Hawaii just ahead of Maine

Romney's Kitchen Nightmares (WmC), Monday, 20 August 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

Those are the same two states I'm contemplating. Been to Maine 4x, including two whole summers, and loved it every time. Been to Hawaii once and would love to go back.

Don't get what Reston, VA is doing in the top 10. I used to work there - nice enough place, but housing is expensive, there's no public transport, you need to take a toll road to get anywhere, and there's just nothing distinctive about it. Same chain stores, restaurants, and clubs you'd find anywhere else in the US.

lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

The type of people who read Money don't want public transport, distinctive local culture, bars or clubs. They want low crime. And more low crime.

because the beach

"Pffft" --buddha (silby), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

Stroll around downtown, and you'll see cotton mills and feed stores transformed into hip boutiques and art galleries.

lulz

they seem to have confused McKinney with the Bishop Arts district in Dallas.

I'd pack up and move to Portland, Maine tomorrow if I didn't have to worry about rent/etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

Vermont over Maine. Maine's slipping a bit because Portland is becoming north Brooklyn, with all the NYC ex-pats realizing its relatively cheaper but still has $$ to spend on organic cheeses and ironic t-shirts.

Hawaii is beset by a certain kind of blowsy poverty outside the wealthy resort areas, but it has plentiful charms to offset that.

Aimless, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 04:07 (thirteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 27 August 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

Did not expect that.

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Monday, 27 August 2012 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

Surely, all the Montana votes were not from black people.

Aimless, Monday, 27 August 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

didn't even see this. eden prairie lol. overland park is p lol, too my grandparents used to live there a long time ago.

goole, Monday, 27 August 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)

would have voted maine or hawaii, sleeper vote to rhode island

goole, Monday, 27 August 2012 04:04 (thirteen years ago)

most of these aren't small cities, they're suburbs next to a larger urban core. what bullshit.

who the hell voted montana?

your native bacon (mh), Monday, 27 August 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

I did not see this poll initially but if I had, I would not have voted for Delaware because if it were such a great place to live, I would still live there.

carl agatha, Monday, 27 August 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

delaware is p mystifying, the rest of the top finishers are at least v beautiful

lag∞n, Monday, 27 August 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, there are some very attractive parts of Delaware but it doesn't compare to the rest of the top five.

carl agatha, Monday, 27 August 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

as I alluded above, I voted Delaware because as a metro-DC native, it's the home of the beaches of my childhood.

"Pffft" --buddha (silby), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
