i am both, but people i meet always seem to come out with either "o i am a cat person i cant stand dogs" or " o god i hate cats" which bothers me a bit, how could you say you cant stand either animal?

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll resist just saying that I am a human person. I much prefer cats. On the other hand: there are two types of person in the world, those who keep saying that there are two types of person in the world, and those who think that's bollocks. I am the latter type.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

yes there at least 38 types of people in the world

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess dogs can't help the fact that their owners are assholes, right? I hate stepping in shit, and I hate the fact that so may urban yuppies lock their big dogs away in tiny apartments, which causes the dog to bark and whine. :-(

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

most definately not the poor dogs fault, anyone who does that doesnt deserve to have pets

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I like both.

I have a dog. He is a German Wirehaired Pointer. He looks very cute, with his great big teddy-bear nose and his floppy ears and stupid grin. However he is also a thief and a liar who is always getting into terrible scrapes. Like the time he escaped from my garden one Sunday morning (he is like Houdini), broke into a neighbour's house, and ate four cooked breakfasts off their kitchen table before they could stop him. And the time he stole a baguette out of someone else's shopping bag, and came galumphing back home with it - but not before he had used this mouth-borne weapon to go clattering into a ladder at the top of which was an elderly man painting window frames. Nasty.

My two cats, however, are less entertaining. They snooze a lot by day, and catch vast quantities of headless wildlife by night, leaving the chewed remains outside the kitchen door for me to find each morning. Oh, Joy!

I'm a bit of both too, although I love all animals.

Shaz, Monday, 16 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Is anyone here an... ALLIGATOR WOMAN???

Cameo (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 September 2002 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Only when pre-menstrually snappy

C J (C J), Monday, 16 September 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone ever held a real live snake? I'd love to hold one, don't know why.

Shaz, Monday, 16 September 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you not have a Snake-Fondling-R-Us in your town, Shaz?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 September 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I held a snake once (god, that sounds so bad if taken out of context), and it was really neat--much different than I thought it'd be, warmer and drier (ahem). I highly recommend it.

nory (nory), Monday, 16 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish. Is there one near you Martin? Haha, that would be great if there was.

Shaz, Monday, 16 September 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey- I clean up after my dog, and he goes to work with me all day, where he's quiet, very well behaved, and well trained- he doesn't sit in my apartment and whine all day. He sits under my desk when we're not out playing frisbee, and I'm careful to make sure that he has extrememly good manners. Your complaint should be more about obnoxious yuppies who do a lot of other dumb things, than about dog owners.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't say that I hate dogs, just that I'm not used to how some of them will jump all over you out of sheer friendliness. And my discomfort with that probably stems from having grown up with cats, which ordinarily will leave you alone (unless they think it's time for them to be fed).

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Dog owners are the biggest problem with dogs: that is correct.

I am more of a cat person, but I am allergic to them. Dogs can be nice to hang out with for a while, but I don't like their unpredictable aggressiveness. They are uncivilized (imagine the voice of William Burroughs saying that). They are pretty fascinating though.

Oh yes, and I just love how my brother's big dog (I can't even remember the breed) rams her extremely strong head into me and stuck her snout into my crotch while I was sitting at the dinner table. My own brother, a problem dog owner.

I can't stop it from being stripey . :(

yuck. http://members.aol.com/lis00bor/hound.jpg

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

lyra I din't mean to be taken so literally. I thought it was obvious that I was only complaining about a certain segment of dog owners versus ALL of them. I have to admit, though, that I am bitter. I live in the actual and official world capital of arsehole yuppie dog-owners, Alexandria, Virginia. The only type of dog-owner I dislike are those people that seem to value the life of their dog over the lives of other people around them. Did you see "Best in Show"? I know a *lot* of people who are like that yuppie couple.
I still love dogs, though. My friend has a Jack Russell terrier that is smarter than a lot of humans I know!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry, my literalism filter or something was broken today, so my apologies for snapping at you. :- (
I haven't seen Best in Show even though there's a sheltie in it- it's on my list of movies to rent one day, though. Jack Russells and border collies are awesome dogs because they're so smart, but I think it would be exhausting to own one of either breed.

I EAT KITTENS

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

cats and dogs are not distinct categories -- it's a continuum. i have pictures to prove it.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a cat person.

Until recently I hated dogs. Now I don't quite hate them but I don't like them either. They smell (all dogs smell, they smell like dogs), they don't retract their claws, they have ugly bare patches on their tummies, they make horrible noises but worst of all, they have no self respect.

A dog came to live with me this weekend. She smells and I think she's got fleas. My cats don't like her but one of them might soon.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a dog person.

However, people who keep dogs, especially big dogs in inner cities, ESPECIALLY the East End = MAJOR FUCKING DUD.

When I lived in the country, I liked animals a lot. Now I live in the city, they all irritate me slightly.

I know that most of the things that I have against cats are not against the animals at all, but against the (lack of) hygeine habits of their owners. Cats are actually by nature quite clean.

Catfight

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Nacho — see thread N. just linked to — is still my favourite dog. Sistrah Becky has a nu-cat, Yoko, which has swung me back somewhat.

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Toraneko. It's the self respect bit. Real hardcore dog lovers always say 'oh, but he's so intelligent, he does exactly what I say.'

Cats, like any self-respecting human, if asked to fetch, will look at you with utter disdain and stalk off. You can almost hear them thinking 'Oh for God's sake, fetch it yourself if it means that much.'

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

If I wanted intelligence I'd get a human.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna, Jack Dee used to do a good little piece along those lines, talking about putting a shelf up (I am undoubtedly misremembering it). A dog looks at you clearly thinking "I have no idea what you're doing but I love you anyway," while a cat is clearly thinking "You're doing it all wrong, you fool." In my case, the cat is certainly right.

CJ, i like your dog.....i miss mine, one died and the other one still lives with her dad ( my ex ) in australia..so does our cat whom i miss too.
one of my dogs stole a very long sausage from the room of a boarder we had.........she ran down the hallway with it streaming behind her like some bizarre kite, then she shared it with her mate. cool.
i love animals, they are for sure so much cooler than people.

I couldn't be bothered with either, I kind of prefer fish, I don't have any pets but someday I want a massive tank of fish.
