I am kind of bad at this I've talked to people while travelling or in various places who have told me their life stories or w/e and have never asked for their or given my name

It never occurs to me to ask what someone's name is until it's much too late to ask that question

Yeah, I do this too. That, or we exchange names in an extremely perfunctory fashion and I immediately forget theirs.

instant exchange an instant forgetting is what i tend towards. what's that about? i don't usually forget things within two seconds of hearing them.

you're not actually listening because you don't care. or you're too focused on seeming personable and not actually listening. at least that's what i think is happening with me.

If I meet and have a conversation with someone i'd like to see again, or if the convo occurs someplace where we both go and thus are likely to meet again anyway, I'll usually say at the end something like "nice meeting you, oh by the way, i'm Lee", and usually the other person will offer up their name in response. May give out or try to get other contact info if it's someone I really want in my life (this comes naturally to me if it's someone I want to date, but I'm totally awkward in this situation if it's someone of the same gender I want as a friend).
Then it's up to me to remember the name and face, which I don't always manage.

i didn't know the name of the first friend i made in college for weeks after we met, even though we saw each other pretty frequently. i can't remember how this situation eventually resolved itself

actually now that i think about it the same thing happened to me with the first friend i made in junior high. neither of us knew the other's name for a week or two even though we had two classes together every day. how is that even possible?
