Sadly it was a prank (and a good one) by the Yes Men: http://www2.macleans.ca/2012/07/16/yes-men-take-on-shell-in-ad-campaign-hoax/

God damn it this isn't real. http://www.zdnet.com/fake-shell-web-7000001030/ fuckin A I was pretty stoked there for a minute

xp yeah. some of these are still way funny but the thought that Shell was threatening to sue people was mega-LOL

tallarico dreams (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Shell isn't threatening to sue people, that is also a fakey.

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, got that. huge bummer

tallarico dreams (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

Dunno, I'm not as all *lol* as most re this...

Make a fakey website with pseudo ads, fakey sue yourself, fakey persecute the perps, ...

Meanwhile Shell lean back and ignore it for now, eventually issue a press statement and nothing else happens.

It's not a substitute for actual protest or information...

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

actually putting info out about shell's policies & practices, as seen on the fake site, is protest

Was fooled, is angry: http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/sci-tech/2012/07/epic-shell-pr-fail-no-real-villains-here-are-greenpeace

Well, I agree with pretty much all of that.

I would say, I doubt anybody has actually been threatened with legal action, as I doubt anyone but themselves has generated the fake/contentious 'adverts', so they are play-acting-out the 'legal repression' between themselves..

Poor journos.

Butthurt New Statesman bloke completely off the money. It's that old chestnut that gets trotted out about protest. Splashy, new, clever forms of protest (that occupy moral grey areas) but which actually attract attention, these are BAD. Old fashioned established forms of protest, which are totally sound, but so easily ignored that no one pays the slightest bit of attention to them any more, these are GOOD.

(aka hold one side to impossibly high moral standards, hold the other side to no moral standards at all.)
