it wasnt until the louis c.k. wtf episode that i realized what a O_o talent pool this show had

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 14 July 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I knew about Colbert and carell but Charlie Kaufman blew my mind

President Keyes, Saturday, 14 July 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

wow i had no idea

so this show was funny?

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)

it's pretty good, yeah. some dumb/dated moments but y'know, 90s.

my brother and i watched it every week during that short period it was actually on and would quote favorite sketches for years, it was weird to realize a decade later that i'd been quoting carrell/colbert/etc.

some dude, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

i see that this is actually the second thread on this topic and the third on dana carvey overall

but there's not really an episode s/d thing going on

anybody recommend any particular bits

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

i understand there's an *amazing* bill clinton sketch

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

It used to be on hulu. Maybe it still is?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

as i understand it the opening sketch of the first show was bill clinton with pig teats. or that was the planned opening anyway.

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 15 July 2012 00:59 (thirteen years ago)

as opposed to the ordinary bill clinton?

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:00 (thirteen years ago)

the Clinton with teats feeding puppies sketch WAS the first sketch they ever aired. and it wasn't very good imo, although that fact/story is pretty great in and of itself.

imo the best sketches were 'germans who say nice things,' carvey & carrell's stupid pranks, leftover beatles memories, 'mountain dew looks like, skinheads from maine, and the o.g. brokaw doing gerald ford's obituary

but uh search & destroy is kinda silly for a show whose entire run you can watch in like 3 hours.

some dude, Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

oh really? ha!

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

so it only ran for six episodes, and all those people were on every episode?

the late great, Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)

I remember Carvey on Letterman or Conan or one of them after it was cancelled, showing that Clinton-teat sketch and Carvey showing the "live ratings drop".

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

haha

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

they were all on the writing staff for its run, only colbert and especially carrell got substantial camera time in every ep (xpost)

some dude, Sunday, 15 July 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

there are some full episodes (if not all of them) on youtube btw

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Sunday, 15 July 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

polyphonic, Sunday, 15 July 2012 06:17 (thirteen years ago)

that's it, then, that's who i'm voting for

some dude, Sunday, 15 July 2012 10:10 (thirteen years ago)

okay I just watched the first episode of this, holy shit I can't believe this was on ABC in 1996

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Sunday, 15 July 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

iirc, each episode had a different sponsor. So one week it would be "The Taco Bell Dana Carvey Show" and another week it would be "The Burger King Dana Carvey Show" or something. Carvey defended it along the lines of getting paid, plus things like Texaco Star Theater in the 50s. Problem was, Taco Bell didn't particularly want to be associated with a lactating president.

I still crack up everytime I think of Carell saying "It was a pleasure babysitting Kevin!" in that thick German accent.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)

my favorite line from that is "SURPRISE! I'M YOUR SECRET SANTA!!" but yes, totally

well it was more than that, they outright ridiculed the sponsors in some of the goofy theme songs and especially the "Mountain Dew looks like" sketch. plus i think the whole retro theme of the sponsorships went over most of the audience's head or seemed more overtly cheesy than knowingly subversive, etc.

some dude, Monday, 16 July 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

i was thinking of staring a 90s sketch comedy show poll but thought i might forget something, what am i forgetting al?

The Vacant Lot was my fav random sketch show that Comedy Central aired for a couple years in the 90s

your idea might be redundant w/ this thread though, might wanna check: Greatest American sketch comedy TV show of the late 20th century

two weeks pass...

right now steve carell is on conan and conan goes "you have these characters you like to make up on the spot when you're here, what was the one you did before?" and carell went into the german who says nice things bit like it's just something he pulled out of thin air and didn't do on tv 15 years ago. kinda lame!
