Your last pencil-case

When I became a man I put away my childish things. Including I note my pencil case. Now I have no need to be carrying around blunt coloured pencils, a protractor and a few leaking biros in an orange fluffy thing.

Actually my last one was a smart blue faux leather thing whose zip had brokn quite some time before. Yours?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have one you fogey. It is blue and funfur and ever so strokable. Previously I had one of those vinyl things with times tables and formulae on for SEVEN YEARS.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha mine was (and in fact still exists) as a blue shiny Hello Kitty Angel one that my lovely lovely friend A___ bought for me in the long lost and lamented Japanese gumph shop in Manchesters Not So Trendy Colliseum.

It has lots of biros in it, but god knows if any of them work.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

my last one was space-age (eg see-thru plastic, but it got v.dirty eventually)
my current one is fluffy and green and much coveted: it needs washing also rerally but i ph34r this is will be its d00m

haha i got a promo red biro once from a film screening (a v.rub thriller set in a vancouver hospital, malcolm mcdowell as crazed surgeon) shaped like a syringe => after a while it looked like much re-used junkie paraphernalia, which i kept in my see-thru pencilcase

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The protractxx0r NEVER fitted (back in high school days I had a different pencil case but god knows what it was actually cos I can't remember) and as for the BLUDDY COMPASS which always poked out and spiked you GRR ARRGH eh?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

jeepers attack of the massed ilXor funfur pencilcase mentalists (ps neither blue nor orange are actually colours, as gothfynder tim will tell you)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Ho ho those are Bad Taste pens as given away with Bizarre magazine!

Thriller set in a hospital?? Mark was the film Dave Q???

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

My last one was some silver thing from Muji. I was very proud of it as you couldn't get Muji stuff outside of London then and I thought it was very cool. It's sad really.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna, I have a silvery Muji cylinder too. I can get a total of 5 thin pens/pencils (or four and a lip brush) in it (I never use it). My (45 year old) supervisor didn't quite manage to conceal his snobby disgust yesterday when I told him there was a Muji in LEeds (AND in Manchester). So you are at least three steps ahead of him in realising that exclusivity born out of the timid marketing strategies of chain shops is not cool. Or only very slightly.

Ellie (Ellie), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I use the tin from a bottle of malibu rum. Hiccough!

kate, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It was a tin Weetabix one. David Crofts made holes in it with a pen, which annoyed me.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Bridget Riley op-art job. I lost it about 3 weeks ago. Where is it? I don't know.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I had the same one from age about 9 to 15 or so, it was a Liverpool pencil case, kind of leather, but all the writing had worn off except Liverpool 2 Man United 0, which I scrawled in massive black marker on it when I was 11 or 12, whatever season it was that Redknapp scored one and Bruce got an own goal.

I remember me and my friend Stephen agreeing at 16 or 17 that the fact we had stopped using pencil cases was symptomatic of our declining attitude to school.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i keep all my pens and bits in incredibly untidy bag. the last pencil case i *remember* having was one of those silly forever friends pencil tins, which i still have and which still has pencils and stuff in it. it was a present.

katie (katie), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Last one I had was this tin Super Mario one. Over the years I went mad and made thousands of holes in the top with a compass. By the time I left school Mario looked like he was riddled with bullets.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have and use one for professional purposes (to hold my red and blue pencils for copyediting)! However, it's not very interesting to see -- gray-brown see-through plastic.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

the last one i had was at college, it was an old fishing tackle box which would break and throw all your stuff all over the place at the worst possible time, like just about to get off the bus/tube.

fuzzy, Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
the last one lasted all through my secondary school years and is probably still at my parents' house (they never throw anything out). It was dark red and plastic and the zip was always on the point of breaking, but never did. The stitching around the zip was coming undone by the end. I remember once it had to be taken to be taken to the metalwork room and turps applied to remove an obscene message that had been written on it in indelible ink. The inside was very badly stained with purple and blue where various pens had lost their caps. It was always hard work to keep it free of pencil sharpenings. At the start of each new school year, I always made a point of sharpening all the pencils so I was good and ready, with a diligence I can only look back on and admire today.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

was this really only last month?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine are in a Cadbury's Fingers tin and have been for about seven years. I bought it as a present for my then girlfriend but I ate all the Fingers before I (ahem) had a chance to give it to her. Yum Cadbury's Fingers.

Richard Jones (scarne), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and, of course:

"brand new shoes and a pencilcase
making going back less hard to face"

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a red fleece pencil case with a teddy bear's head and arms attached to the side in a kind of CLING ON FOR DEAR LIFE way. He never had a body or legs. Santa got him for me from M&S a couple of years ago. Never having been carried in a school bag, he is still in good nick.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

My last pencil case was blue vinyl. In fact I still have it, and use it to store my son's coloured pencils. However, I must dispose of it before he learns to read, as it has 'bonus cock' scrawled across it in large black permanent marker. Not sure why, but surely that's not fit for kiddie consumption.

Forgot My Pencil, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

I still have a pencil case! I use it to keep all my drawing pens in, or they'd run all over my flat. Like they kind of do anyway, but moreso.

It is a metal tin with a picture of Ganesha on the front. I got it in an Indian import type shop in Vermont. It's good to have Ganesha on my pencil box, as he is the remover of obstacles, and artists always face lots of annoying obstacles.

That's great.

I have a worn, brown leather pencil case that I keep a bottle of ink and some blotting paper in for when I am using my fancy fountain pen.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

haha my post upthread.

ahh my old fishing tackle pencil case. i hated everyone in college and tippexed the lyrics to Damage Inc on it, and all the other students thought i were weird.

i use a shoe box now.

Ste, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

Mine was a leather tube/pouch type thing with an antenna and a button I broke off a radio glued on. It was called Radio Pennezak (Radio Pencil Case). Somehow, that was enough to be funny.

StanM, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

That's awesome. And here I was thinking I was cool with my calculator ruler.

Forgot My Pencil, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Hahah my pencil case in high school had the bauhaus logo and COCTEAU TWINS and stuff written all over it =D

Trayce, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

Someone wrote NWA on my pencil case and I didn't know what it meant :/

ledge, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

i have only just realised that it is the sedentary nature of (most) office work which nixes the need for a pencil case. Unlike schoolkids I am not always going from room to room and so favour the plastic stand up cylinders for pencils, pens ect ect, instead.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've had one since the cigar box in kindergarten . . .

though my bag does have a little pocket to slide them in.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

I had so many. I can't remember when it started, but at a certain point they tapped into that crazy early teen girl mind and wallet: fancy pencil-cases (and fancy pens, erasers,...). God, I used to RUN to the shop and spend all my money on those things. I had the bestest cases in the whole universe. :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

i still have my last one. it's a red, metal hello kitty box.

lauren, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

At work I have a DOCTOR WHO pencil tin free from Doctor Who Adventures magazine and at home I have a Dalek Stationery Set! Also from Doctor Who Adventures! Let's have three cheers for the awesome, Doctor Who Adventures mag!

Huzza!
Huzza!
Huzza!

(Sadly I don't actually use it but I am glad it's there)

Sarah, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

Lauren, you MUST post a pic of that. I have been trying my very best to convince my parents Ophelia is a HK fan, but I ph34r they realize it's actually me channeling my obsession through her. ;-)

stevienixed, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

Mine was a long black rubber zip-up one with times tables on one side and formulae and different types of triangles on the other. Except you couldn't really read the times tables properly because my friend had written 'GEOFF CAPES IS YOUR MUM' right across it in Tippex.

This was at about 18, tragically.
