Butter artist in-residence Jim Victor, dressed warmly and armed with a myriad of sculpting tools, takes to our specially designed cooler under the Mallary Rotunda, where he will sculpt an original piece of art from more than 600 pounds of butter donated by Agrimark/ Cabot Creamery. This year’s sculpture will depict a barefoot boy riding an ox through a field.

The one time I went, I saw Bjorn Again and ate an Italian sausage slathered with jalapenos and nacho cheese. I will never forget that night as long as I live.

2012 Cheese Grant

A limited number of grants are available. In an effort to relieve the cost of competition participation on the cheese maker the following grants have been made available. A limited number of $25 grants are available courtesy of donations made by cheese enthusiasts.

there was a NYT story on the Iowa fried fare today. When I read about the double-bacon double-corn dog, I could only think KEEP IAN OUT OF IOWA.

there are 14 classes of cheese at the big e gold metal cheese competition.

The New York State Fair has announced its newest food oddity that can only be found at a Fair. It's called the Big Kahuna Donut Dog.

The Big Kahuna Donut Dog is a hot dog wrapped in bacon inside of a maple glazed long john donut.

More food choices at this year's State Fair will be Tikki Turtle's fresh ground hamburger topped with deep fried mac and cheese, Deep Fried Specialties' deep fried lasagna, deep fried fluff and banana sandwiches, deep fried brownies, and deep fried peanut butter and deep fried jelly beans.

grew up going to (and later working at) the ny state fair, go back every year, can't wait for labor day weekend this year. the big kahuna donut dog!

the identity of the butter sculpture is a closely-guarded secret until the day the fair opens, but nothing can possibly be lamer than last year's - "a tribute to the food service cafeteria workers in schools through New York State."

YOKES - If a participant uses a certain style yoke for one class, the same style yoke should be used for all three
classes. This may include a neck yoke, head yoke or sliding yoke.

I'm looking for the press release, but we got one from the Arkansas State Fair a few years ago where they were bragging that it had been selected as one of the Top 50 state fairs in the country.

pplains, Thursday, 16 August 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago)

hahaha

When I went to the CA State Fair a few years ago, all the food was disappointing except for the roasted corn. New Mexico State Fair was 50x better.

i kinda hate the pig racing guy at the fair here. he used to do the fair on marthas vineyard too. he's a raging republican and all his pigs have democrat names. hillary rodHAM clinton.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 16:17 (twelve years ago)

Our pig racing guy is from Missouri, and everyone's always like, wtf, we can't have our own pig guy?

"Hey, I hear you guys like to call the Hogs!" YES WE DO, YOU YANKEE.

too bad cause "no matter what" and "let the music play" are two of my all-time songs, would've been a divine convergence (or a trainwreck)

my freind richard's dad took us to the ohio state fair in 1970, i remember riding the huge double ferris wheel and narrowly escaping a fight w/farm boys. maybe we looked at their prize pigs funny? we ate foot long hot dogs and rich's dad wanted to find a "yard long beer" to wash his down. he was a big man.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago)

the bud tent, afaik, still holds the record for most budweiser sold in a single location per year. and it's only open for the length of the state fair. my friend's boss's family apparently owns it, meaning they have the lease for that slice of real estate on the fairgrounds in perpetuity. i've been told that the proprietor only has that business, and just chills the rest of the year.

Iowa State Fair Beer Stand Owner Claims Obama Visit Cost Him $25,000. David Jackson, in a post for USA Today (8/15, 1.78M), reports that Mike Cunningham, "the owner of a famous beer stand at the Iowa State Fair says President Obama's visit last night cost him as much as $25,000. The Bud Tent, which has been serving fairgoers for 65 years, had to be shut down to the public during the presidential drop-in; patrons had to be screened and scanned before being allowed entry. ... 'I wouldn't have voted for (Obama) before,' Cunningham said. 'I won't again.'"

johnny crunch, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago)

yeah he's full of shit, but they really do clear a hell of a lot of money through that place

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago)

Does anyone else have FIGURE EIGHT RACING at their local county fair? I live for that shit.

cwkiii, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago)

beer + fat + racing = $

Sweet Yin Yang ☯ (Latham Green), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago)

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago)

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago)

fkin idiot as if that wouldn't happen if ANY president visited his fkin tent...

Lewis Apparition (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago)

There's a whole family that seriously DOMINATES the local figure eight racing circuit, it's hilarious; like three brothers and a cousin I think that just take turns winning every year.

cwkiii, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago)

Occasionally, a woman will enter the competition, and we will be constantly reminded of this by the emcee referring to her exclusively as "the lady driver" throughout the race.

cwkiii, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago)

if you don't want the president coming to your tent just tell the million people who you have to talk to beforehand that you don't want the president visiting your tent!

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago)

Even though I generally approve of Obama I would not want ot have a beer with him - it would feel awkward. I'd rather have coffee. Beer says "Lets be friends" but coffee says "Lets discuss the issues"

Well I've been like 20 times (grew up there, and we usually try to time our annual visit to my mom to coincide w/fair time. But the last 2 years there was the indie comix show which we wanted to xzibit at so we timed around that instead. So yeah, starved for Fair.)

I even worked for the carnies on the Midway for a month when I was 15! I was in one of the popcorn n soda wagon-thingies apprenticed to a humanimal named Stacey who looked like Pete Rose with a huge fro.

I'm still trying to get over the mention upthread of deep fried fucking JELLY BEANS urrrrgh.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Monday, 23 September 2013 10:32 (eleven years ago)

spam dippers were breaded deep-fried slabs of spam, basically, with sweet and sour sauce

i wasn't opposed to it in concept - it's totally possible to do something good with spam, and the normal rules of food obviously fly out the window at the state fair - but that was before i realized that breading and frying spam like that makes it all dried-out and grainy in this really gnarly way. maybe it could have been successful with a different batter? either way it was fucking gross

scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 19:46 (eleven years ago)

alternate possibility: it could have been treet or a similar low-budget spam analog
