correction...
everyone was all THE DEATH OF MANNED SPACE EXPLORATION
Killing the Constellation program is still a pretty big blow on that front. SpaceX is doing some really great things quicker than anyone expected, but SpaceX is SpaceX and NASA is NASA. There's a pretty sizeable disparity present.

― Elvis Telecom, Monday, 6 August 2012 06:01 (twelve years ago)
Actually thats what I meant to ask, havent we landed a doohickey on mars before? Or is this the first one?
― Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 6 August 2012 06:02 (twelve years ago)

― StanM, Monday, 6 August 2012 06:03 (twelve years ago)
xp we sent up a couple rovers four or five years ago, and they gave us some images, but it was nothing on the scale of this.

One of the things I've learned from having a dad who worked for a NASA contractor since the early 70s is that the only thing NASA loves more than sending things into space is making matching shirts for people to wear for each mission.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 August 2012 06:36 (twelve years ago)
ha yes I had noticed the sartorial err elegance.
― Pureed Moods (Trayce), Monday, 6 August 2012 06:38 (twelve years ago)
Doesn't this seem like an inappropriate time to get all USA USA USA on things? I'd feel a lot more comfortable with EARTH EARTH EARTH—especially after Charlie Bolden said four other countries helped get this shit together and then declined to name any of them.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 August 2012 06:41 (twelve years ago)

Early in High School I got interested in theater and started taking classes in modern dance, ballet and acting. In college, I ended up finishing two bachelor's degrees, one in theater arts and the other in physics.
omg one of my best friends from my hometown was almost exactly like this!! but he failed out and managed a restaurant for a while. he's an engineer now, haha.

i keep reading this thread title as "what if the mars rover never found weed on mars" as if this thread exists in an alternate universe where ~everything changed~ once we had the mars weed
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 7 August 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago)
I sort of don't get why the internet is freaking out so much about this...? we've had robots on Mars for over a decade. is it just that this is the first touchdown to happen post-social media

Confirmation that water once flowed on Mars:

read this as "found weeds on mars," which made me picture mars as a ray bradbury type small town with weeds growing in everyone's front yard and old people sitting on every front porch, which is secretly how i sometimes still picture mars anyway
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 1 October 2013 01:03 (eleven years ago)
The answer to the thread question is obv that, if the mars rover took sufficient steps to ensure the weed did not fall into the hands of minors, nor enrich criminal gangs, then the justice department would monitor the situation carefully but take no immediate steps to prosecute.
