Anyone else see this? Same animation group that did Coraline. Ended up seeing it with my mom and aunt today almost by chance -- really fun, actually! Plus some honestly fierce and upsetting moments too. Wears the callbacks to both classic and more recent movie horror well while telling its own story -- also, I sure didn't expect Dizzee Rascal's "Fix Up Look Sharp" to turn up part way through.

Ok I wanted to see this bcz of Laika studios but the trailers made it seem like the movie itsefl would be grating. So I'm glad to hear you liked it.They seem to be mailing a lot of the minor stop motion puppets to webcomics people?

It sets a good tone from the start, pacing never seems off, pulls out a couple of rugs towards the ending nicely including a perfect throwaway joke that ends up explaining a lot.
Also a TON of well done blink-or-you'll-miss-it visual jokes. It was also just nice to see something that wasn't either Disney, Sony or Dreamworks.

this movie was a bit edgier than i expected! from seeing the promos i didn't realize they were going after a kinda 80's kid movie/"goonies" feel, but i liked it. also laika does 3D really well, if you're going to see any movie in 3D this would be a good one.
including a perfect throwaway joke that ends up explaining a lot.
that was great, the showing i was at was full of chatty kids who reacted loudly to everything, but after that joke it was all the parents who audibly went "ohhhhhhhhhh!"

Hahah about right. Saw it in 2D but 3D could definitely be worth it in a rewatch.

This was really fun! Took the nephews to see it - 4-year-old fell asleep halfway but 7-year-old was genuinely terrified at some points, kept grabbing my shoulder to make sure I was still sitting next to him. I think he liked it, though.
Loved the undercurrent of anger throughout, paid off really well in the surprisingly emotional climax.

also, I sure didn't expect Dizzee Rascal's "Fix Up Look Sharp" to turn up part way through.
Really enjoying Dizzee Rascal randomly turning up in unexpected places this summer, like at the Olympics.

"Undercurrent of anger" -- well said, that is the crux of this film. I think that's why it spoke to me so much when it came to reliving middle school.

saw this today and mostly liked it, although i wasn't sure what the takeaway was -- be nice to zombies? i thought the throwaway joke was obvious from the beginning, fwiw.

You are better attuned than I. (I just figured he was meant to be awkward, then again *I* think I'm awkward so projection.)
My sense of the takeaway was that bullies (of all sorts) suck but that one of the worst things they can do -- and one of the hardest things to get beyond, but you have to, somehow -- is ruin someone else's life by transforming them completely.

Meanwhile, nice article on the technical side:

I thought the movie largely sucked. Wasnt scary, wasn't funny, and it was only striking visually and thematically in the last 15 minutes. also, long stretches were outright boring.

It's no coroline, that's for sure. Perhaps the most major outing of a character I've ever seen in a kids movie, though. The audience actually gasped.

hasn't ANYONE seen the "call me maybe" video?

Under the surface, completely different from Coraline. (It's an above-average jokey chase-y movie but that's not my cup of tea)Every scene with the little witch in it is better than the rest though: the jokes stop and there's finally an emotionally engaging story. Plus the lightning looks great.

whatever haters, this was grebt. I might just like it cuz I read it as a mental-illness allegory though?

Just saw this, thought it was great fun, and much better than Caroline.

Really good. Missed it in the theater, was really pleased catching it later on itunes. Overshadowed by the equally good Frankenweenie.
