N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like CAFE NAZ but others think it is overrated bah chiz.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i am going for a drink at 93 feet east, and i am hungry. yesterday i ate fish and chips on essex road, sat outside the south library.

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

see if you can find a curry place gareth :):):) cafe naz isn't that bad but it is RIGHT up the other end of brick lane to 93ft east and i'm sure you'll find a better/cheaper place before you get to it!

katie (katie), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I reckon they will all be pretty good anyways.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

93 feet east was totally dead, and so was the truman brewery, so we wandered up to the electricity showrooms and that was dead, ended up in the red lion which was better. i think i'll stick to soho from now on

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

they're all good.

I've only been to two of them, each only once.

yum yum.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Try The Moonsoon or Grambangla.

eleven months pass...
How is Brick Lane Beigel Bake? (There is now a restaurant on 6th St. called Brick Lane.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 August 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

dont talk to ed about the 24 hr bagel (beigel ?) bakery. the doughnuts there are 20 p i think. wtf ?!?!?

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 21 August 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Beigel Bake. They have the chewiest cheapest beigels with the thickest cream cheese. Superb, for needing a little snack on your way to Spitalfields Market or on your way to 93 Feet East.

My fav Brick Lane curry house=Shampagne. They have the best coconut chutney.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Any recent recommendations? I'm taking some visiting relatives out there... are they still interchangeable, or are there any standouts? I can't find Shampagne, mentioned just above, on any Google searches. The Monsoon still exists, so maybe we'll do that one. Thanks in advance...

all the joints on brick lane are pretty good from what i hear, but take a little walk farther down and TAYYAB will bring you the most unreal, unforgettable indian food you've ever had.

All my UK friends swear by it, and I never miss it when I'm there:
http://www.tayyabs.co.uk/

I was depressed after i finished my meal because i thought i'd never have indian food that good again

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 25 April 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

That does look good. I don't think I've ever had Pakistani Punjabi food. I think we've got to stick to Brick Lane proper, but I'm bookmarking that for a later visit!

Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Saturday, 25 April 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

(thanks)

Standard Balti House is the one i know best on Brick Lane itself

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Saturday, 25 April 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't "Standard Balti House" some dude's blog name?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 25 April 2009 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely the Standard.

Tayyabs is amazing, but if you're going go at 17.00 on a Monday night or something. The queues are ridiculous, utterly ridiculous.

As for Brick Lane, I like the Shampan or Aladdins.

If you're staying in the area for a few drinks get a beigel on your way home!

Local Garda, Saturday, 25 April 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

Brick Lane Brasserie is pretty good. Genereally speaking Brick Lane is overrated as fuck though.

I'd recommend booking at Tayyabs - it kicks the arse of every restaurant I've been to on Brick LAne. Very very popular indeed though.

Lahore somewhere in that Whitechapel wasteland is also nice...

Even if you book at Tayyabs you're still likely to be standing around for a half hour. Their service is fucking deplorable or just doesn't exist but the food is as good as Indian restaurants that cost 5 times as much.

Local Garda, Saturday, 25 April 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

the deli-like joint opposite the rough trade, with a lot of benches outside. what's it called?

also, this: http://www.allstarlanes.co.uk/bricklane/eat.aspx
gonna eat there tomorrow.

warmsherry, Saturday, 25 April 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

i want to try that place. is it good? is the bowling good?

Local Garda, Saturday, 25 April 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

omg tayyab's

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Saturday, 25 April 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know, i haven't tried it yet. WILL REPORT.

warmsherry, Saturday, 25 April 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

Pedant speaks - Tayyabs is Pakistani rather than Indian. I've always found the service fine considering they're overrun with customers at all times. Impressive in fact.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Saturday, 25 April 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

just go to the one that will offer you the best discount/free drinks deal.

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Saturday, 25 April 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

Shampan is Bagladeshi, a block or so south of Truman's, on the right as you go south towards Aldgate East tube. Shatkora curries (made with a citrus fruit) and tandoori quails are how you'd spot Bangladeshi cooking. I'm very, very partial to a cafe on Brick Lane called Sweet and Spicy (good for lunch) and there's another called Shalamar Halal that does fantastic seekh kebab rolls with a fresh naan for under £3.

For Pakistani Punjabi food the real mothership is Green Street by Upton Park football ground but Tayyab is awesome. Lahore is similar to Tayyab but the point of Lahore is to eat a mountain of tandoorized lamb chops in an environment that can be hosed down afterward.

if you do go to Tayyabs, you only need two words "dry meat" It's quite possibly my favourite restaurant dish ever. But much better to go for a late lunch mid-week rather than in the evening due to the insane crowds and them rushing you somewhat. Don't bother with the pakoras, very disappointing.
