y'know
these soft-voiced, earnest, frustrated actor, skinny, indie-outdoor coiffed/dressed guys narrating and presenting otherwise tolerable programmes
is this brian cox's fault? now dominik diamond's hippie cousin is all over anything with a beach, and i'm currently being shushed through a programme about volcanoes that's being ruined by a no doubt expert but get him the fuck away from the mic dramatist.
Pics, clips, examples, discuss?

not british but brian greene kinda bugs me
― du. duplass. duplass mich. (goole), Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)
should note that cox's first two programmes were among my favourite of the past few years, tbf, but i've not decided is that despite him or not

Magnus Pyke you are missed.

Ben Goldacre clearly belongs here, even if he doesn't appear on TV much.http://cdn.psfk.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ben-goldacre.jpg?fedaf9

knowing no more than what i see from that pic, emil.y otm

Getting a more old school OU vibe from him, tbh.

Aawww, I quite like Ben Goldacre, even if I can't stand his "EVIDENCE-BASED SCIENCE!!! IN YOUR FACE 4EVAH!!!!!" fanboy types.
But I also liked Brian Cox way before any of the cool kids did and, erm, haven't seen anything he's presented in years TBH.
― Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
Oh, I like Ben Goldacre too. Have the same problem with him as you, though, particularly as he's incredibly bitchy about arts subjects. To be honest, I doubt I'll really hate any of the guys up for lampooning on this thread, I like Cox just fine as well. But lampoon them we still must.
― emil.y, Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)
otm!
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:25 (thirteen years ago)
i have to hand it to brian cox for making sentences like "the stars are varied in size and colour" sound like he's opening your third eye
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)
who's dominik diamond's hippie cousin? the guy from coast? i feel that he pre-dates cox by a bit (though my internet is too shit to bother checking), but he may pass for more of an old school eccentric rather than the chummy charming thing that follows in the wake of cox.
― Merdeyeux, Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)
yeah the guy from coast.
tracer otm, we had considerable discussion of cox's irritating need to beseech towards wonder as anthemic indie guitars swooshed in the background in the thread for 'history of the solar system' iirc.
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:36 (thirteen years ago)
wonders of the solar system, that is
"some planets might have deserts. a desert is a place with no water. here is a desert, its amazing" - brian cox in a desert

but he pronounces it 'amerzing-uhhh' with a question mark at the end
heh re-reading that thread i've said all this before
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)
feel like goldacre has an acid/stoner boho thing going on behind it all.
― woof, Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:41 (thirteen years ago)
Am I the only person who parsed part of the opening post as "a No Doubt expert".
― Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)
ya everything from 'no' thru to 'mic' should be hyphenated but i overdo that tbh so
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)
I wish we had this problem in the US.
― Theodora Celery, Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)
i appreciate that- rather these programmes get made with budget, prime-time slots etc
but cmon ian mckellen or whoever can't be that busy
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)
Instead we get thishttp://i.imgur.com/tzOnN.jpg
and Doctor Oz/The Doctors medical advice shows.
― Theodora Celery, Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)
he appears to be accelerating
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:21 (thirteen years ago)
possibly his teeth are attempting to run away from the rest of him idk
I would KILL for Giorgio Tsoukalos and Ben Goldacre to have a crazed hair throw-down.
― Theodora Celery, Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)
The guy on the volcano program has been doing this way before Brian Cox and his look at the stars presentation style (though admittedly it's very similar since he also stand on the mountainsides and stuff). His first few TV series, e.g. Journeys from the Centre of the Earth, were pretty good at explaining geology etc.
Also really like the presenters who do try and go into the details of the science, such as Marcus du Sautoy (but he looks less like the indie-outdoor type).

ben's busy touring with the editors right now, feel like his infotainment career is on the backburner

The "Ancient Aliens" guy.http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/ancient-aliens

Er, Ancient Aliens isn't Sagan's fault; rather the British aesthetic trend thing.

Sometimes B. Cox looks truly hot to me, tbh.
― Turangalila, Friday, 13 July 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)
hotness not disputed (not breached tbh, each to their own)
― i read like cookie monster eats (darraghmac), Friday, 13 July 2012 00:12 (thirteen years ago)
doesn't really fit here, science-wise, but this guy:
http://www.tmcentertainment.co.uk/images/speaker-index/SpeakOutNeilOliver.jpg
is worse than any of these people. "soft-voiced, earnest, frustrated actor," holy shit, and then some. totally manufactured persona.

in America's defense, we also have Neil Degrasse Tyson:

James Burke singlehandedly inspired thousands of D&D dungeonmasters to create a +3 Intelligence "Magical Leisure Suit of Arcane Knowledge."
