this is the one thread question i force myself to ask every year around this time...

guilty pleasures are encouraged!

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

also you can answer more than once but try to think of 3 really good ones for each post

and usually someone answers and says "i havent seen any movies this year" so lets get that out of the way...

Always a fun time of year to ask this q.

The Turin Horse
Damsels in Distress

Because otherwise, The Grey.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

I have a log at home -- yes, ON PAPER -- so I'd have to go through that and weed out which "count" for this year. There've been a fair number of B+ releases.

Would have included This Is Not A Film, but I saw it last fall, even though its US release is '12. So that's it, I suppose.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

The Kid with a Bike
The Deep Blue Sea

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

also, no one should think of asking this question before Halloween.

This is the year where I'm going to miss a whole bunch of worthy releases. Cuz it's about time.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

Cuz it's about time.

should be your tagline

Can't wait to dismiss the latest Dardennes with a B+ (if that)

three months pass...

good time to bump IMO... there's been some good shit in the past 2-3 months.
don't be afraid to include bad comedies and absurd action movies. unless of course you hated them.

that the first two probably made some people's 2011 lists makes me feel out of the loop. & i can't remember what else i've seen in the six month window between the start of the year & the last week. but these are all keepers. i liked anatolia v well too.

I watched Killer Joe and Cosmopolis on Xmas eve after seeing them in this thread, and I thought it was weird that they had pretty much the same ending.

billstevejim, Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:36 (twelve years ago) link

That said, I have yet to really enjoy 3 movies from 2012. I was expecting to have a complete answer by now.

billstevejim, Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:37 (twelve years ago) link

so disappointed in Killer Joe. The last thirty minutes were so damn slow.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:49 (twelve years ago) link

I have much still to see; very provisionally, Knuckleball, Free Angela Davis & All Political Prisoners, and Paul Williams Still Alive.

I haven't seen much, but I'll say The Master, Magic Mike, and The Dust Bowl. Lincoln and Haywire runners up.

your damn bass clarinet (Eazy), Saturday, 29 December 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, im not generally into ken burns, but the dust bowl, esp the 1st half, was really good

johnny crunch, Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

i would add 'killing them softly' to the 3 i listed above, or knock out killer joe if im keeping it to 3

i guess honorable mentions for - django, cabin in the woods, the master - dont really care deeply abt these tho

johnny crunch, Saturday, 29 December 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks to everyone who repped for The Kid With A Bike. I totally glossed over that as one among the many Netflix Instant movies with awful/generic titles. Now I have reason to check it out.

Alien Lays (Old Lunch), Sunday, 30 December 2012 00:23 (twelve years ago) link

Le Quattro Volte is from a couple of years ago and I have re-watched it a few times this year and couldn't find a thread on it on here. It's such a rare type of film and I just thought it was worth mentioning on here.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 31 December 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

All of those were my initial rankings. I'd shift almost all of them down a tier upon reflection, but I don't want to give off the impression I loathe movies.

Five-Year Engagement, The (Nicholas Stoller)

Eric, this is almost certainly the funniest of the Apatow-produced films I've seen, at least in part bcz the two lead characters are maimed in separate incidents.
