what do you do on your birthday?

this question was prompted by a nightmare I had the other night in which, on my birthday, I was alone in an apartment very well dressed, getting drunk by myself and dancing to "Its My Party" on repeat. After a while, I thought this was pretty funny. It is like I was the victim of my own practical joke and sick sense of humor; like the mischevious side of myself held a suprise party for the gullible side of myself, and didn't invite anyone!

So... do you go out? stay home? friends and relatives? only one or the other? good food? movies? shows? solitude?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

hah - i have a midterm exam scheduled for my birthday. my plans have been decided for me this year.

back when i lived in a fab huge apartment, i used to throw massive, ridiculously indulgent parties with ridiculous themes. at one point, at one of my birthday parties - the theme was glam rock, if i remember - thirty pounds of confetti fell from the ceiling (the effect the 'art director' and i were going for was for it to feel like it was snowing in the building) (which pissed off everyone in my building for years afterwards) (i still find confetti on my shoes sometimes)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i've gotten to the age now when i see my birthday as "just another day". but i usually end up going out anyway. friends, not relatives. booze. booze is imperative.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i always take the day off work. usually i'll meet up with friends in a pub but i have also dragged them all to a goth club. one of my best birthdays ever was spent in new york where i ice-skated in central park in the morning, had a long lunch in aquavit, and then went to see "la traviata" in the met in the evening.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 09:09 (twenty-three years ago)

always take the day off work and ususally have a few drinks, next time demands a party though, it being the dreaded thirtieth :o(

chris (chris), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 09:10 (twenty-three years ago)

go to a nearly empty building (my birthday was on a sunday) sit down on a computer. Spend a couple of hours reading mark s' noise piece and then spend the rest of that time typing my first yr report.

go home. eat ice cream (from the tub, no plate required). go to sleep.

that's what i did on mine.

Bah! it is just another day, as di sez.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually go to the shops and buy stuff.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i usually take the day off work and do something i've been meaning to for a while, usually a museum or gallery. recent birthdays have been spent in london aquarium, the science museum, the bradbury building (see BladeRunner) followed by the revolving restaurant at the top of the westin bonaventure in LA (see, er, True Lies*). i think last year sucked but i can't remember why.

this year might be a trip to see the easter island head in the british museum but Mario Sunshine is released two days before so i might just be sat in front of the tv all day 8)

andy

* actually, this site: http://www.seeing-stars.com/Hotels/Bonaventure.shtml seems to say that the bonaventure was also in BladeRunner...

koogs, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I always go to work to get presents and guilt them (after all they can't expect me to actually do work on my birthday). Then in the evening its the pub - which is usually rammed with my friends who make me feel popular and special until there is either a fight or someone injures themselves.

I really rather enjoy my birthday.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I refuse to acknowledge any more birthdays until something happens in my life to make me want to celebrate them :-(

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're miserable and it's your birthday then don't try to use the birthday-ness to make you not miserable, it won't work.

My last birthday (29) - boozing on a cross-channel ferry before start of a k-brilliant holiday. Happy memories.

Birthday before last (28) - first ever karaoke then walking round the circle line the day after. Grebt fun!

Next birthday is THIRTY - it falls on a Sunday so a weekend of madness in some form is promised.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I throw a massive party of such size and proportion (this past year, I hired out the Water Rats) that I am so busy stressing about the party that I forget to remember it's even my birthday.

Oh, and I always listen to "Birthday" by Blur. Have done every year for the past ten years.

kate, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I listen to 'Birthday' by The Sugarcubes Kate.

Other than that, I am just not organised enough to throw a party for myself, so usually just drinks out somewhere. I use it as an excuse to eat ridiculously fattening, nice food I would normally sigh and avoid. (I know this attitude is unhealthy, but it's only low-level mentalism so don't berate me for it)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Non-event.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Me too, Graham. I also usually cry some. Ageing sucks when reduced to numbers (it's okay in other ways).

Ellie (Ellie), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

last birthday i went into work and did absolutely nothing and didn't even let anyone know it was my birthday; this was cos i had this silly idea that now i was past 21 birthdays mean nothing any more (also 2nd jan = a shit day to have a birthday). but this year i'm going to have a huge party again (despite the fact that my 20th/21st parties ended with me flooding my kitchen/my ex roommate smashing up 500 quids worth of lead glass window + then another friend's husband puking all over the middle of my living room).

(the whole over 21 = birthdays don't matter thing reminds me of my supervisor's story about he was really upset when he turned 21 cos of that line in the black angel's death song about "you sneer at those over 21").

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

(also i listen to birthday by the sugarcubes too)

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

friends and booze seem to be the constant

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Go to the pub with mates and let them buy me drinks.

Last one (19) I went did this and then went back to my house where there was some beer in the fridge, very low key, but still pretty cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

{{{{{Marcello}}}}}

When it is my, my mother's, or my sister's birthday the three of us go out to dinner. The birthday girl picks the restaurant and the other two pay (and my sister and I tend to take advantage of this and pick rather expensive restaurants).

Right now getting my friends together to do anything other than go to a concert is like herding cats, but in previous years we'd meet up at a bar and drink to celebrate people's birthdays.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The great thing about birthdays is that, for once, you can have 100% control over your social circle...you have an excuse to invite those people you rarely get to hang out with, and cute boys, and you can say things like, "I hate to ask this, but can you leave your annoying significant other/obnoxious friend at home tonight, because you know he/she and I really don't get along, and it is my birthday, after all."

And then everyone HAS to go, because otherwise they feel guilty, and then social decency dictates that you can't spend any money, which allows you to get really really drunk for free!

Is there anything better than this?

nory (nory), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The last few birthdays I made a fire and had friends over to drink champagne and eat princess cake. I predict some aspects of this ritual will change given that my new place has no fireplace.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I should contribute some fact instead of a dream and say that my birthdays get my hopes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY up! I am always frustrated. I had the right idea last year. I read the Sunday Times and chainsmoked sitting outside on a warm Atumn day, which was marvelous. But then I couldn't find anyone to eat dinner with, so I ended up at the local Indian place, spent too much money, and ended up sick afterwards!

My more popular friend was feeling lonely over the summer as he had nobody to spend his birthday with. I promised him that I would combine my party with his. I did this purely out of friendship. A few days later, however, I realized that since he is more popular, combining the two events is the only way to ensure that people will be there!

Has anyone ever had a surprise party? There is nothing in this world that I want more than that. But I have heard that they are overrated.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity do you also regret that prell is no longer sold in the green glass bottle?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

God, my birthday is so anti-social compared to all this. I just like to take the day of work and go buy CDs and comics, and spend the evening listening and reading. Oh dear.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

also

in addition to [regretting?] what else, jess?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i dreamt i wz at a conference about manga chocolate!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

and no, glass in the bathroom sounds really dangerous.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

This year I spent my birthday studying for an exam, so it kinda sucked. Last year I got drunk with my friends and bought "Amnesiac" while intoxicated (no, Julio, this isn't a perfect illustration of the dangers of drinking). It was an alright day. 18th b-day I got a suprise party which was genuinely suprising and featured some great terrible punch, but it seemed to end prematurely with me feeling woozy. ultimately so-so despite the wonderful gesture. I can't really remember any others very well. I guess I haven't had a fantastic birthday since childhood but I don't really mind.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant "also" as in "thank god i'm not the only one".

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Last year I got drunk with my friends and bought "Amnesiac" while intoxicated (no, Julio, this isn't a perfect illustration of the dangers of drinking).

b-but...um, never mind!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha jess, you might still be the only one. But you can have a slice of my next birthday cake.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

nobody knows my magical birthing day - I find socially sanctioned gifts awkward/unpleasant; + I'd rather be at a gig/club/with friends/whatever. That being said M&E found out my DOB this year & invited me around to dinner + drinks + music @ E's flat so oh well (but we do that all the time, shrug).
For my 21st I hope to be far, far away from parents/friends/etc. Preferably in an opium den in Laos or something.

(& I listen to the Headless Chickens' "Expecting To Fly", obv. . .)

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I have are the day off work and booze its just like any other good day.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to always have exams on/around my birthday. Last birthday I went to the sky tower for breakfast. Now I work so it will be like any other day except I am supposed to buy a cake for morning tea.

isadora, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I invite everyone I can think of that I don't hate to either a Vietnamese or a Thai restaurant and we take up a whole room and we eat and drink lots. I don't get many presents though. I liked birthdays in the olden days when everyone brought a lovely wrapped up pressie.

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Different things depending on how busy I am, but this year my birthday happens to be on the day where there is huge parade for the end of the Fringe Festival, so I think I will pretend the parade is for me.

rainy, Thursday, 19 September 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

my birthday is on new year's day so we usually go to my uncle's house and do these traditional bows before our elders and wish them a happy new year and then they give us money, except i don't think we did this last new year's day. can't remember what we did. next year i would like to go somewhere snowy. that's one thing i miss about columbus.

youn, Thursday, 19 September 2002 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I always listen to "Birthday" by Blur. Have done every year for the past ten years.

Wahey, not alone!

I usually just go to work and then celebrate in the evening somehow. Lately I've ended up having two celebrations, one with work friends and the other with my Close Personal Circle. It's a good balance, and much food is scarfed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 September 2002 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure this will make me out to be even more of a mentalist but:

I don't like to tell people about my birthday unless they have asked about it. increasingly this seems to mean that nothing at all happens on my birthday.

Josh (Josh), Thursday, 19 September 2002 04:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't had a birthday party since I was 4 - half because of the bother of organising things, half because of the fear of noone coming.

Sofa King Alternative, Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Doh, and now for the second part of the message...

The last couple of years I have found out that about 8 people in my extended social circle have birthdays within a day or two of mine. 3 of us have a joint birthday comprising, at the minimum, a visit to a pub and a club. Noone who knows at least two of us has any excuse for not coming

Muahuahua, ultimate power

Sofa King Alternative, Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to go for a nice meal with a small group of friends.

bizarrely, we always seem to go to the same place, and we never go there on any other occasion.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

five months pass...
my birthday is on monday, and i have no idea what to do since
a) it's a monday, and
b) it's midterms week

my place is too small to host a party, but i don't just want to do nothing. what should i do?

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 7 March 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara (Lara), Friday, 7 March 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard that.

mine falls, fortunately, on a saturday, this year [and month]. and I'm moving into my new flat today. and my twenty-first was spent in prague with my parents and my brother visiting me. so, I guess I can make up for it this time. with a RAGING KEGGER CRAZY BIRTHDAY PARTYZZZZZz. or a civilised gathering of friends. whatever.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 7 March 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Friday, 7 March 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't received the gilt invitation but if I do I'll arrive at ten, with a tiramisu, detest everyone new on sight and spray them with RID before smearing beetroot into your new curtains.

Cue BEST PARTY EVER!

Happy birthday josh kortbein! You are in my heart, even if you are a lurker now. :)

felicity (felicity), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't ever plan ahead to celebrate my birthday, and nobody's ever thrown me a proper "party" really, but what with my birthday falling on a very strategic end-of-summer fun-date (August 20th), there always seems to be something going on coinciding with my b-day; which is cool, cuz I don't really like all the "happy birthday DOOD" hoopla, but I do like celebrating.

All my recent b-days (starting with my 21st), I've ended up jamming really loudly on someone else's musical instruments before the night was over. I plan on making no exception this year; all drummers in the tri-state area, be on the lookout, I break cymbals.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the same thing as you two - mine's just after the 4th of July.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually do nothing. Not since I was 21 have I had an eventful b-day. This year my friends wedding is on my b-day. That should be fun. But I get pissed off every year because my best friend of 18 years forgets my birthday every year. Never fails. Mines Oct 18.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My best friend of 19 years always forgets mine, Chris - I feel your pain. Actually, most everyone usually forgets mine, cause they're still drunk and/or partying from the 4th.

Damn you mom!

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, my friends never remember it either. And I'm not one of those people to remind others, so I think there was a year where it just went by unnoticed.

buttch (Oops), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

God forbid I forget his though, he makes a stink about it. Sometimes I wonder why I have been friends with him so long. Although, its very likely that I won't see him much anymore as him and his wife are most likely moving to Jersey. Which makes me sad, really. He and I have been within a 20 mile radius of each other for 18 years. now im depressed.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Happy Birthday Josh, even though you probably won't even read this!

If I can figure out a practical way to ship beer to you, I will. Does anybody know of any online thingamajobbie where you can order beer for people?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I do the usual stuff for my birthday, but this past year finally had the idea to do something extra, kinda -- my birthday's in June, so in November, I said fuck it. We're celebrating 10,000 Days Of Tep, the day I turned 10,000 days old.

My group of friends is about half grad students, so in November, an excuse for a break is always great -- so I took everyone out to dinner and then went to Best Buy and bought everybody DVDs and CDs.

Won't get to do it again till 20KTep, when I'm nearly 55.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I ended up going to Jaleo in DC with my parents on my birthday last. that was it, no calls, no cards, no nada. the slate has been wiped clean i think.
i still love my dream.
