What is this list, though. A few of these I wouldn't even call chick flicks.

There's this weird mix of rom coms and tearjerkers that is offputting to me.

well...are those not the two ends of the chick flick spectrum as it is generally understood?

some dude, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 02:35 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like they would've had to open the floodgate to a half dozen other female-driven teen movies (which they seemed to studiously avoid doing) before 'traveling pants' made the cut

the only movie on this list that imitation of life ... or anything else by Douglas Sirk ... does NOT shit on is breakfast at tiffany's. and i'm not even a fan of either imitation of life OR Douglas Sirk.

15. My Best Friend's Wedding
11. An Affair To Remember
10. Thelma & Louise

The Notebook is the worst movie ever made with one of the greatest performances of the '00s. Love Actually is mostly meh but I love love love Emma Thompson in it.

When Harry Met Sally, no competition. Watched it again the other night after Ephron died, and it's still flawless imo. Predictable choice but nothing else on the list touches it.

Putting aside the weirdness of lumping movies from different genres because their audience OR their cast is predominantly female, of what I've seen

Love, Actually: wife made me watch this last Christmas, some cute performances but I'm just not the target audience for It's A British, British, British, British Romcom

First Wives' Club: Haven't seen it in forever, do miss Bette Midler being in things.

Beaches: Family loved this, but I managed to avoid seeing it all the way through. For a while I've been wondering if the title is an intentional play on words. Wouldn't put it past Garry Marshall

Working Girl: liked it as a kid, but it's been a long time and seems kind of retrograde in hindsight

9 to 5: loved this as a kid, and there are still little bits that crack me up thinking about it

Thelma & Louise: always struck me as kind of fucked up and contrived but hey so is Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid

Ghost: I've really been wanting to see this again lately, mostly for Patrick Swayze scenes - feel like he carried this movie and doesn't get enough credit for it

Steel Magnolias: saw this recently, and a million times as a kid. So blatantly Southern Terms Of Endearment but the actresses push it forward.

Sleepless In Seattle: Haven't seen this in forever but in hindsight feels like a movie about desperate lunatics full of little quirks and jokes to keep us from realizing it's about desperate lunatics.

Terms Of Endearment: Finally saw it not to long ago, and it felt like a supercut of highlights from a long-running TV drama. Some good performances but James L Brooks is crazy overrated.

Notebook: classic. I have a lot of respect for OTT romances as long they're not boring, and thanks in big part to the leads, it does.

Breakfast At Tiffany's: Felt weird when I saw it as a kid, honestly don't remember much aside from Mickey Rourke and Jed Clampett.

Pretty Woman: I don't get Julia Roberts, I don't get Richard Gere, and I don't get how Garry Marshall can take the grossest stories and make them into blockbusters.

When Harry Met Sally: gonna have to vote for this. It's crazy that Rob Reiner, Nora Ephron, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal could make something this good considering how horrible all their stuff would be within a decade.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:06 (twelve years ago) link

would have been cooler if they broke this down to its sub-categories - top 25 family dramas, top 25 extreme romances, so they could fit more stuff in like Home For The Holidays or Somewhere In Time

Putting aside the weirdness of lumping movies from different genres because their audience OR their cast is predominantly female, of what I've seen

well that'd be a fair critique of the list if the people who made it invented the term 'chick flicks,' and whoever did invent the term deserves a little shade, but i mean it's an old old term, and i think they did a decent job of isolating the range of movies it refers to.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:26 (twelve years ago) link

lol 'extreme romances'

some dude, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:27 (twelve years ago) link

Voting for Bridges of Madison County. Almost more than any other film, the perfect example of how bad prose doesn't hurt a movie, any more than great prose helps (Billy Bathgate, Bonfire, etc.).

Odd Spice (Eazy), Tuesday, 10 July 2012 13:27 (twelve years ago) link

mainly i'm just impressed that they included all of the movies my mother (Ghost, Thelma & Louise, First Wives Club, Beaches, My Best Friend's Wedding) or wife (Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias, Bridget Jones) will watch at the drop of a hat that will make me leave the room. WHMS is the one i like way more than they do. The Devil Wears Prada, Love Actually and Breakfast At Tiffany's are the ones everyone agrees on.

I may have to pick "Love Story" just because of its total ridiculousness and the fond memory of the audience participation heckle-viewing shown to us during freshman week.

I do hate Terms, but can see its appeal; Dolly Parton brightens up 9 to 5; and there are always the fashions in Breakfast. The only movie here I really hate unreservedly is Sleepless in Seattle. Ugh this plot! Is An Affair To Remember any better?

I love Legally Blonde as hit-miss comedy and My Best Friend's Wedding and Bridget Jones's Diary for being pretty much the model for bleachers-pleasing rom-com. Didn't see The Al Gore Story, The Way We Were, The First Wives' Club, Beaches, Steel Magnolias, or Sex And The City.

I (male) saw Thelma and Louise and never thought of it as a chick flick.

Voted for "Love Actually" because I first saw it with a woman I used to live with who I still like, and we both thought it to be a good film, and she left me the DVD to remind me of her. I think the intended humour of the opening was completely lost on most Americans though.
