Do you shave your... You know... Pubic hair

Inspired by this Guardian piece - http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/aug/07/pubic-hair-has-job-stop-shaving - and numerous totally smooth shaven cyclists, swimmers, divers, and other athletes at the Olympics, as well as the increasing public trend of removing pubic hair evident, well, pretty much everywhere from pornography to women's magazines to men's magazines to pharmacies to billboards to newspapers, etc etc etc, I've been wondering, in a non-pervy way of course, how hirsute ILXOR is, and what we think about body hair of all types.

So, vote, and discuss.

It's kind of ludicrous form of denial to think that some women don't also remove facial hair.

Fake Ve-EEEE-gan Cheese (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 08:23 (twelve years ago)

On the main subject of this poll, though, I am sick to death of the whole thing.

I'm sick of people telling women they should remove their body hair. I'm sick of people telling women they shouldn't remove their body hair. IT'S OUR FREAKING HAIR. ON OUR BODIES. IT IS OUR CHOICE WHAT THE HELL WE DO WITH IT. Either way.

Not that I'm pretending that social forces on this issue are in any way balanced on both sides. But seriously - insisting that women SHOULD NEVER DO THIS THING, EVER is just as bad as insisting that they must.

Fake Ve-EEEE-gan Cheese (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago)

I will say, however, that there was nothing quite like eating a pussy of the afternoon, then later, later at the dinner table with mom and dad, extracting a single red pubic hair from your between you teeth. That's an expeience that the kids of today can never have, with their shaving and waxing and dolphin-smooth netherworlds.

Sorry, that Guardian CIF just really wound me up. Especially as it was getting tweeted around by people who really should know better. Well-meaning gone to the dark side. Like... let's help women by... being just one more pressure telling women what they should or shouldn't do to their bodies.

Shaving's like breastfeeding - no matter what you choose, we're all wrong in someone's eyes. :/

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 10:54 (twelve years ago)

Men who trim their pubic hair: insecure or thoughtful?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 11:30 (twelve years ago)

I thought I'd included facial hair removal for women in an option; I certainly intended to. Apologies for any offence caused. I put the poll together quickly via iPad and should probably have spent longer on it.

I was thinking more about male athletes, as a side-effect of both my increased awareness of cycling culture and the likes of Tom Daley being everywhere. Plus the other night while changing for football a hairless teammate claimed smooth male chests were now "on trend".

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 11:50 (twelve years ago)

And I was probably only thinking of male athletes because it's so embedded as the norm for women to remove body hair in western cultures, and the taken-as-read nature of that is clearly problematic. Is it as much the norm in African, Asian, middle eastern etc etc cultures?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 11:54 (twelve years ago)

I personally hate shaving, but feel slightly as if I should be cleanly facially shaven for work, so compromise by just shaving on Mondays. In my last job I shaved about three times a week but it was a much more businesslike office.

I pluck my eyebrows in the middle for aesthetic reasons, and tweezer out occasional black hairs from my shoulders too. Pretty much no one apart from Emma and I see my shoulders for any length of time so there's not much logical sense to doing that beyond vanity and clinging on to youth.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 12:01 (twelve years ago)

So how's the best way for women to shave facial hair? I don't but would like to.

As an athlete, why would you shave your armpits but not your head? Unless armpits is just an aesthetic choice.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I don't get shaving armpits, if only for the lack of sweat absorption.

as for me: MAN/TRIM (waist down + shoulders). I wish I started doing this years ago but was too caught up in pointless normative ideas about what's 'acceptable' for non-freakish men - to which I have two three-letter words: FUK DAT! (of course it's not like these areas were being seen by anyone, so it hasn't really made a difference anyways).

I started waxing my little moustache recently and it was like a biore pore strip x1000 – it hit all the body terror/self-inflicted pain buttons that all the best grooming buttons hit. I can't imagine what it's like to get a Brazilian. Me and a friend were hanging out at a patio bar recently, watching a lightning storm, looking at the waxing parlor across the street. It has a clip art of a cat on the banner. We decided someday we should abuse some percocet and get out pubes ripped off together. That's really the only context I'd want to do it in, though – having a weird, borderline illegal ritual with a close gal pal. I think bush looks good.

Mordy, Thursday, 9 August 2012 03:21 (twelve years ago)

i also like to think it looks natural, as if i was just naturally hairless on my balls, too. it's not in-your-face bald. there's hair on the thighs and up above but you know. so it doesn't look weird when i go to the bath house with my friend or change at the gym. the fucked up thing is that i often end up growing out a beard because i hate the pain and effort of running a razor across it. i also think i look slightly feminine and sleepy without any facial hair but i hate the beard, too, so i'm stuck in this fucked up position of trying to meet people for the first time when i have 2-3 days growth on my face at just the right darkness.

Shaving the pubic hair is a confirmed Sunnah.

Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: Five are among the Fitra acts: "circumcision, shaving pubic hair, plucking out armpit hair, cutting one's nails and trimming one's mustache" . Muslim also reported from Anas (Radiya Allahu Anhu) that he said: A given period was limited to us as far as trimming the mustache, cutting one's nails, plucking out one's armpit hair and shaving one's pubic hair. We were told not to leave them for more than forty days . So, it is not advisable for the man or the woman to leave any of the above more than 40 days, as this is a Sunnah of cleanliness and a means to remove impurity.

And a few months ago, I picked up a basic trimmer/shaver thing (to keep my forearms clear for maximum tattoo visibility) and went a little trigger-happy, and ended up doing my legs with the second-closest setting. I am not sure what I was expecting but it certainly didn't involve winding up on my hands and knees, holding my cheeks apart while a small Brazillian woman got closer to my bits than any gynaecologist ever has. Did I mention that the room had mirrors on all the walls? The whole situation resembled something out of a medical fetish porno. *shudders* That said, the results were fantastic.
