jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 11:46 (thirteen years ago)

let's turn this into a quiz thread then.

what movie is this still taken from?

http://filmfanatic.org/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2006/10/FinalScene.JPG

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

the spirit of the beehive

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

incorrect.

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

(an interesting guess though!)

(Wld be against the spirit of the (beehive) thread to use tineye/other image lookup tools for these images, I think?)

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

The Sacrifice it is.

I want to say Au Hasard Balthazar, but that doesn't seem right.

Marco YOLO (Phil D.), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:19 (thirteen years ago)

A couple of decades out, also no donkeys in this iirc.

Probably too large, but anyway:

American, early '70s.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

I want to say American Graffiti...

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

No--contemperaneous.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

By which I mean contemporaneous with its year of release, not American Graffiti. I don't know, maybe it's too obscure without any people in the image.

Long Goodbye?

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

One more clue, then I'll just give it--nothing as famous as Mean Streets or The Long Goodbye. 1971, drug-related.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

The Panic in Needle Park?

Tartar Mouantcheoux (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

lol i didn't notice the palm trees before

Tartar Mouantcheoux (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

Good guess, but no. Cisco Pike--the other '71 film about drugs with Gene Hackman. I think it's near the end, just before everything goes bad. If you include a character in the still, this is too easy; if not, too hard.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

The Dreamers.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't seen it but kind of want to because I hear Michael Pitt is nakey a lot.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

Late '70s, American, cult film, well-known director.

'the dreamers' is worth seeing. characters are all film buffs and do get nakey a lot.

Michael Pitt = meh.
Louis Garrel = yum!
The Dreamers itself = meh.

"Two lane blacktop" innit?

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

Two Lane Blacktop is early 70s.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

Badlands?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

You'd think so, but no--that's early '70s. (I was wrong on the Cisco Pike year--'72, not '71.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)

Not Badlands, either--'73.

I guess that's not really a cult film is it.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

Thinking about Dreyfuss in his pick-up, wouldn't doubt there's a similar shot in that. You've got the right year.

New York City, 1971--these are all good guesses. It's The Possession of Joel Delaney. I've never seen it, but I came across this great still online of Shirley MacLaine in a cab, went ahead and ordered a copy.

Hah, have seen POJD. Interesting movie - first twenty minutes or so almost play like a Woody Allen movie (w/out the overt comedy) before the supernatural theme is introduced. There is also a slightly transgressive child abuse angle that would be swiftly excised from any modern remake. Directed by the man who also directed the first ever episode of Doctor Who episode!

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Friday, 14 August 2015 14:21 (ten years ago)

When I came across that still, I was actually looking for a still from Desperate Characters--also New York City, 1971. I think there might be a poll there.

that is Cold Turkey, a satire of smalltown America (and cigarette smoking) directed and co-written by Norman Lear, starring Dick Van Dyke and Bob Newhart, well worth seeking out.
