1.7% BUTTERFAT MORE LIKE BIG BOTTOM BIRD FAT

turtwig greenturty (Matt P), Saturday, 18 August 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago)

I usually get 2% because I mostly use milk for cereal, but when drinking straight-up milk I prefer whole.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 August 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago)

1% is good for drinking, but I always make the mistake of using it in chowders and other recipes because it's the only thing I tend to have around. it's just too runny for cooking purposes a lot of the time. 2% and whole are too thick and heavy for drinking but maybe that's because I've been brainwashed into preferring the inferior product. otoh skim milk is basically water to me.

2% is the best compromise between richness/mouthfeel and not inviting a clogged artery, imo.

An English buddy of mine was visiting the States back in 2003 and had a sudden craving for a pint of milk when we were record shopping in NYC. We stopped in a little corner shop and he got a pint of half & half -- I said, "no, wait dude, that's like 17% milkfat" and he said "exactly" and drank it in one long draught, and I caught a bit of angina just from being within 10 feet of him.

whole milk. feel like all of the others have a gross aftertaste. although sometimes when i'm at my parents' house i will drink heavy whipping cream, so it could just be me that's gross

Used to drink 1% but learned to be fine with skimmed.

I've seen semi-skimmed in the US too, though infrequently, and assumed it was the same as 2% or something.

Lee626, Saturday, 18 August 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago)

2% for most things, but 1% is good too. can't handle skim. grew up with whole milk, but it's just too rich for me now. half & half is best for coffee though.

Ye ole medieval amygdalate, or as we now call it, almond milk. Generally more available for most cooks prior to refrigerated transport, and substantially better for you. Dairy is just rather nasty stuff from the the disease prention standpoint.

i hated drinking milk (2% or skim mostly) when i was a kid and got ok with it as an adult but drinking some of this glass bottle grass-fed cream-on-the-top shit was like, oh, THAT'S why people thought drinking milk was a good idea

j., Saturday, 18 August 2012 23:56 (twelve years ago)

We drink 2% at home for homemade lattes, cereal, cooking & whatnot -- but when I'm out and about a whole milk latte is the way to go.
So even though I drink more 2%, I'll vote for whole why because LATTES (cf rrrobyn)

I tried nonfat for a while and gaaaah it has such a horrible taste.

As a method of trying to reduce "animal proteins" (without actually changing my eating behaviors too much) a few years ago I went from whole milk down to 1% over the course of a few months. These days I'm back up to 2%... but, OTOH, now whole milk just tastes too fatty for me and is kinda gross.

Anyone ever have to drink powdered milk? Anyone here had raw/non-processed milk on a farm or anything? Straight off the udder is actually delicious but also kinda weird cause its hot so it starts to curdle the moment it comes out.

Goat milk is really good too... as is of course the more common goat cheese.

cow > goat > rice > malk > soy, IMO.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Sunday, 19 August 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago)

SUPER SKIM

cwkiii, Sunday, 19 August 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago)

Was going to vote whole milk as I have been extremely prejudiced against anything else. I don't drink milk, only use it in coffee when I am too cheap to use cream.

Then I recalled that as a beverage, 1% or skim with lots of ice is ace. However, I have since discovered coconut water!

I don't like milk at all and have stopped eating cereal, so I never buy it. But I'd go whole milk - the fat isn't bad for you per se, you're still getting all the sugar in skim/etc. and those always seemed even grosser than whole milk to me.

Coconut water tastes like what I imagine watery semen to taste like - salty, sweet/funky.
Do not get the point of almond milk, tbh. All of it I've had is watery, flavored varieties taste like water w/ cocoa powder/etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Sunday, 19 August 2012 23:05 (twelve years ago)

i always have chocolate almond milk with protein powder after gym and it's good imo. i think the non-thickness is a positive.

worked on a kibbutz and milked cows way back when. as a kid i never liked milk except as a vehicle for cereal, but this stuff was fed directly into a chill tank receptacle and was really cold. only time i ever enjoyed a glass of milk in my life

1% for general consumption, 2% for mixing with coffee

°™ (Pillbox), Monday, 20 August 2012 01:33 (twelve years ago)

Is there really that big of a difference between skim, 1% and 2%? I mostly have milk in coffee or smoothies, and just tend to buy whatever is available with the latest expiration date at the supermarket.

I think I grew up on skim though, so my palate may not be the most advanced. I remember being sickened at the real milk offered at friends' houses.

Anyone ever have to drink powdered milk?

My mom still tries to pimp this out when she's out of real milk. It tastes like milk water to me.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 20 August 2012 01:44 (twelve years ago)

The difference between skim and 2% is pretty noticeable to me.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 20 August 2012 01:51 (twelve years ago)

there is a slightly denser viscosity w/ 2% that I don't care for, whereas skim is too thin & watery, so 1 or 1/2% is a good (if subtle) compromise.

I was expecting 2% to win, but semi-skim is really the same thing, right? So essentially, 2% won?

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Friday, 24 August 2012 01:37 (twelve years ago)

they've recently, in certain uk supermarkets, started relabelling the semi-skimmed as 1% and the skimmed as 0.1%. that said wikipedia says that semi-skimmed is closer to 2%:

"In the UK, milk is marketed and labelled as follows:

Whole milk is about 4% fat
Semi skimmed milk is 1.7% fat
Skimmed milk is between 0.1-0.3% fat

In the USA, milk is marketed primarily by fat content and available in these varieties:

Whole Milk is 3.25% fat
2% Reduced-Fat Milk
1% Lowfat Milk (also called Light Milk)
0% Fat-Free Milk (also called Skim Milk or Nonfat Milk)"

so i think jesse is probably right.
