ (Pillbox), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

All those movies have good things in them. Only Redacted and maybe Wise Guys (too scared to watch it) couple possibly be worse.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 14:42 (twelve years ago) link

Man, you guys like shit films. Are those of you saying that Jeunet is the worst *really* trying to claim that the awesome Delicatessen and City of Lost Children are worse than FUCKING TITANIC OR TWATTING FACE/OFF???

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

Yes.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

Delicatessen is ok, City of Lost Children is Jeunet's best - you couldn't pay me to re-watch his other films tho.

De Palma, by contrast, has a long-storied career with hacky shit on his resume but also some all-time great amazing stuff like Carrie and fucking Scarface. so duh.

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

ergo anyone saying Jeunet is better than De Palma is insane imho

Dressed to Kill! Phantom of the Paradise!

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

Jeunet is corny and embarrassing for real. De Palma at front and Jeuent at back is spot on.

circa1916, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

I would put Jeunet ahead of Cameron but that's just me and I know no one will agree. just really hate his style.

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:19 (twelve years ago) link

I'd accept an argument for De Palma, though I think he's way overrated, but the rest of them? Uggggggh. I don't see how you get much cornier and more embarrassing (and badly acted and shittily written) than Titanic.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

Went through Aliens, T1, and T2 over the past few months. Guy does (or did) action at a level above just about anyone. He seems pretty hate-able and he hasn't made anything great in 20 years, but respect where it's due.

circa1916, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

i was gonna spin some theory about how the alien directors did their best work in those films and the MI ones did their worst, but that the latter are a superior group, but it's not really true and who cares anyway

brony ver (s1ocki), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

my problem is I like half of each quartet of directors, but apart from Alien I don't think any of the films are anybody's best work

Are those of you saying that Jeunet is the worst *really* trying to claim that the awesome Delicatessen and City of Lost Children are worse than FUCKING TITANIC OR TWATTING FACE/OFF???

Face/Off was on last night - the whole Nicolas Cage 'cult' thing is hugely tiring but caught some of Face/Off again last night and its p/good really.

i rewatched it again recently and found it pretty tiresome, to be honest.

Will say that MI is his weakest film, but that's just a measure of his overall quality, rather than a criticism.
