One Ring To Rile Them All

So. Yes. I played it. Yes. So. Halo. One word. One ring. One movie: Aliens. Halo: (what's the opposite of anxiety in this context? pride) The Pride of Influence. When you're storming some alien placement and a marine screeds across the screen: "we're all fucked, we're all fucked..." The signature image of Halo = the haunch of the Famous gun. And on that gun: a counter, ammo. And on Aliens' pulse rifle: the same counter. Gentle homage? No. This is Aliens: the game. Unsuccessful attempts have been made to recreate Aliens. From Jaguar (great) through Saturn (hmm), SNES (enjoyable), and PC (not played but meant to be great) and most have seemed to miss the point. That is: you don't need to be so damn literal. Aliens = feeling harrowed to yr very inner marrow; that ache-sense of anticipation/dread. So, it seems impossible to capture using the orig. sprites: use an analogy then. With tinctures of reference. For example, Marcello says Scary World Theory (in essence) = Entertainment. So, I'm saying Halo = Aliens. MY GOD! What a game. This game is so important. Important in the sense that "ohmygod the world didn't collapse after Freak Like Me went to #1" ie important as an event not for its probable, possible, implausible repercussiongs. But, as an event. As an event.

The PS2 and GC have a way to go before they have a game this good.

"we're all fucked, man" = what Hudson says in Aliens, obv. - but you knew that. Btw, I don't know what my point is either. Just talk about FPSs or computer games again, but preferably why Halo is great/rub.

David I've been saying this for weeks now: Halo is really, really tremendous, and I hope you spent months and months in four-player slayer action until you've opened up the tanks and the hovercrafts and every one of your friends knows exactly where the shotgun is on every level and can pick people off halfway across "Hang 'Em High" with two good pistol shots.

That said, I'm not entire certain about the Aliens thing -- I've never really played the single-player portions.

possibly not as good as Aliens vs Predator on the SNES though

Nabby, it is none more Aliens. But I came on here to say it isn't just Aliens. It is a distillation of all that has come before it into this new Megalith. New wine in old bottles. Angela Carter and the Carnivalesque! You should have been shouting it from the ilxtops 'cos I've not been hearing you. (Any slowdown on multiplayer?) Oh my God! The last time I felt this way about a game was Ocarina. And for a FPS it was Goldeneye (Half-Life overrated - I mean I can see how there were loads of great/revolutionary/fantastic ideas but *urgh*) - but Halo! Honestly, nitsuh this game owes so much to Aliens.

And the single player is immense. (Tho' I've not played multi-player yet).

I've only just acquired this, so no months and months of multi-player yet.

Battlefield 1942 and the new UT2003 demo outstrip the consoles again. And with Generals soon and my own mod of NWN more populated than any other in the UK, PC games win again
