Android for tweaking, IOS for the app store. There's just so much out there for the Apple store (I think I have 4 vegan cookbook apps) that once you're in the sandbox, you can't really leave.

Have switched to an android phone, the keyboard interface is a fuckin nightmare. Cursor goes missing, copies and pastes at random, stuff reappears after deletion, it's woeful. Is there any way to upgrade/change this?

Have switched to an android phone, the keyboard interface is a fuckin dream. Swipe-typing ftw. Also ftw: charging using the same cable as for my bike lights; upgradeable storage; can plug in headphones.

Not ftw: apparently even when my headphones are plugged in it still plays phone/message/nofication sounds through the external speaker, wtf? I had to download an app to disable it, am I missing something?

My Samsung S6 doesn't do that, they go through the headphones only.

heaven parker (anagram), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 13:48 (eight years ago)

Hm. I have a samsung a3; have found other people with different makes and models complaining about the same issue. Not actually sure if it's all sounds or just notifications, will have to investigate further later.

Just discovered you can turn off notifications for individual contacts which is great? Pointless? Certainly terrible if you do it by accident without realising and are waiting for an urgent text.

anyone know of an app that will automatically copy selected text?

reading ebooks in Portuguese I need to translate a lot of words, auto-copying would save me a ton of taps (I use Linguee which automatically translates copied text)

niels, Saturday, 18 November 2017 22:19 (eight years ago)

It does?

Modern Sounds in Undiscovered Country (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 18 November 2017 23:27 (eight years ago)

yeah, it's pretty cool! you have to enable the function in the app settings though

niels, Sunday, 19 November 2017 08:31 (eight years ago)

Interesting. Have only been using that app standalone

Modern Sounds in Undiscovered Country (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 19 November 2017 14:01 (eight years ago)

Okay. Just set it up and used on the Japanese thread, thanks!

Modern Sounds in Undiscovered Country (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 19 November 2017 14:09 (eight years ago)

You're welcome! So amazing that apps like these are free

niels, Sunday, 19 November 2017 17:43 (eight years ago)

I really dig the Linguee app and was a little surprised, perhaps pleasantly so, that I never had heard of it until I came across it almost by accident

Android users: go to settings, bbout phone, find build number and click on it 7 times. Go to settings again, developer options, set animation scale to 0.5x. Enjoy your new faster phone.

can't believe how shitty iOS is

running stock android on a cheap Google Pixel 2 but for work have to use an iPhone 12, which really, for the price tag, ought to be much better

but everything is so bad in iOS, the keyboard, app management, all the invisible keys and strokes needed, the godawful appleID and app store security settings

I'm sure the camera is good but can't believe iOS is so popular

I haven't used Android enough to have an opinion about it one way or the other, but yeah never been happy with the iOS keyboard.

On the other hand -- for probably years I've wondered why so many selfies are backwards. Some are obviously in mirrors, so makes sense, but most I just couldn't figure out. Thought maybe people were taking screenshots instead of hitting the shutter button, but seemed unlikely. Never cared enough to look into it though until last week after seeing a pic a friend had just posted with him and a few of his buddies right after a race, all with their backwards race numbers and backwards signs in the background and everyone's hair parted on the wrong side. Googling to find out what was going on I was amazed to discover that that's actually Android's default for selfies, and even more amazed that most of the Google results were links to complaints from people who'd just switched to iOS from Android and were upset that their selfies weren't backwards anymore.

early rejecter, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 19:22 (three years ago)

xp other way around for me. I think iOS has slowly gotten worse over the years, but I have to use Android (one of the newer Galaxy phones) for work and I'd still take my iPhone over that shit any day of the week.

I'm sure a huge part of it is just preferring what you're used to. Like you complain about the iOS keyboard, but man, I type like a fucking disaster on that Samsung. Facial recognition also seems noticeably inferior. As does the camera. The battery doesn't last nearly as long (may need some tinkering). Also I occasionally receive text messages days after they're sent for some reason? Could be carrier related, but that's like... not a small a problem.

circa1916, Wednesday, 4 May 2022 20:01 (three years ago)

Hehe, what you're used to definitely plays a part.

I feel like Samsung probably have a lot of bloatware in their Android OS, can imagine it's frustrating.

Have you tried using Gboard instead of whatever default keyboard app Samsung is using? Might be nicer. You can also install another default launcher (like Nova Launcher) if the stock one isn't good.

I find the selfie reversal to be app-dependent, kinda weird
