Haven't seen a lot of these. Might go "Election," although I wonder if I saw it again, it'd decline in my estimation, much as "Wag The Dog," "Bulworth," and "All the President's Men" did.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:13 (twelve years ago)

think election is the one that maybe gets american politics most and manchurian candidate is the best overall but parallax view is the one i most want to watch again right now looking at that list so i voted that.

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago)

A very short list of those among the missing:

The Great McGinty
JFK
Bob Roberts
Reds
The War Room
The American President
Being There
The Fog of War
The Front
Good Night, and Good Luck.
The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover
Dave
13 Days
The Times of Harvey Milk
anything and everything by Peter Watkins

Eric H., Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:20 (twelve years ago)

o totally would've voted great mcginty

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:25 (twelve years ago)

Don't harangue me here, Eric: All the President's Men, then The Candidate, then Election or The Manchurian Candidate or The Best Man. Haven't seen Z, regrettably. Concur with JFK, The War Room, The Times of Harvey Milk, and (with some reservations) The Fog of War. Would add Nixon, Advise and Consent, and I'm sure I've forgotten others. (Omitting stuff like Nashville, where politics is central but bubbling under.)

clemenza, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:27 (twelve years ago)

i went great dictator over all the president's men

Mordy, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:28 (twelve years ago)

bullworth is shit

johnny crunch, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:31 (twelve years ago)

Voted Bulworth.

Sunn? Sunn? It's your cousin, Marvin O))) (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago)

Won't harangue you here because here's one genre where it at least makes sense to be stuck in the '60s and '70s.

Can't believe I forgot Advise and Consent.

Eric H., Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:39 (twelve years ago)

Parallax View gets my vote.

Eric H., Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:40 (twelve years ago)

i enjoy all the president's men but beyond the perps in question it doesn't strike me as much more political than yr average law & order tbh

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 02:46 (twelve years ago)

It's also sloooooow.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago)

I'd also add Primary Colors--to the Time list even. It's as flashy as Clinton himself, and therefore will annoy some people, but it's quite effective.

clemenza, Thursday, 6 September 2012 03:44 (twelve years ago)

JFK isn't really a political film, but it still deserves to knock out Frost bloody Nixon.

Simon H., Thursday, 6 September 2012 03:51 (twelve years ago)

primary colors movie sucked imo, movie should've held closer to the tone of the book, much broader and more cynical - like wag the dog or my fave nixon movie dick - instead it was a more ribald american president. that does remind me though has anyone here seen this? i actually remember it coming up in a trivial pursuit game me and casino played a LONG time ago where we were all 'wtf is that?' so was kinda 'a ha!' when i saw that carson thing.

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 03:57 (twelve years ago)

manchurian candidate. "i had thought to spend the afternoon at macy's. madame yen has given me the most aPALLing list."

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:06 (twelve years ago)

corny joke on a couple levels but delivery gets me

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:06 (twelve years ago)

hahahhaha wow balls, i don't even remember that but i totally believe you and that made my evening really

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:16 (twelve years ago)

i recall 3 questions from that trivial pursuit game: something about that miniseries none of us had even heard of, what time you're supposed to buy shoes, and what was jesus's zodiac sign (under 'science and nature')

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:19 (twelve years ago)

hahahahah god no wonder emilys became fedup with the entire thing

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:22 (twelve years ago)

fed up, even

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:22 (twelve years ago)

i DO remember the jesus zodiac thing though!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:23 (twelve years ago)

that's the only one i know the answer to ('capricorn'), my outrage at that being in science and nature has faded to bemusement though.

balls, Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:27 (twelve years ago)

Great Dictator for me

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 6 September 2012 04:31 (twelve years ago)

I mean, I guess constellations are a feature of the natural world...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 05:02 (twelve years ago)

Glad you don't remember starting date of WWII, balls.

emilys., Thursday, 6 September 2012 05:19 (twelve years ago)

What is the right time to buy shoes?

Alba, Thursday, 6 September 2012 07:59 (twelve years ago)

afternoon/evening when your feet have stretched from a day's use iirc

Une ville musulmane dans la Chine du Nord sous les Mongols (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 6 September 2012 08:11 (twelve years ago)

Also missing:
anything and everything by Ken Loach
In the Loop
Dr Strangelove
Battle of Algiers
lots of J-L Godard
etc etc

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 6 September 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago)

"Political film" is almost as difficult to pin down as horror or comedy. It's like that Hal Phillip Walker line in Nashville: "All of us are deeply involved with politics whether we know it or not, and whether we like it or not." (Quite fatuous in the film, of course.) I assume the Time list is based on films with actual politicians.

clemenza, Thursday, 6 September 2012 11:46 (twelve years ago)

And Election

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 6 September 2012 11:50 (twelve years ago)

and Downfall

Une ville musulmane dans la Chine du Nord sous les Mongols (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 6 September 2012 11:54 (twelve years ago)

Absence of Strangelove is straight up baffling, normally it's a shoo-in for lists like this.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 September 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago)

three weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 29 September 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago)

Found a copy of Z in a local library, so I'll finally get around to seeing that. Don't ever remember a rep screening around here. Altman's Tanner '88 should have been on Time's list--I'd put that right alongside The Candidate as my second favourite.

clemenza, Saturday, 29 September 2012 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, def voting Parallax View.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:19 (twelve years ago)

Really surprised that Battle of Algiers isn't on there given that Gavras' film is.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:23 (twelve years ago)

I need to watch Downfall

alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:30 (twelve years ago)

Voted for underdog The Candidate, I think its Redford at maybe his most endearing and I thought it was really good when we watched it in high school civics class.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago)

I don't understand the love for Bulworth I thought it was obnoxious, dumb, unrealistic and I well, I just hate Warren Beatty anyway.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago)

kind of dislike most of these films, except 'manchurian' and 'mr smith' (which got my vote).

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago)

can't believe bulworth was 1998. seems like 92 or something.

how's life, Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:14 (twelve years ago)

Bulworth was a film where I cringed the whole way through, and knowing that I was supposed to be cringing didn't make the experience any more rewarding.

clemenza, Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago)

Election over The Manchurian Candidate.

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:49 (twelve years ago)

Ditto, more or less.

Death Grits 2 (WmC), Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 30 September 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago)
