i found myself wondering this the other day. would dinosaurs have evolved into something else? would the world be run by a race of intelligent dinosauroids today?

I would like if they evolved into luck dragons like Falkor, who you could ride through the fantastic skies/befriend.=

On one of my recent visits to the Cleveland Zoo, we were standing in front of a habitat containing zebras and some other African fauna (some sort of gazelle, some birds, etc.). Standing next to us was a mom with two little boys, maybe ages 5 and 7? At one point, the older one looked at his mom and asked, in complete sincerity, "Mom, what's gonna happen when they bring back dinosaurs?" I was like THIS KID IS MY HERO.

Real answer: the world would have very few mammals in it and certainly no humans. Birds still would have evolved, I think. Most of the species of dinosaurs we know about from fossils would still be extinct, and there would be many, many new species of small dinosaurs to fill the new niches created by grasslands and new tree species.

Aimless, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 04:50 (twelve years ago) link

Out of curiosity (my archaeolgy etc knowledge is p bad) why would there be no humans, do you think?

xp
Mammals got their big chance by emerging from the dinosaur die-off into a mostly depopulated world, where niches were wide open for the taking. The chances of replicating the evolutionary line that led to humans in a world where mammals had few opportunities to expand and speciate, due to competition from well-established dinosaur species occupying most niches in advance, seems extremely remote to me.

But then the chances of humans having emerged with their massive, but generalized, intelligence, at least an order of magnitude beyond other species like chimps and whales, seems pretty remote even with the dinosaurs having crapped out of the game.

re: danny and the dinosaur
I DID have that book! I have no memory of the plot. It didn't explain how Danny's dinosaur escaped extinction though I bet.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 06:15 (twelve years ago) link

I think I remember Danny and the dinosaur like, eating icecream and visiting the zoo

Chris S, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 06:19 (twelve years ago) link

was this book some kind of blockbuster hit? i can't imagine such an un-assuming book being a hit today. the dinosaur would need a skateboard or something. and danny would have to be a cyborg

prob would've gone something like how things go from this post forward: jurassic park

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 06:41 (twelve years ago) link

someone once got seriously angry at me for suggesting that it would be cool if we could bring back dinosaurs and spent about 10 minutes lecturing me about why it would be an ethical travesty, etc. this was at thanksgiving dinner, btw.

Wasn't there a theory circulating a while back that some of those great lizards actually had feathers? Remember seeing a couple of clips from news shows where they'd got t-rexs covered in feathers & don't think it was April.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 10:06 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think feathered dinosaurs is pretty uncontroversial these days:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velociraptor#Feathers

back to dino-man, whole bunch of stuff on him if you google stenonychosaurus.

Scientists do not know most dinosaurs became extinct; they assume it because few relatives exist today in forms recognizable as dinosaurs.

But what if one or two examples actually survived and managed to evolve into highly intelligent creatures capable of building not only simple weapons, but sophisticated craft to explore the cosmos?

The Sauroids would have a 64 million year head start on homo sapiens. They could have built their empires and space craft and disappeared among the stars millions of years before humans ever evolved to walk upon this planet
