is this even possible? how would you know if you had actually done your best?

Cliche that leads people to actually not try their best, imo, because you can always fall back on "I did my best" as an excuse.

Maybe you can't know, but it doesn't follow that you can't do your best. Just that it's uncertain when it happens.
