scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

'independent' is doing a lot of unneccessary work in that blurb, for one thing

if you are a false nine don't entry (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

you're not a jerk; this is annoying and even though art is work, imo any real artist would be a bit embarrassed to have their life/work/art talked about like this on a poster that seems to speak for all artists. work is work and sometimes it's passionate and sometimes it's art.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like such a crank cuz people share that all over the place on facebook and the responses to it are always OH GOD YES A THOUSAND TIMES I CAN'T LIKE THIS ENOUGH POWER TO THE PEOPLE and i'm always tempted to post something really mean but i don't cuz i'm not THAT big of a jerk.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

it's REALLY narcissistic and kinda weird to think that people buy art in order to suck up the "passion" of the artist like a vampire. people like art so they can form their own meanings/interpretations/relationships to it.

ryan, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

"my SOUL is in this, that's why it's valuable"-- you keep it then!

ryan, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

also this boils down to: gimme money so i can continue to be all about my passions and inner life.

ryan, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i don't really want most people's souls!

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i think it reminds me of the kickstarter guilt-y thing.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

work is work and sometimes it's passionate and sometimes it's art.

art is art and sometimes it's passionate and sometimes it's work.

ledge, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

like we must support as many people as possible to do art? can't support everyone. then i start to feel bad for people who are like...starving to death in the world.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

just what i always wanted thousands of hours of failure

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

and maybe i'm just jealous cuz i have had to work full-time since i was 19? i could never afford to "do art" all day. and i'm a well-respected fictional character! i would love an art holiday. i do what i can with the time that i have. but that is my problem and not soul-giving artist's problem.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that thousandth failure might actually be a clue...time to rethink the art thing.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

hahaaa

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

You are buying hundreds of hours of experimentation and thousands of failures.

I do not want to buy the experimentation or failures. I just want to buy this particular piece of art.

You are buying days, weeks, months, years of frustration and moments of pure joy.

I'm certainly not getting days, weeks, and months from this purchase, and if I were able to buy additional time I wouldn't want to buy time that includes frustration. Just the high octane serenity time.

You are buying nights of worry about paying the rent, having enough money to eat, having enough money to feecd the children, the birds, the dog.

Do not want.

You aren't just buying a thing, you are buying a piece of heart,

Gross.

Mordy, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

"you are buying that artist more time to do something they are truly passionate about" -- i.e., drink beer and smoke cigarettes!

so, let me ask: Non-indie musicians don't do any of this kind of work-prep?

Mark G, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny that you read that and then you buy like this weird blob-painting kinda thing or quirky sculpture. gimme the 9th symphony if it comes with all that sturm and drang.

ryan, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

Mordy, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it's incredibly obnoxious and entitled but even I feel slightly guilty for saying that b/c it makes me some kind of soulless free marketeer

my friend is always posting shit like that about his excessively skilled but not all that listenable jazz-funk-experimental trio, and sometimes I just want to be like "Look, do you really think you'd be making a great living doing this in the days BEFORE mp3s?"

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

as much as i'd love it if someone paid me my current salary to sit at home for a year and write fiction, i understand that the way the world works is that first you create the art on your own time and at your own expense, and then if you're lucky and people like it, maybe you'll get funded for the next project. if people don't like the current project, you don't get paid.

Mordy, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

i would never say this stuff on my facebook. too many innocent souls. i knew there was a reason i was still on ilx.

scott seward, Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

"independent" and "local" are the last refuges of hacks, basically

Will Chave (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 July 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

also when i read this i picture people selling their novels on the street. or laying a blanket down at the arts fair and putting their novels on it.

having said that, i would probably totally buy a novel off of someone on the street.

When you buy from MegaCorp, you're purchasing more than just life insurance. You're buying hundreds of hours of endless board meetings and administrative errors. You are buying days of multiple signature sign-offs, mind numbingly tedious health and safety audits. You are buying days, weeks, months of redundancy fears, family problems and very little joy. You aren't just buying a thing, you are buying a piece of people's livelihoods. More importantly, you are buying our workers more time to do something that they may not be passionate about, but are thankful for; something that makes all the fear and the doubt just about worth getting out of bed for every single mindnumbing day.

To think that only 13 years ago, we didn't really have an agreed term for memes and people would alternately refer to them as "image macros" or "that artist thing"

I remember one time over a decade ago, around the time when the term was adopted, when I overheard (Dutch, as I am) colleagues talking about a meme and pronouncing the word as 'meh-meh', or rather 'maymay'. It actually got me insecure for a moment as to what the correct pronunciation was.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:35 (four months ago)

yeah i've heard people pronounce it "me-me". up there with saying "jif" for "gif" and pronouncing "troll" to rhyme with "doll"

DLC Soundsystem (dog latin), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 15:53 (four months ago)

I wasn't aware of troll not rhyming with doll, but a quick Google search tells me it might be 'trowl' but it also looks like many English natives think it's like doll.
It might be a regional thing, not like scone which should be scon even though a large part of the world makes it rhyme with bone.

GIF is actually supposed to be 'jif' because the creator said so.

Valentijn, Tuesday, 18 March 2025 16:12 (four months ago)

GIF = Giraffics Interchange Format

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 18 March 2025 17:25 (four months ago)

The creators of the format pronounced the acronym GIF as /dʒɪf/, with a soft g, with Wilhite stating that he intended for the pronunciation to deliberately echo the American peanut butter brand Jif, and CompuServe employees would often quip "choosy developers choose GIF", a spoof of Jif's television commercials.[14]

"Gerrymandering" was named after a wild map that Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry came up with.

His surname is pronounced with a hard "g" sound, like Gertrude or what a dog says when he's angry.

So now that you know, from now on, you had better pronounce it Garymandering.
