irrational angst that makes me innocuously thingy (darraghmac), Monday, 25 June 2012 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

The ultimate vanity? Standing in front of people and 'making' them hear you. Or the ultimate in vulnerable positions?

Which is why Karaoke needs alcohol and/or friends and/or a 'who cares, do it' attitude.

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2012 11:29 (thirteen years ago)

I have fronted occasional covers bands, I did sing for a bit in a theatre co.

Eventually, found I had a half-way decent/strong vocal, but by then it was goodnight vienna as far as the 'bands' caper went, so since then..

I'd do occasional kara, sometimes when the night looked like it was on it's arse otherwise. Found "Superstition" worked quite well, enjoyed singing it fronting a 'live karaoke band'.

since then, once more, suddenly got the feeling "this is silly!" and resolved no more kara.

I can just about justify category 3, but I have a range somewhere between Nick Cave and the mythical brown tone.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 25 June 2012 11:35 (thirteen years ago)

2, I've got a not bad voice (but getting worse from neglect and abuse).

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 25 June 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

Good god, no I do not sing. Especially annoying being a woman in bands, because the first question from people outside the music world is always "oh, so you sing?" Not offensive at all, people.

emil.y, Monday, 25 June 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

The answers presuppose that I would be dumb enough to sing in front of anyone in the first place. Not me guv!

I'm okay. I find singing - especially karaoke - to be a bit like doing impressions of people.

Could not hold a 3-note tune given all the buckets in the world. Strange bcz my parents both sing in choirs and are apparently pretty good at it.

I have wondered if this is due to a similar phenomenon as "language ego" and if I could just bring myself to try I could learn how to do it, but my feeble attempts in the shower remind me I cannot hit the notes I think I'm going to, so I don't think it's just psychological.

Have been the lead singer in both original and cover bands but frankly I think I have a shit voice so ¯\(°_o)/¯

Julie Derpy (Phil D.), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sort of in between 1 and 2 - I've sung in friends bands but no pay is forthcoming, too minor a work rly. But there are a few trax out in the ether with my singing on them, and positive comments thereupon (it helps that the music I sang on rocks)

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

fuck no

undermikey: bidness (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

If I try and sing along to reedy indie voices in a reedy indie voice then I struggle massively and squeak and squawk all over the shop. If I drop to a doomy Nick Cave register, I cope absolutely fine.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

have sung in bands and at social clubs but not for money, love a karaoke or a carol service or a choir, don't think i have a very good voice but i can hold a tune tho years of clean living have ravaged the top end a bit

democracy defends capital (Noodle Vague), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

no. in my mind i have a decent voice but in reality i'm a mess. the best i can hope for is a decent calvin johnson type-a-sound

Smothered, Covered and Chunked!!! (a hoy hoy), Monday, 25 June 2012 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

I am absolutely terrible at singing. This really upsets me as I love music and singing so much, but I'm just so bad at it. I always think I sound OK singing along to the radio in my car but then my pals have hauled me up to karaoke on drunken nights out and I get so many "wtf are you DOING?" looks that I realise I'm just kidding myself.

What annoys me is that my bestest gal-pals are really good singers and like to spend evenings playing guitar and singing along and I have to just mumble a bit and hope no-one notices the faint squawking cat noises from the corner (I can't play guitar either, and always feel I should be hanging about somewhere else at these points).

ailsa, Monday, 25 June 2012 12:46 (thirteen years ago)

not really. I was tongue-tied as a kid so I have rubbish diction. can keep lalas and aaaahhs in tune thought, which is ok for backing vox.

thomasintrouble, Monday, 25 June 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

I only ended up the singer in most of my bands because I couldn't twist anyone else's arm into doing it. Still can't stand the sound of my own voice, but people have paid me to do it, so...

White Chocolate Cheesecake, Monday, 25 June 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I love to sing, and what I lack in talent I make up for with sheer enthusiasm. I don't know on a quality level where my voice is -- it sounds okay in my head and I'm a pretty good mimic, but god knows how it sounds to anyone else.

I guess my answer is 3, if the answer was I WILL SING ALL OF THE KARAOKE NO MATTER HOW BADLY BCZ SCREW YOU GUYS

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 25 June 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

exactly what veg grrl said + enjoy dancing/showboating enough to do it in front of people, but only under low pressure/noncompetitive circumstances, with the right people, and to the song of my choice. i really enjoy the act of singing regardless of whether or not i'm good at it.

also enjoy frequent singing in the car and shower, but usually when i'm alone (which is to say that i don't force anyone to listen to me)
singing is an act of joy more than anything else, i think?

still, have never sung in front of people in a "serious" setting whatsoever (but i would! i think?)

nicest bitch of poster (La Lechera), Monday, 25 June 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

Veg why did we not do ALL THE KARAOKE while you were here, dammit.

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 25 June 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

i'm in the mark g camp - fronted occasional cover bands, now it's just random karaoke and what i strum at home etc etc. that said i'm still not convinced i can "sing" so much as carry a tune and not forget the words.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Monday, 25 June 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

omg Trayce we will totally have to do it next time!

we had a work getaway a month back and they had karaoke for us on the first night - I had had maybe 2 (two) beers tops...I think I sang like 5 songs just myself, lol. Everyone else was getting signed up by friends as jokes and I was all, 'omg karaoke weeeee!!!'

I can't sing harmony worth spit. I can mimic songs I have often heard others sing, so long as I do not need to transpose the key very drastically, or shift from major to minor in midstream or stuff like that. So, I'm meh, but not horrific.

Aimless, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

jjj we should do karaoke when I come to MN
