i feel like I like long cool evenings and drinking outside and pool parties and camping, and am excited in general but some of the general sweating and ughness is never fun for me

bikes, bbqs, music, friends, good strangers, beer, warm nights, chance meetings, going with the flow, leaving early, staying late, looking at the sky
i am ready for more summer!

all of the above except "leaving early"

For me it's going to be working in 100+ where even the breeze is warm, no shade and lots of dust! West Texas! And the AC just died in my jeep. On the bright side, at the grocery store you can practically buy every part of a cow or pig, and I'll be employed again.

it is year-long summer where i live, you best believe i crave a good cold winter. generally speaking, summer is really not a season i enjoy, since as soon as the sun shows up i get sunburned. i do like the evenings though, late dinners/drinks with friends.

I always think 'hey, summer, summer is Good, it'll be fun' and then it never is and I'm always disappointed.

However, this summer I am spending most of August in Canada. I have pretty high hopes for it: warm August nights, backyard barbecues, road trips, weddings, mountains, seeing my friends, petting my dog a lot. YESSSS

Summer kind of sucks. The kids are out of school, getting dumber and getting in the way. It's hot. Pool is nice but too crowded. heat makes me tired and too uncomfortable to cook.
And then there's the sweat.

But, it's fun to grill and drink.

Apparently some non-American ilxors are cranky because their summer has not yet arrived in full force, leaving skies drippy and overcast, and temperatures cool. In western Oregon I never expect anything different than that until Bastille Day, the Official Start of Oregon's Summer.

Aimless, Saturday, 16 June 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

JacobSanders, Saturday, 16 June 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link

I definitely like summer, if I have a chance to get outdoors a lot. It is the best season for getting into the high mountains around here, which I love to do. I should manage to get out a fair bit this summer, so I am feeling optimistic about that. In fact, my wife and I are currently in deep discussions about whether I may be able to retire officially now. Please do not hate me.

*tera, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

I left NC because of the rednecks. But I miss the longer summers.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

I left NC bc of rednecks and general sucking including the bad, long summers. Summer is pretty bad in Chicago but at least it's short.

In winter I can get miserable sometimes, but once I'm indoors or on a bus or train, the discomfort passes within minutes. If it doesn't, I put on more clothes.

In summer OTOH, a few minutes outdoors takes literally hours to undo. And even when I finally cool off I'm clammy and pimply.

Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

If you're consistently cold, you can pick up a cheap space heater or electric blanket and very conveniently warm up. Heat is harder to beat. God, what I wouldn't do for cheap, portable AC.

At least at my last job in NC I could hide in the walk in cooler while it was slow. And take dust baths in the corn starch in dry storage.

Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

i just bought a handheld air conditioner that takes like 6 duracells or something

it's alright

also i think guys have a harder time with heat, honestly this is like a thing i think

surm, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

An actual air conditioner? It's not just a fan??

The park by my work has its stupid misters on. What a waste of water and money. I was hoping that a couple of winters would put them out of commission, but they're still running. Even if they were effective in humid weather, the nozzles are at least 15 feet above an average adult's head and every drop of the mist gets blown away in the infamous Chicago wind.

Je55e, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

Hey, I felt that way this morning!

Honestly though, I have really enjoyed this (hot, miserable) summer more than any I can remember since childhood b/c I've gotten outdoors and done tons of stuff in it. Lots of swimming and laying and taking pictures on Lake Michigan (why did I not take advantage of our amazing beaches and waterfronts before???), cooking out, outdoor markets, and biking. I'm going to be disgustingly hot no matter what I do, and the difference between regular hot and doing-stuff hot is not so huge, and if I'm having fun, I'm spending a little less time hating summer.

Je55e, Thursday, 9 August 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago) link

But still, I'm looking forward to a good old fashioned fearsome blizzard, hopefully with thundersnow.

Je55e, Thursday, 9 August 2012 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

You said something like that last year, Je55e. I think you need to turn in your Summerhaas card and go hang out with the Summer Lovers.

Unfortunately, were still over 60% humidity today so while I do not feel like I am being cooked alive when I go outside, I am still a sweaty mess.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Thursday, 9 August 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

though i work in a cubicle, it's in a pretty cool building. there is a skylight above my head, and the summer months, the sun shines directly on me and my desk for several hours in the late morning.

this makes me hot and makes it nearly impossible to read my computer screen. so i have to move to some other desk for a few hours, which is annoying as fuc.

happily the arc of the sun is moving on and soon this will no longer be an issue.

mookieproof, Thursday, 9 August 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

I admit I would like summer more if I didn't have to put on makeup and work clothes and walk to the subway and wait on the platform blah blah every day. That's the sucky part. If it was all tank tops and suntans and eating popsicles at the beach I would not complain. Wait that's not true. Well, I would complain less.

if I didn't have to put on makeup and work clothes and walk to the subway and wait on the platform blah blah

God, yes. On mornings when I have to dry my face of sweat before I can put on the very minimal makeup I even bother with in the summer, I know it's going to be a bad day. Or when my eyebrow pencil gets sweat on it after I use it. SWEATY EYEBROWS. Bah.

*tera, Thursday, 9 August 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

Can someone answer a question about sweating please? When you bathe, does your skin absorb water that it swears out later? A friend who used to wear a lot of makeup (like on his face, neck, arms (lolgoth)) would sit in a hot place and sweat for a while after showering and before applying makeup bc he said he was getting rid of water from the shower. Is that BS?

I thought it was BS, but I sweat almost not at all, ever, and then last weekend, I showered and immediately went outside and I felt dripping on my foot and my head and arms were soaked and I wondered if the schvitzing goth was right.

Please help.

Je55e, Friday, 10 August 2012 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

That is bs, the post-shower sweating has to do with going from a humid/wet climate to a drier one or a temperature differential.
