Morrissey, the current tour, his Latino fanbase and why I love the man

Getting into a bit of a phase right about now, I am -- I picked up Peepholism, the collection of Smiths/Moz sleeves put together by Jo Slee back in 1994, while in NZ, and it turned out to be a very very good thing indeed (thanks to Damien for pointing it out to me!). My vacation meant I missed the current tour with Jaguares, but this report of last night's show makes me incredibly jealous (the setlist alone!). Meanwhile, one of my fave local writers -- Gustavo Arellano, writes for the OC Weekly -- did a great cover story last week on his popularity in Southern California and specifically among Latinos. The subject's been discussed before in other articles but this is the best yet (and he gets in some solid notes on the preconceptions other writers have brought to the subject).

Me, I just love the fact that the performer so often damned in America for being the supposed king of the pale young wimps by macho/cryptohomophobic writers has gained this new role, and the more so because he's just still being his usual self. It's a good way to see how cultural assumptions in general can be so readily trashed on the one hand and on the other hand reconnected in ways that can surprise some though not all. So yay as always for the man -- though apparently Moz still has problems letting the court case go...

i wrote about this at length, and hope to have it up on freaky trigger.

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Devious, truculent, unreliable.

"All reggae is vile."

Venga, Monday, 16 September 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose I'm in that camp of it making perfect sense to me, but not being entirely sure what "it" is.

I started on Morrissey while I was at a high school in southern Colorado that was about 40% Latino. Only later in life did I learn that not as many people as I thought were as taken with him as my social circle and I were. Oddly, though, I can only remember one Latino kid at that school who was into Morrissey, so I don't think that was in any way the source of it.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 September 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

All reggae is vile.

I could easily see this being an ILX post, actually -- and not a troll either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't meant to be a troll. I love the Smiths but am ambiguous about Morrissey as a human being (at least as he's been presented in the media), even when this band were at their peak.

Venga, Monday, 16 September 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Heavens, I wasn't saying *you* were trolling, I'm well aware of the quote! But I stand by my thought -- it just seems like the type of thing that could pop up as a straightforward line on the boards here, a thread title even. From the distance of history, the line itself out of context just seems like somebody who really can't stand the music in general -- hardly surprising from someone who loves and hates music as much as Morrissey does -- and god knows we've had enough ranges of musical opinion on the forum...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, you should start this thread in ILM as well.

dizonut, Monday, 16 September 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, did you catch Morrissey's inexplicable 2-nighter on the Craig Kilborn show? This was last week. I missed the first night, but caught the 2nd night's performance of "Every Day is Like Sunday" and was impressed by Moz's impassioned performance. Damn, he looked old, but he was totally *there*.

Aaron A., Monday, 16 September 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, let me know if Morrissey starts recording bachatas.

I ran into and introduced myself to Senor Morrissey at an excellent L.A. Margarita bar called El Carmen! Although it's hardly a Chicano hangout, the decor is strictly Mexican wrestlers and movie posters. Perhaps he was trying to empathize with his audience?

Actually, his popularity with Chicanos doesn't surprise me at all. KROQ really was very important to Angelenos and Orange County-ites (although it's now in the nu-metal doldrums), and everyone "cool" listened to it. It actually really struck me in '94 when I was visiting back from Berkeley and went to a New Order concert at the Bowl. Every box was different. Some guys from East LA were passing the joint to some Asian kids Torrance, while my mostly white Valley friends were debating the merits of "Temptation" versions with the same two groups. In fact I don't think that Morrissey is the Latino Anglo-phile limit. All my Latino friends like the Cure more.

oh my god Ned, you got a copy of peepholism?? do you know how hard it is to find one of those! i really regret not buying it when it came out, because it is virtually extinct. where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking?

sand.y, Monday, 16 September 2002 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my god Ned, you got a copy of peepholism?? do you know how hard it is to find one of those!

So I gather! I wasn't even aware of its existence until Damien showed me the copy in the used book store we were visiting. Another reason to go to NZ -- good bookstore finds! There was only the one copy, I'm afraid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got back from the show in Berkeley. It was wonderful--out doors, and when M. began it was daylight, you could see the bay in the background, then throughout the show the sky went pink then blue then finally it was pitch black... M. complained that the fog was messing up his voice, but his voice sounded amazing... never better... He was very campy which entertained my sister to no end... He came out faux limping and the vocal pyrotechnics were in full effect--much trilling of the r's and a new gutteral thing--new to me anyway--The songs before the show began included Nico and Elvis, then at the end of the show M. listed a list of figures to bless the audience, and one of them was "Nico blesses you". My sister and I have some ideas to stage manage his career-- 1) he should do a covers album like Bryan Ferry circa 70s (or present) as my sister says he has such a beautiful voice and if he's running a little dry on the material end why not? 2) he should team up with some young whipper-snapper to do some cross-polarization type thing...

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

if he's running a little dry on the material end why not?

Is he, though? He's debuted some five or six 'new' songs on the tour all told (new in that they've not been formally released but they've been known about for some time).

he should team up with some young whipper-snapper to do some cross-polarization type thing...

He would regard that as an affront to his dignity, I suspect. ;-) And besides, you can only do "Interlude" once. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

All pigfuck is vile. Duh.

Anyway, I thought Morrissey looked fantastic on the Craig Kilbourne show, sort of like Dirk Bogarde crossed with the Childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. That chin! It's enormous. As for the first night, you didn't miss much, Aaron. The interview was embarrassing--he seemed ill at ease and the questions were idiotic. And the new song he debuted, "The First of the Gang to Die" was a weak version of one of those sympathy-for-the-bad-boy numbers, this time set in the barrio. But really, he sang beautifully and I dig that aging fop look.

Mary, loved your little review, it's made me very pissed off at myself for missing the shows down here.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

And actually, I just realized that in the OC Weekly article I love how the one fellow entitled a thesis "My Only Mistake Is I’m Hoping" since that's a line from The Most Underrated Morrissey Song Ever "The Edges Are No Longer Parallel" (Alain Whyte's fave as well!). Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you read the interview in last week's Observer magazine.

After never wanting to see him play solo (having missed him in the Smiths and at Wolverhampton, I just thought ah fuck it when he started touring again circa Kill Uncle) I'm now really envious og my friends who are going to the Albert Hall.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

But N., that's what I linked to in the end of my initial post. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah - sorry. Wasn't obvious from the blue writing.

On a point of order, I distinctly remember JM saying how much he'd liked Last of the Famous International Playboys and had sent a note to that effect. But picking Morrissey up on such things is 'not the point', I have learned. Sometimes, he reminds me of Roy Keane.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

None of my Mexican neighbours like Morrissey. Is this phenomenon restricted to USA-based Mexicans? Is it just Mexicans? What about people from Ecuador? Our doorman greases his hair back Moz-style, but I think it's a coincidence.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

he should team up with some young whipper-snapper to do some cross-polarization type thing

Or some not-young whippersnapper: JARVIS.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Not if that Observer article quoted him right, m'friend. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome back to Ned, by the way... Re running a little dry on material--yes--he does have new material, but no, in my opinion it is not quite up to par...

Re the not-young Jarvis--thanks to one of the articles Ned was nice enough to post for us, M. can't even stand to listen to his music!

Does M. really think doing a cover is beneath him? Even at his concerts I guess he doesn't do covers(?) I think it would be fun! Especially since (I think this was in one of the articles Ned posted) when he was a young lad he bought all the 7 inches and played them in his room and sang along to the dismay of his neighbors...

I wish I saw the Craig Kilbourne show!!

Here's the San Francisco Chronicle review of the show I saw, with some commentary on the M/Jaguares phenomenom:

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi, Ned! So you're back? Just when I returned to Japan. I stumbled upon this thread looking for new answers to your travels-in-NZ thread.

Morrissey has done several covers live -- N.Y. Dolls' Trash, The Jam's That's Entertainment, T. Rex's Cosmic Dancer, Suede's My Insatiable One, Bowie's Drive-In Saturday, uh, am I forgetting any others?

Being an obsessive know it all when it comes to Morrissey, I really shouldn't talk on this thread because it'll only raise the blood pressure.

Elvis was not on the intermission music. I should know...I went to every blessed show on this tour prior to London and the intermission cd is the same. See, I told you I am an okia. But I can't even think what song remotely sounds like Elvis... Oh, maybe that Old Shep song. It was a song that Elvis covered, but the version on the intermission cd is not the Elvis version. However, Morrissey did dedicate There Is a Light to Elvis at several of the shows in mid-August.

I lurve the preview write-up in the L.A. Weakly which begins with "Morrissey and the Eskimos who love him" because it takes the piss on that tired old lazy journalism on Latino fans. Actually, here it is...sorry for the Japanese characters that intrude...

Morrissey, Jaguares

"Morrissey and the Eskimos who love him" ?Eanother possible topic the next time Spin and the L.A. Times pointlessly marvel at Moz fans of a different shade. "Tattoed Hispanic L.A. gangs," as London’s Independent simply put it, who sing along to lyrics like "Keats and Yeats are on your side." These kids might sound bizarre in dreary old England, where dirt is routinely shoveled over Morrissey’s career, but SoCal is a Morrisseydom perhaps unparalleled anywhere else (except maybe Texas). Here’s an entire subculture of kids from all ZIP codes who climax at reports of new songs (he’s been unleashing four during the tour) just as they would to Smiths selections. So think of this bill with one of Mexico’s best rock bands simply as the union of two great acts who musically don’t have a blessed thing in common. If you’ve been in the dark about Jaguares?E15-year career, start easy with the compilation La Historia by Caifanes (Jaguares?Efirst incarnation) and move up to the current Cuando la Sangre Galopa (When the Blood Races): Oldies like the synth-reggae-tinged "La Negra Tomasa" and the mystic percussiveness of the recent "La Vida No Es Igual" are all the translation you need. Also with Jumbo. Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, 2695 E. Katella Ave.; Fri., Sept. 13, 6 p.m. (213) 480-3232.

---

BTW, Jumbo were good fun. They're like a Mexican Weezer but less dorky and more interesting musically. I wished I had run into them at the airport. Instead, I ran into the Jaguares. They had to go through security screening, hah hah! I thought the Jaguares were okay when I heard their cd. But the first time I saw them in Anaheim, they struck me as a repulsive hair band. But they probably have more talent than GnR.

melinda mess-injure, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep--Old Shep--not Elvis, sorry! Does anyone know who sings the original then? I would love to hear the Cosmic Dancer cover...

I thought Jumbo were good too. Actually, I thought that Jumbo were Jaguares until Jaguares came out after M. The lead singer of Jumbo is very fanciable...

Melissa--what do you do in Japan? (I taught English in Chiba.)

That's a great Eskimo joke in the article...

It's on some crappy B-side.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you mean to say it's on the B-side of "Pregnant for the Last Time," recorded at a Netherlands show on the 1991 tour and leading into a version of "Disappointed" wherein... *wibbles off into eternity*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I like Pregnant For The Last Time quite a lot. It was one of his last six good songs.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the very sneaking suspicion that the judge who called Morrissey truculent, etc. is ITN news starlet (and best friend of friend) Romilly Weeks' dad.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm debating whether or not to go to Paris and Dublin for the shows now...

I shouldn't go, but I'll be depressed if I stay here on my 32nd burfday. Har har, no really. I am feeling my years, and I am ashamed of how little I have accomplished -- I am the wayward sister, the underachieving loser in my family.

Oh yeah, Mary, I corrupt the youth at a uni in Chiba prefecture. Great gig! Ostensibly I teach English literature and language.

To anyone interested, as part of their 20th anniversary Smiths week, BBC 6 Music are playing either 'London' or 'Half A Person' from the 1986 Peel session at about 12.20 today (ie. in about 45 mins).

If you're not in the UK or don't have digital radio you can listen a RealAudio feed here if you want.

Fuck - I am an idiot and I feel like I'm 15 again.

The new responses on this thread reminded me to check when they were reairing first part of the 'Smiths at the Beeb' programme, which I have a so-so tape of from when it first went out. So I checked and it was on from 9-9.30, meaning there was only 10 minutes left of it to go. I ejected my minidisc, ran to put it in the one connected to the digital box and pressed record. Only to find that the one thing I really wanted a better copy of (the Jensen version of Reel Around The Fountain, the best version) had started 20 seconds previously.

Second part tomorrow at 8PM GMT. Details of all the programmes here.

Mary, no, give your money to the poor children instead.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 May 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

N., the one bootleg I have may have the Jensen version -- it has all the Troy Tate session stuff + some radio/BBC which includes Reel Around the Fountain. I could put it up on soulseek or something if you're interested.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 12 May 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

That's very kind. I can't soulseek on a Mac though. I'll have a think.

I'm in the orchestra, but I forget where. But, every show I've just been going to the front. But, I fear this tactic may not meet with success at RCMH. Wanna get a drink or something before hand? Assuming you are not bringing Ms. Library?

(Ned, he apologized in Philly for the increase in ticket prices. Apparently the skyrocketing price of NiQuil is to blame.

Hah, the current tour referred to in the title of this thread was five years ago!

So Mozzer is doing an unprecedented 10 date residency at the Hollywood Palladium and a fewer date residency at the Hammerstein in NYC, plus some other dates in Mexico and the U.S.

There's a big ole drama queen press release at the people's ministry of information:
http://true-to-you.net/morrissey_news_070822_01

The most interesting part, once I wrapped my head around the notion that it's not necessarily retirement, was that he can boast of turning down $75 MILLION to turn up on a stage 50x with Johnny Marr and not neccessarily have to share it with Joyce or Rourke.

Melinda Mess-injure, Friday, 24 August 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Curtis he's doing another GA date! You can see him twice in one year!

Trayce, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

This makes no sense. Morrissey is exhausted from touring, so he decides to . . . add 30+ more dates, mostly revisiting the places he's already been.

The wise Mary said

[he should do a covers album like Bryan Ferry circa 70s (or present) as my sister says he has such a beautiful voice and if he's running a little dry on the material end why not?]

and I agree!

so what 10 songs should he sing?

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 June 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Let's see - I'm going to start with ... 'The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side'. He does actually drive a car, after all.

or 'Candy': "I know you'll find a better man / they're oh so easy to find"

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 June 2008 10:41 (seventeen years ago)

In fact, for crying out loud, let's just have a Morrissey Covers Merritt LP.

This is the greatest idea I've had since ... since ... somebody else will have to tell me since what.

the pinefox, Thursday, 26 June 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

I'd like to see him do something outside of his usual range, like Led Zeppelin maybe? Something from the third album would be good.
